Gareth Widdop was named in the halves for the NRL 2017 Team of the Year, and Paul Vaughn was named at 15 in the interchange.

Widdop (6): It looked so good early on for the Dragons and if they had defeated Canterbury last Sunday their captain and five-eighth would have earned many of the plaudits. Started the year by dismantling the Panthers in Round 1 and had earned three Team of the Week selections by Round 5, finishing the year with 18 try assists, 16 line-break assists along with 10 tries, 75 goals and a match-winning field goal for 191 points.

Vaughn (15): Was regarded as the buy of the year early in the season as he helped the Dragons get off to a flyer, his absence due to a calf injury exacerbating St George Illawarra's mid-season stumbles. Continued to rack up plenty of metres in the back-end of the season but his team still fell short of finals.

Notable Mentions: Nene McDonald, Paul Vaughn (for starting spot), James Graham and Jack De Belin were all runners-up for the TOTY spots in terms of Dragons players, present and future.

The rest of the list:

1. Tom Trbojevic (Sea Eagles)

McGregor wins hands down, Coaching Imposter of the Year.
The award was presented to the teary-eyed former player by none other than his love child, Josh McCrone.

This caused McCrone to miss his flight to Canada. McGregor took the opportunity to re-sign McCone for another 12 months, relegating new player Ben Hunt to the bench.

The Players’ Champion – Top 23

The Rugby League Players Association (RLPA) has named the Top 23 Finalists for The Players’ Champion, which will be held at The Star on Tuesday, September 12.

As revealed on the NRL Footy Show last night, the star-studded group of Finalists will all be vying for The Players’ Champion; which celebrates the world’s best Rugby League player, as voted by NRL players.

Last year’s winner, Jason Taumalolo (North Queensland) features amongst the 23 Finalists, with young guns Nathan Cleary (Panthers) and Ash Taylor (Titans) also in the running for the prestigious award.

Adding to the excitement of this year’s event is that for the first time ever, The Players’ Champion will be shown live and free on 9GEM.

Channel 9 personalities Erin Molan and James Bracey will host the evening, with a range of awards to be presented that recognise the performance of players across all areas of the game.

Rugby League Immortals Wally Lewis and Andrew Johns will also present awards on the night, along with a host of other high-profile sporting personalities who will be in attendance.

The entertainment will include DJ Sal Morale (USA) and the return of The Stafford Brothers – who were one of the highlights of last year’s successful event.

“The Players’ Champion was re-imagined last year to deliver a celebration that reflects the great achievements of Players across the game,” RLPA CEO, Ian Prendergast, said.

“As the professionalism of our members drives incredible performances on-field, it’s important that we take The Players’ Champion to another level.

“Broadcasting the event live on 9GEM is a perfect opportunity to showcase the significance of this event to Rugby League Players.

“This is truly a peer-voted award, which is why The Players’ Champion is held in such high regard by Players.

“The list of 23 Finalists for 2017 season includes some of the game’s biggest names such as Cameron Smith, Billy Slater and Sam Burgess – it’s an exciting group of players and voting is closer than ever.”

Previous winners of The Players’ Champion include current NRL stars such as Taumalolo (2016), Johnathan Thurston (2005, 13-15), Darius Boyd (2010) and Jarryd Hayne (2009).

Other awards on the night include the first ever Players’ Team of the Year, Representative Player of the Year, Women’s Player of the Year, The Dennis Tutty Award (Player Advocacy) and Rookie of the Year.

The NRL’s Wellbeing and Education awards will also be held on the night, with winners in the categories of Academic, Indigenous and Pasifika set to be acknowledged for their important contribution throughout 2017.
