With expansion sadly looking far away, imagine if the NRL had gotten it right in the past. If you were able to redo where the NRL clubs are located what would your NRL look like?

4 teams in Queensland
Brisbane Broncos
Brisbane Tigers
North Queensland Cowboys
Gold Coast Titans

6 in NSW
North Sydney Sea Eagles
East Sydney Roosters
South Sydney Rabbitohs
West Sydney Eels
Newcastle Knights
Illawarra Dragons

4 in other parts of Australia
Canberra Raiders
Melbourne Storm
Perth Panthers
Adelaide Sharks

2 in NZ
Auckland Warriors
Christchurch Bulldogs

For me that's the best looking the NRL could be from and expansion perspective

I think the original Super League proposal was pretty spot on...

They just needed a better spread of Sydney teams and a few BRL teams for the local derbies in heartland.

I thought you said afl was a non entity despite all the money spent?

They are ,but they won't be if we do the rationalisation as suggested above.Who will all the fans of the clubs flicked or relocated follow?Seriously champ, it's fair to say fans have more allegiance to their traditional clubs than the game as a whole.

Laughable suggestion...

The architects of Super League the Broncos weren't sharing Brisbane with anybody.

My National competition would be:

East Sydney Roosters
South Sydney Rabbitohs
Cronulla Sutherland Sharks
Manly Warringah Sea Eagles
Central Coast Bears(Bears fans are regained and a big regional area is also gained with derbies as well!)
Paramatta Eels
Balmain Campbelltown Tigers(The iconic Balmain name is regained with a western Sydney growth area!)
Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs
Penrith Panthers
West Coast Pirates or West Coast Magpies(linked to Wests Magpies club in Sydney)
Brisbane Broncos
Brisbane Dolphins
North Queensland Cowboys
Auckland Warriors
Welliington Orcas
Melbourne Storm
Newcastle Knights
Canberra Raiders
St George Illawarra Dragons
Adelaide Dingoes
Gold Coast Titans
Pacific Islanders?(not sure how this would work? but is gets us to 22 teams with no bye.)
(Note: Possibly delay Orcas & Islanders teams if 20 is good in the medium to short term)
22 team comp which is what the NRL should have now except the Super league fiasco occurred!
Excuse my imagination but we all have imaginations. Lol. (But you get what I'm on about I hope)
These teams can be divided strategically and geographically into conferences of 11 teams whereby they play each other twice and then play the other conference teams once. Top four for each conference make the playoffs. And so on. Perhaps a wild card round for teams that just miss out to spice things up a bit ?The more the merrier in my books. This minimalist/defeatist policy supported by News Ltd and poor NRL administrators is hurting the code no end as it stands today!
International games to be played two weeks or three after the National grand final is played in every season.

Haha, its good to have a bit of fun with these threads. But seriously my idea is great. Relocate all of the Sydney teams (except my team Parra) and bring in 5 new Sydney teams.

Lets be honest with ourselves in a perfect world Illawarra wouldn't be in the NRL, they're basically what the Central Coast is to the north of Sydney but to the south of Sydney in NRL terms, wedged in between two bigger more centralised markets and within an hour or two from live NRL if they really want to see it. Also Calling them Illawarra is really a misnomer because even when the Steelers where around they only really represented Wollongong.

Don't get me wrong it'd be nice from a nostalgia point of view to see the Steelers back in the NRL, but it isn't whats really in the best interests of the NRL or the game as a whole to invest so many resources into a relatively small area that is so close to so many other teams already in the competition.

And the AFL applauds that program.Suggesting SL couldn't have done it better.Great entrees to Sydney's West and South.
They are ,but they won't be if we do the rationalisation as suggested above.Who will all the fans of the clubs flicked or relocated follow?Seriously champ, it's fair to say fans have more allegiance to their traditional clubs than the game as a whole.

You know people are constantly asserting that if a club is removed from an area that all that clubs fans and the region as a whole will suddenly become AFL fans, but never once have I seen any evidence to even suggest that there's any significant bleed off from RL to AFL or whatever other sport after a club is lost, and what bleed off there is I think most likely can be attributed to people who already were interested in the AFL/whatever to some degree anyway.
And even when they give examples like after SL they can only show correlation and not causation and ignore plenty of other contributing factors, and even on top of that they can't show that the up swing in support is from ex RL fans jumping on board.

In my opinion it's basically just an idea that somebody chucked out there some time ago (probably a journo in some old opinion peace) that a bunch off people have latched onto because on the surface of it sounds like it could be true, that has been repeated over and over until it's just become accepted as fact in some circles (generally in circles that find it convenient to believe) without any proper study or even just thought being put into it.
