Following on from here but I didn’t think it should be hidden away in the CQ Bid thread.

Ipswich laces up for NRL pitch
August 14, 2010 - 12:55AM
The battle has officially begun. The Ipswich Jets football club has formed a bid team which is creating a business plan to pitch the city as the region most deserving of an NRL club.

Jets board chairman and the owner of a large law firm, Steven Johnson, will helm the bid team after he met with NRL boss David Gallop earlier this month.

Johnson discussed with Gallop the need for the Jets football club to hold the rights as sole bidders for any NRL team west of Brisbane.

While the team’s support base would include Logan and Toowoomba, it would be an Ipswich based team with a football club structure and no private ownership.

The side will likely be called the Ipswich Jets although the Western Jets also has support.

Johnson and a highly regarded businessman, whom he declined to name, have begun preparing a detailed business report which will prove why Ipswich deserves to be the NRL’s next expansion site.

Jets plan NRL bid
Chris Garry | 14th August 2010

Johnson and a highly regarded businessman, whom he declined to name, have begun preparing a detailed business report which will prove why Ipswich
deserves to be the NRL’s next expansion site.
“We do not want a private ownership model here in Ipswich that’s what I spoke with Gallop about,” Johnson, who owns Queensland Law Group, said.
“We will have a football club based team run by the Jets which will be part of the community.
“We are preparing a feasibility study which will prove we would be successful with this model.
“Our argument is quite compelling.
“In six to 12 months the NRL will call for submissions and our bid team will have a detail business plan to present.”

The bid team was formed after Gallop said two teams would likely be admitted for the 2013 season, one team based in an expansion area such as Peth, another in heartland such as Ipswich or Central Queensland.
Ipswich’s population is 170,000 but government forecasts state it will explode to more than 400,000 in the next two decades, providing a huge potential pool of footy-loving families.
The Ipswich Jets NRL team will initially play out of Suncorp Stadium while their own stadium is funded and built.
“Our vision for the Jets NRL team is to have heavy community involvement which ensures the great talent in the region can stay here until they are men,” Johnson said.
Former Brisbane Broncos and Melbourne Storm foundation CEO John Ribot owns the Jets League Club and will provide advice to the bid team, but will not be heavily involved.
“We won’t make a spectacle of this proposal, we want to keep it low key, but if Gallop wants a team here we will have the evidence to prove how it will work.
Last month Gallop told The Queensland Times that the NRL must expand to Ipswich for the future health of the game.
“The corridor around Ipswich is the fastest growing region in Australia and we need to be a part of it,” Gallop said.
“We need two teams in Brisbane and having a presence in the Ipswich region is a must for our game’s future.”

Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale is also part of the Jets bid team.
Pisasale said there was more than enough corporate support in Ipswich to fund the team.
The competition
THERE are three other formal competitors alongside the Ipswich Jets vying for the NRL’s next two licences: Perth Reds, Central Queensland and the Central Coast Bears.
The Central Queensland bid is based on a private ownership model and has the backing of a multi-millionaire.
Central Queensland is hoping to secure Gorden Tallis as their inaugural coach.
While the Central Coast Bears have enlisted for State of Origin player Matt Orford as a big name to help sell their pitch.
Orford will be the club’s inaugural assistant coach if the Bears are granted an NRL licence.
But Steve Johnson said he had no intention of bringing a big name in to help sell their bid.
“We don’t need to get some former great player involved,” Johnson said.
“We have the population, the history and the resources to run a successful club.
“Once the NRL sees our business plan they will see how much sense it makes and they would find it very hard to knock back.”

So the Bears could lose out to a team that has Ribot involved…

Aside from that it’s sounding really good so far imo.

I like the sound of it, although it would be nice if Ribot's name wasn't there.

They'd have to play their local derby with the Broncos at Suncorp. Really, I'd
like to see them play all of their games out of Suncorp.

After all, Lang Park is west of Brisbane :)

Perth Reds and Ipswich jets should be offered the next two franchises in the NRL.
Perth because it is booming and we need a presence there to make the competition truly national. Ipswich because QLD is rugby league heartland and must have another team.

PERTH REDS & IPSWICH JETS-2013.

If the NRL go to a 18 team comp in 2013, they are going to have some hard decisions to make..

Central Coast Bears should be a shoe in. Already have the stadium and the support, not to mention the juniors..

Central QLD and Ipswich have good reasons to be included not least because of the small amount of NRL teams in QLD for the massive fan base..

Perth simply for expansion and making the NRL TRULY National..

Adelaide and Wellington have less reason with PNG a lowly last..PNG would be better off professionalising their comp and trying to get NRL clubs interested in their players and having regular Tests..

I think the best way of moving forward to would be to drop the Sharks and introduce CC Bears, CQLD and Ipswich..

I agree with this.. Perth & Ipswich.. not Central Coast.
Central Coast and Wellington for 2016

Turning down the Central Coast for the second time within a decade would be a fatal mistake for rugby league.

Turning down the Central Coast for the second time within a decade would be a fatal mistake for rugby league.

You can turn any of these clubs down without necessarily turning them down perse.

There's nothing in concrete that says expansion clubs have to be in by 2013. If more clubs meet the criteria then there are spots available, than you can phase them in. Two in 2013, Two in 2017, but you can say 'yes' sooner.

However - if the TV rights are negotiated before expansion, then these games should be excluded from the deal and be negotiated later as seperate items until the next package is made. That would throw a curveball into the mix.

Perth and Brisbane II definitely bring bigger dollars into the mix and create a national footprint. Central Coast helps heal an old wound. Central QLD will be a boom area in 10+ years. More $$$ from TV deal means better player retention and stopping the exodus and having enough talent for those teams.

Followed by Adelaide, Sunshine Coast, Port Moresby, Wellington or Christchurch!!! For once options are something the NRL has too much of...

Ipswich has been on the cards for a long long time.. Gallop and the NRL have wanted a team in Ipswich for a long long time.. It would be the next biggest club from the Broncos, and would be in the best possible area a new NRL team could be in.

Ipswich will be in for a certain.

Perth would have the edge over CC.

I think the only way CC Bears will get in is if the Sharks or another club fold.

It's much better to have a team in Ipswich rather than basing them out of Brisbane. Plus the Jets have a history of rugby league and the Ipswich people would be proud to support them.

The problem is that people throughout the greater Brisbane area want a second NRL team, not just Ipswich.

An Ipswich based team alienates anyone else in the greater Brisbane region from supporting them, myself included.

A second Brisbane team should only be called "Brisbane" or "South QLD", and must play out of Suncorp.

regardless of Ribot's involvement, history should rule Ipswich out for at least a few years. The Jets have been a financial basket case for almost all of their existence and are little more than a "me too" bid on the back of a Gallop flag waving trip.
CQ, Central Coast, Perth, PNG and even NZ have more credible claims on an expansion spot.

Perth & Ipswich (as long as Ribot has no involvement).

Another SQ-QLD and Adelaide after them.

Wellington & Central QLD after them.

Central coast after them.

Central Coast had their chance with the Northern Eagles and it was a disaster. They should have to wait a while before being given another chance (plus the other teams are more in need of teams), let a Sydney club like the Sharks relocate if they want one earlier.

No way. So a bid that just starts is automatically in front ofthe ccbears bid who have been at it for decade. Have various major, minor and local sponsors. Have an increase in paid memberships to the point where we'll rival nrl teams soon for members and that's without a team! Have a ready stadium and a community UNITED behind us! Ipswich just started and central qld started last year. How can they be more favoured then the ccbears? After a decade of groundwork, lobbying and community work.. We ccbears deserve our chance!

Central Coast have a team an hour north and an hour south of them. Plenty more a bit more south. Ipswich has 2 teams about an hour away, but no more anywhere close.

Central Coast also used to have a part-time team there and received no support

Like it. Not sure they could get the team ready to go by 2013 though. For mine, Perth and the Central Coast have a number of years of planning behind them and are both ready to go, with stadiums, business plans, and a support base. They should get first dibs.

p.s. Razor, you're an idiot. The reason the Northern Eagles got no support was because of the most ridiculous idea in the history of rugby league: marrying North Sydney and Manly. Trying to force mortal enemies together was always doomed to failure, and it is no surprise the central coast refused to support such an absurdity.

Not only that the northern eagles were never a true central coast team, they were manly with some black and red lines in their jersey. Hence when the almagation ended many went back to manly instead of relocating fulltime on the cc. However the bears have been look to the cc since 96 with history between the cc and nsbears stretching 90years.

Razor u have no idea on the dealings of the cc, manly and norths. I do, like u live and breathe ur team.. I live and breathe the red & black bears. The entire situation of our bid is in the ccbears thread and official site of www.centralcoastbears.com.au

we are very advanced, all due to the hard work put in by the team 24.7 through the last decade.
