There was talk that "one of the most influential men in rugby league" was keen to take the job a few weeks ago when this first broke. Wonder if he is still keen?

Zappia stands down
Jacquelin Magnay

June 8, 2009 - 1:21PM
Cronulla's chief executive Tony Zappia has stood down from his position today.
The board has demanded a response from him over a recording that throws new light on a case involving former employee Jenny Hall.
In a statement, Cronulla's chairman, Barry Pierce, said that the board had accepted an offer from Zappia to stand down, effective immediately, and had demanded a response from Zappia and his legal team by Thursday.
Pierce said that Zappia was entitled to due process and the opportunity to respond.
He said the board would wait until it had received that legal advice and a lot would depend on that.
"Tony has reserved the right to seek independent legal advice to answer fresh allegations brought forward on a new report last night," Mr Pierce said.
He said the board would request that Channel Seven provide the tape so that the board could establish its "authenticity" and staff members would also be interviewed in relation to the allegations.
The decision follows an explosive development that has rocked the NRL involving a recording that throws new light on the circumstances surrounding the $20,000 payout to former Cronulla employee Jenny Hall.
In the dramatic tape recording, played on Channel Seven News last night, Zappia tries to blame a wall for the severe facial bruising suffered by Hall and then he attempts to appease her by showing her pornography on his work computer. He also refuses to allow her to take sick leave.

Do you not have faith in Sticky anymore?

Just because Sticky was instrumental in bringing this goose to the club and continues to support him doesn't mean I don't have faith in Sticky as a coach.

Zappia is just another phuquewit who has let Ricky down in my eyes.

Most articles are like that these days... Pretty much copied off a generalised news wire service.

Sticky has said time & time again the Zappia is the best man that any club can get as CEO. Our organisation will be worse off for his loss.
If our coach , who is an absolute gun has this faith, then why are some of us on here saying things different, based purely on media reports?
I agree that Zapps position is untenable, however our club is the gravy train for lying cheating women. We need to take action & we need to aim up & stop getting rolled over & getting farked up the arsse

That's like saying a coach has the full support of the board...

Zappia has been doing a horrible job in my opinion irregardless of the media reports. The club will be better now that he, and Barry are both gone.

Sticky should perhaps confine his expertise where it is best used. Between the white lines of a football field. There's no doubt that he has backed the wrong horse with Zappia.

Current media reports are just the tip of the iceberg for me. It's narrow of anyone to think the events of the last 24 hours are what I base my anti Zappia feelings on.

He's shown time and again that he'll readily hang players out to dry. His knee jerk responses and heavy handed treatment of our players have without doubt been contributory to on field performances. The timing of his sacking of Bird, just as he himself needed a diversion, was very suspicious.

What has he actually brought to the club?

He may well have been a wiz at operating a football club, from what I saw he was pretty sharp in that regard. Still, it can't be denied from this saga that he lacked the social skill set to remain in a management position at the club, and I say that in two regards: he clearly was unable to maintain a professional employment relationship with his staff (football staff and arguably playing staff - see Seymour) and he was a hapless, limp performer in the media.

We probably could have escaped with keeping him given we've already been dragged through the mud, but why keep the target planted firmly on your backside and let them keep on sniping at him from afar? What else could they dredge up? Of more concern, how could he ever look at the next Shark who lays a finger inappropriately on a girl and stand him down/fine him? He couldn't

For mine, the focus turns to finding an appropriate replacement. Not a mug ex-footballer. Not a relative of some hack whose crowning achievement was spending two decades swilling piss in the Steve Rogers bar. A go getter with a clean slate. Or Gow (the jersey cutting incident shouldn't be held against him) - a man with passion, know-how and contacts.

Hall is obviously as cunning as a sh*thouse rat, but Zappia was clearly a sleaze and from the way he has tried to bury the whole incident with payoff and dodgy documentation. I, for one, am happy to see the arse end of him.

Frenzy I'm with you... Sticky is going through the wringer for supporting Zapps and coming out and saying how good he is. It's now reasonable to suggest Zappia is a sleaze and a creep. Is Ricky guilty by association?
