Youth Rugby Camps begin

Rugby League has been added to the after school program at two local Jacksonville area schools and the Axemen will volunteer their time to coach those kids that have an interest in the sport.

The Camp started with some classroom work
Axemen Head Coach Sean Rutgerson along with fellow import Brent Shorten joined Spinner Howland in delivering the basics of Rugby League during the first day of camp. The partnership with Communities in Schools allows not only a diverse sporting option but with the three coaches being from Australia it also presents a great cultural exchange.

The ultimate plan is to have a team from both the Highlands Middle School and the Jeb Stewart Middle School compete in a flag rugby league game as the curtain raiser at the final home game for the Axemen in the 2009 season on July 18.
All three coaches from the Axemen commented that the kids seemed very interested in the sport and the fact that each player got to play both offense and defense appeared to be the most popular aspect.

The Axemen hope that introducing Rugby League into local area schools will also help expose the sport to potential athletes in the future and that among them are some of the future superstars.
The Axemen also want to extend a huge thank you to the Rugby Football League (RFL) development office in the UK for their help in the effort along with the American National Rugby League administration.

Just looking at some of those kids there and God help the rest of the world if Africans embrace the game. Big, fast, tall, athletic. They would have a team of Greg Inglis'.

Well done to the Axemen and all the others involved, grass roots is the only way to go.

Hopefully these kids will get their friends interested and it spreads from there.

This is great news for the game in the USA. A real positive step. While it may be just the first step and a small one at that, it shows the game is heading in the right direction there.

Is it just me, or does it appear the Axaman are the only team in the US trying to promote the game?

Same can be said of Russia. If Russia and the USA get serious about league Aus, GB and NZ are going to have headaches.
