So why do we know them as Valleys, and not fortitude valley? Is it just a short/nickname that stuck or do they represent a valley area of Brisbane?

The part of Brisbane that has always been referred to as "The Valley" is actually the suburb named "Fortitude Valley" named after the ship Fortitude which brought early settlers to the area.

The Rugby League club has always been the same - officially the Fortitude Valley Rugby League Club but just called Valleys by everyone.

Back in the 60's and 70's many commentators like Billy J or George Doniger would say Fortitude Valley or just Valley.
