It's an outstanding number. Based on countries who don't have compulsory voting, i'd be surprised if we had that sort of turnout to federal elections if we had non-compulsory voting.

Also it appears that people who are married (assume to non-SS partner) are more likely to vote against same sex people being able to marry

So essentially, religious people voted no, people with no religion voted yes.

    How surprising

Well for places like Melbourne you're probably more likely to find younger and more unattached people aren't you?
Also, less likely to have conservative views and therefore not going to value marriage like a conservative does.
Ie has a few kids before contemplating marriage.
Most of modern progressive society views marriage as a true commitment to one another, that's why gender is irrelevant to these people.
Conservatives view marriage as the foundation of the family unit, something that is becoming outdated regardless of gay marriage being legalized.

To be fair, this could have been on compassionate grounds.

They could have been trying to save the LGBT community from the pain of marriage.

Good old polyamory, because one girlfriend isn't enough, you also need another girlfriend AND boyfriend.
Seems to me it's just a more committed version of 'swinging'.
