This is a competition I personally play in and it is a very good comp.

The teams:

QUT Trouts
Griffith Dragons (Nathan/Mt Gravatt Campuses)
Griffith Gold Coast Panthers
Griffith Steamrollers (Logan)
USQ Ironbarks (Toowoomba)
UQ Gatton

http://www.urlq.com.au/Home.aspx

I play for the Dragons and trust me, our week one result in no way reflected our actual team! We are top three material we believe.

THE QUT Trouts have sounded an early warning to their Universities Rugby League Queensland rivals with a hammering of the Griffith Dragons.

The URLQ competition kicked off with a massive triple header at Griffith Nathan Campus on Anzac Day, and it took the Trouts just 40 minutes to put their stamp on proceedings.

Playing in the first game of the day, the Trouts piled on 38 unanswered points in the opening half to bring the Dragons back to earth with a thud.

The Dragons did answer soon after halftime with brothers Elisha and Elijah Kiddie scoring tries, but the Trouts were in an ominous mood.

By fulltime Presley Ekoikin had scored three tries and the Trouts had amassed a 76-10 thrashing.

The USQ Gatton Bulls made their trip to the big smoke worth it when they ran over the Griffith Logan Steamrollers 44-24 in the second game of the day.

It was the Steamrollers’ debut in the URLQ competition and they came ready to play with plenty of size.

But the Bulls outstripped them, with Joshua Heck, Chris Cooper and Mar Law all landing try-scoring doubles, while Howard Willey ran in three for the Steamrollers.

In the final match, Griffith Gold Coast Panthers showed their hand when they defeated USQ Toowoomba Ironbarks 42-18.

In the Ironbarks’ return to the URLQ competition – team numbers have grown from four to six this season – the Panthers were just too good.

They ran in seven tries with Kurt Resh knocking over every conversion.

URLQ RESULTS (matches played April 25)
QUT TROUTS 76 (Presley Ekoikan 3, Esat Zaheer, Tyler Hall, Charlie Griffith, Kyle Panebianco, Joshua Meninga, Steve Young, Hayden Murdoch, Kurt Dubbin, Jordan Thom, Ben Ioane tries; Tyler Hall 10, Jordan Thom 2 goals) defeated GRIFFITH DRAGONS 10 – (Elisha Kiddie, Elijah Kiddie tries;, Rhys Brady goal) at Griffith Nathan campus.

GATTON BULLS 44 (Joshua Heck 2, Chris Cooper 2, Mark Law 2, Kody Wilkinson, Mark Owens tries; Joshua Heck 3 goals, Kody Wilkinson 2 goals) defeated GRIFFITH LOGAN STEAMROLLERS 24 (Howard Willey 3, Shaun Wilkinson, Turua Masters tries; Howard Willey 3, Joseph Heri 2 goals) at Griffith Nathan Campus.

THE QUT Trouts sit alone at the top of the Universities Rugby league Queensland points table after three rounds, registering a hard fought 22-4 victory over a gallant USQ Ironbarks outfit.

The Trouts made it three straight victories to start their title defence, with winger Charlie Griffiths bagging a double and versatile utility Jack Webb inspiring the home side. The Ironbarks Mick O’Keefe and Scott Watson were again strong for the visitors.

The match ended on a sour note however, with crafty Trouts hooker and leading try scorer, Presley Kos Enokin, leaving the field with a serious elbow injury.

In the second match of the double header, Griffith Logan cracked their first win in their debut season, steamrolling a Gold Coast Panthers outfit, 24-22.

Howard Willey had another strong game for Logan, scoring his second hat-trick of the season, with the competition new boy’s combinations improving remarkably after three rounds.

It was a tough night for the visiting under-strength Panthers, but Josh Land and Jack Smith worked tirelessly in what was a gallant team effort.

The final game between the UQ Gatton Bulls and the Griffith Dragons was postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date.

been floating between front rower, second rower and even had a stint out at centres during a match! It has been a challenging thing to get back into it all after over a year off, and not to mention our mid semesters etc is about to throw a long break up, but playing is good.

We resume the second half of the season on the 1st of August after we play our final match on the 30th of May.

PANTHERS ROAR IN URLQ CLASH

* Meanwhile, the Griffith Gold Coast Panthers have roared back to life courtesy of a 38-12 victory over the UQ Gatton Bulls in the opening Round 4 match of the Universities Rugby League Queensland competition.

The visiting Bulls opened the scoring in just the third minute through a great individual effort from fullback Andy Carlyle, but Gold Coast quickly clicked into gear to take a 20-6 lead into the break.

As the second half wore on, the home side was spurred on by the damaging charges of forwards Jack Murphy and Josh Land, with agile utility Mitchell Pedler capitalizing to cross for a hat-trick of tries, while debutant winger Matt Beaton nailed 5 conversions in a comprehensive Gold Coast victory.

In Brisbane, the QUT Trouts continued their undefeated run courtesy of a 60-0 demolition of the Griffith Logan Steamrollers.

It was a demoralising night for the understrength Logan boys who held the Trouts to a 12-0 half-time advantage, but the defending premiers sprung to life in the second stanza, crossing for 8 converted tries in yet another dominant victory.

Trouts lock Trent Richardson crossed for four tries in a dream debut, while crafty QUT hooker Jack Webb was again an inspiration out of dummy half.

And the Griffith Dragons ground out their first victory of the season, holding off a spirited USQ Ironbarks 28-26 in the final match in Brisbane.

In a tight tussle, the Dragons Rhys Brady proved to be the difference with a personal haul of 12 points, while USQ’s Mick O’Keefe tried hard for the visitors.

Here come the Dragons.

The QUT Trouts remain the only undefeated team after the opening five rounds of the Universities Rugby League Queensland competition, thanks to a nail-biting 14-10 victory over the Gold Coast Griffith Panthers.

In what is becoming an annual grudge match against the grand final combatants of the past two seasons, it looked as if the Panthers had the visitors measure, but a 67th minute try to Trouts winger Zaheer Esat saw the QUT boys come from behind to steal the points.

Livewire five-eighth Joshua Meninga took out the QUT man of the match honours just ahead of forward Brandon Cox, while the Panthers left side pairing of Nathan Land and Matt Beaton were a constant menace all night for the Panthers.

The Griffith Dragons recorded back-to-back victories for the first time this season courtesy of their 48-28 victory over the ever improving competition new boys, the Griffith Logan Steamrollers.

In a game dominated by exciting attacking raids, it was the Dragons backline that paved the way for the victory, with Mishek Rusere, Rhys Brady and Nigel Craig enjoying a good night out, while Joseph Heri and Luke O’Donnell were solid for Logan.

And the USQ Ironbarks have moved into outright third position thanks to their 64-16 rout of the UQ Gatton Bulls.

Jay Melrose had a field day for the Ironbarks scoring five tries in a powerful display, while Michael O'Keefe continued his great season by adding another 18 points to his season tally.

Gatton will now have a shot at redemption when they host the Griffith Dragons next Wednesday night, with all teams then enjoying the mid-semester break.

After a hard-fought first 5 rounds, the URLQ competition is set to continue on Wednesday 1st August.

When I played for Griffith Dragons (mid 90's) there were 2 teams at UQ St Lucia, teams at ACU, Toowoomba, Gatton, 2 at QUT, 2 at Griffith.

It was a great comp, enjoyed it immensely.

I cant believe UQ St Lucia cant field a team...
