Whyalla Mayor downplays carbon tax impact

    Updated June 29, 2012 12:55:09

With the introduction of the carbon tax this weekend, the Mayor of Whyalla says a controversial prediction about the steel-making city has not come close.
The city attracted national attention last year when Federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott said it would be "wiped off the map" by the tax.
However, Mayor Jim Pollock says nothing could be further from the truth.
"The words carbon tax and mining tax in Whyalla at the moment are virtually non-existent," he said.
"I mean we're getting on with business on an everyday basis, the community is still very confident about the future of Whyalla.
"OneSteel are very confident about the future of their business in Whyalla and that gives security to all of their employees.
"You wouldn't really know that the carbon tax is going to be introduced."
Councillor Pollock says it is a non-issue for the city.
"Certainly that's a furphy, there's no way in the world that Whyalla will ever become a ghost town," he said.
"We've been through the roughs and toughs of the shipyards closing - we're resilient - we just get on with it and deal with it and adjust with it and cater for it accordingly."

Isn't compensation built into the tax ?

To be honest I don't know as I can't understand who gets compensated for what and by how much. The government has done a shithouse job of explaining things

Why does the car industry get so much cash from the government to produce cars nobody wants or will buy ?

Did Abbott ever say it would take 1 day for Whyalla to be wiped off the map?

Oh so he is playing the long game.

Look eventually Whyalla and indeed the entire planet will cease to exist so in a sense he is right I suppose......

Come on Rooster, his Whyalla claim is right up there with no more Kakadu

So Butchmctaxlover you can't tell me why onesteel are getting 64 million in tax compo if it wont affect their business.

What happens when the compo is gone and they can't power their steel plant with solar panels ?

It appears it was indeed going to affect the business, without ongoing compo they'd be f**ked.

The govt should just let them fold and whyalla can embrace the new green future.
