Vodafone Warriors suffer ISP setback
It was the dance of the desperate as the Warriors sought to salvage what had been a promising season, at least up until a month ago. Coming off the bye, the home side was seeking its first win in five games and some valuable competition points to help them into the finals series.

They were hosting a Newcastle side in good spirits, whose otherwise miserable 2018 had been buoyed by an upset win over second-placed Mounties in Round 21. However, it was only the fourth victory for the Knights, who sit firmly rooted to the bottom of the table.

The game kicked in fine conditions at Mt Smart Stadium, however it quickly settled down into an arm wrestle in the middle of the park. Both sides were conservative around the ruck and content to try and probe a weakness in the opposition defence.

The Warriors looked the better side in the opening stages, however they were frustrated by good scramble defence from the Knights.

Eventually they were the ones who cracked first though, with Tom Hughes crossing to open the scoring. Brock Lamb converted and the Knights controlled the rest of the half with accurate kicking and simple one-out running.

The sides went to the sheds with the score 6-0, and it was obvious that the Knights could sniff a second upset in a row.

They doubled their lead after 53 minutes, when Nick Meaney scored near the uprights. Lamb was again on target, and the Warriors were facing an uphill battle to avoid another home defeat.

It didn't get any easier shortly after when Hughes got his double, even though the try was somewhat contentious in the build-up. Potential handling errors aside, the score was 18-0 it was going to take a miracle for the Warriors to storm home.

The home side did click into gear, however, albeit through a fortuitous piece of play of their own. A kick over the top took a friendly bounce for winger Junior Pauga, and he passed inside for Anthony Gelling to finally open the account with 10 minutes to go.

It would prove to be too little, too late. The Knights didn't let the mini-comeback phase them and ground out the remaining time, with Lamb taking a penalty in the dying stages to push the score out to 20-4.

Newcastle coach Rory Kostjasyn will be wondering where the impressive Knights side has been all year. One week after beating Mounties, they can now add another scalp to the tally and take some much-needed confidence into the final rounds of the season.

Meanwhile, the Warriors face the very real possibility of missing the finals altogether. Thoroughly outplayed, they let the Knights dictate terms for the majority of the match.

The Wariors face a tough trip across to Henson Park next weekend to play Newtown, and they will be under no illusions about the significance of that one. Newcastle head to Penrith, who will be on full alert at the Knights' sudden giant-killer status.

Teams out for ISP and Jersey Flegg
The Vodafone Warriors will need to get past third-placed Newtown to snap a run of losses in Saturday’s 23rd-round Intrust Super Premiership match at Henson Park in Sydney.

Despite going down to bottom-placed Newcastle last week, the Vodafone Warriors have retained seventh place in a packed points table.

Entering the second to last round of the regular season, they’re on 22 points with the Wyong Roos, who are eighth on points for and against.

Danger lurks just below, though, with the Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles ninth on 21 and the North Sydney Bears and Wentworthville both on 20.

The Vodafone Warriors are away to the Bears in the final round so victory in at least one of the last two matches will be critical to ensure they play finals football.

The Vodafone Junior Warriors have another tough assignment. After a heavy loss to competition leader Newcastle last week they’re away this week to second-placed Cronulla.

Who are the standouts in the reserve grade?? I’ve heard good things about perham, Harris-tavita and Ale. Plus I believe they are all still teenagers. Was a real shame that the warriors lost that young centre to union who’s apparently killing it in the 15 man code.

Jets turn on the afterburners in hot display

.The Newtown Jets put on an attacking masterclass in a comprehensive 52-16 triumph over the New Zealand Warriors at Henson Park.

It may have been a little cool at the ground, but the home side kept the crowd warm with a dominant 10 tries to three demolition.

The visitors made a great start with James Bell opening the scoring in just the third minute. The try was converted from in front for an early 6-0 lead to the Warriors.

The Jets opened their account in the 10th minute when Briton Nikora found space down the right edge and passed inside to Jack Williams to score out wide. Kyle Flanagan made no mistake with the conversion attempt to tie it up at 6-all.

A brilliant bust by Jets centre Reubenn Rennie split the Warriors open in the 15th minute and Flanagan showed great initiative to back up and score beside the posts. He converted his own try to make it 12-6.

The Jets made it three tries for the half when an ungainly grubber was kicked ahead for fullback William Kennedy to scoop up and score to the delight of the home crowd. Flanagan's effort was waved away and the Jets had raced out to a commanding 16-6 lead after just 20 minutes.

Sione Katoa continued the free-scoring half with a try in the 22nd minute after the Jets had received a full set only 20 metres out; they wasted little time in spreading the ball wide for Katoa to capitalise. Flanagan missed from out wide and the Jets led 20-6 mid-way through the half.

Back-to-back penalties put the Warriors right on the attack for the first time since they opened the scoring way back in the third minute of the match and they came away with points again thanks to winger Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad who dived over in the corner in the 27th minute.

The conversion fell short and the Jets held onto a 20-10 lead approaching the half-hour mark.

The try energised the Warriors and from the ensuing set they marched downfield and a neat cross-field kick by halfback Mason Lino forced a repeat set.

The Jets held firm and received a much-needed penalty as they worked their way out from their own end.

A big bust through the middle had the crowd on their feet but the play broke down and the Warriors took possession with just over 5 minutes left of an absorbing half.

Desperate goal-line defence denied the Warriors and a double movement infringement saw the home side march downfield as the half wound down.

Ill discipline from the Warriors gave the home side a great attacking opportunity late in the half and Jets five eighth Jack Williams ducked and weaved his way through some flimsy defence to grab his second for the match. Flanagan made no mistake to give his side a comfortable 26-10 lead at the break.

Both sides took their time getting into the flow of the game to start the second half and it was the Jets who would score first in the 51st minute through five eighth Jack Williams, the try converted for a commanding 32-10 scoreline in favour of the home side.

A fortuitous play by Jets backrower Briton Nikora saw his grubber regathered and with a fresh set the Jets took advantage of a retreating defence to send Anthony Moraitis over, converted by Flanagan to make it 38-10 with 20 minutes to play.

The temperature was dropping but the Jets were heating up and they added another try to Jaimin Joliffe who crashed over from close range. The successful conversion made it 44-10 with 16 minutes left.

The Jets added try number nine in the 69th minute through Bessie Aufaga Toomaga who dived over in the left corner. Flanagan couldn't add the extras and the Jets held a 48-10 lead with 10 minutes remaining.

Despite leading by 38 points, the Jets continued to work hard in defence repelling Blake Ayshford and bundling him into touch in the 73rd minute.

The visitors grabbed a late consolation try through winger Nicoll-Klokstad in the 75th minute, converted by Harris-Tavita to make it 48-16.

The Jets brought up the half century in style with an 80-metre try to Katoa which brought the crowd to life and continued the winger's impressive match. Afuga Toomaga couldn't add the extras but the home side enjoyed a comfortable 52-16 victory.

Been a strange year. Haven't been nearly as many televised games as I hope for. Feels like less than last year. So haven't been able to get a gauge on things. Be interesting to see if this coach keeps his role for next year.

ISP and Jersey Flegg line-ups for round 24

The Vodafone Warriors are in sudden-death territory going into their final Intrust Super Premiership regular-season match against North Sydney at North Sydney Oval on Saturday (3.00pm kick-off local time; 5.00pm NZT).

Despite losing their last six matches, they’re still seventh on the ladder on 22 points thanks to a run of helpful results from the teams nearest them on the ladder.

But, after failing to register success since beating the Mounties on June 30, they must now rediscover winning touch to make the finals starting the following weekend.

The last two spots in the finals have come down to a battle between five teams – the Vodafone Warriors, Wyong and Wentworthville on 22 points, Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles on 21 and North Sydney on 20.

Wyong will automatically climb to 24 with two points from a bye but has a slightly inferior points for and against record of minus 78 compared to minus 62 for the Vodafone Warriors.

The Sea Eagles are at home to competition leader Penrith and Wentworthville hosts Canterbury-Bankstown.

There are various permutations but the simple requirement for the Vodafone Warriors is to win and they’ll be in.

Harris-Tavita's heroics seal finals berth
Five-eighth Chanel Harris-Tavita was the hero for the New Zealand side, scoring the first and last tries of the match and potting the winning conversion at the death.

For the Bears, who had an outside chance of jagging a play-offs place coming into the Round 24 match at North Sydney Oval, the season is over. They will be left to rue what might have been after showing extreme promise at various points of the year.

The Warriors sprung out of the blocks, kicking a penalty goal in the fourth minute through Harris-Tavita to take a 2-0 lead.

North Sydney seemingly hit back when hooker Billy Brittain burrowed over the line. However, the No.9 was ruled to have committed a double-movement.

The grinding nature of the fixture continued as the half wore on, with the slippery turf not conducive to expansive football.

After 20 minutes, New Zealand broke the try-scoring drought in unlikely circumstances.

Warriors prop Ligi Sao charged down an attacking Bears kick and skilfully regathered the deflection. He then offloaded to a flying Harris-Tavita, who sprinted the best part of 70 metres to score.

Harris-Tavita knocked over the conversion to push the visitors past a converted try lead.

The Warriors then coughed up the ball to grant North Sydney possession deep on the attack. It took some brave scramble defence to keep the Bears at bay.

But ill-discipline kept making life hard for the visitors. New Zealand found themselves down to 12 men after a string of conceded penalties, with centre Anthony Gelling sent to the sin bin.

Eventually the pressure took its toll on the Warriors, as Bears halfback Kurtis Preece – deputising for playmaker Dean Hawkins – stepped his way under the crossbar.

Fullback Jesse Arthars added the extras.

Suddenly the Warriors were in all sorts. They kicked the ball out on the full off the restart to gift the Bears another penalty.

And North Sydney made the most of it, touching down for a second time when Arthars crossed down the short-side after a lovely Connor Tracey pass.

Arthars couldn't kick the goal from the sideline; the score staying at 10-8 in favour of North Sydney.

Gelling returned from the sin bin in the shadows of half-time – but the match was now on a knife's edge following the damage the Bears inflicted in his absence.

The tension was palpable in the second stanza as both teams fought valiantly for their seasons.

The Bears resembled the walking wounded with a number of players going down injured in quick succession. However, it didn't stop them posting a third unanswered try in the 57th minute.

Arthars nabbed his double next to the posts and made no mistakes with the conversion to give North Sydney a 16-8 advantage.

Moments later, the Warriors proved they weren't out of the contest when hooker Karl Lawton sliced through to score. Harris-Tavita kicked the goal and the margin was just two points again.

New Zealand soon snatched a slim buffer. After a succession of offloads, Harris-Tavita threw a perfect cut-out pass that gave winger Junior Pauga the space and time needed to dot down.

Harris-Tavita's goal attempt bounced off the upright but New Zealand was in front 18-16 in a heart-stopping affair.

The Bears looked to have the final say when winger Nicholas Mougios athletically latched onto a cross-field kick to notch a try and edge the Bears ahead.

But Harris-Tavita took matters into his own hands to decide to result, crashing over for a last-gasp four-pointer in the 78th minute before booting the goal that propelled the Warriors into the finals.

Only going by this article as i didnt see the game but it seems Sao is putting in the 1%ers. Wonder if he will get rewarded for it.

Sixth straight finals campaign starts on Saturday
The Vodafone Warriors kick off their sixth consecutive Intrust Super Premiership play-offs campaign when they face the Mounties at Panthers Stadium on Saturday (5.15pm kick-off local time; 7.15pm NZT).

Two week one finals encounters will be played at Penrith’s home ground on Saturday with the other two on Sunday.

The Vodafone Warriors were set to miss out on the play-offs until standoff Chanel Harris-Tavita produced some last-ditch heroics scoring a try and then converting it to turn an 18-22 deficit into a 24-22 victory over North Sydney last Saturday.

As a joint-venture between the Vodafone Warriors and the Auckland Rugby League, the now-defunct Auckland Vulcans made the finals in 2013 after missing out in 2012. The following season the Vodafone Warriors took over ownership of the team, setting off an era which has seen them reach the play-offs every year.

It was a close-run business this time, though, with the Vodafone Warriors needing to snap a six-match losing streak to qualify.

The result left them seventh on 24 points with the Mounties finishing sixth on 26 points despite losing their last five matches.

The Vodafone Warriors have named an unchanged starting line-up to face the Canberra Raiders’ feeder side. It includes nine players with NRL experience, five of them in the starting pack.
