Hodkinson and Reynolds NSW Halves

With Pearce likely to face sanction, and new halves pairing will be required as Maloney would be less effective with a new 7.

The selectors have shown they prefer club combinations so who better to take on the Maroons than the in form Dog combo.

No, not Hokko. He's not an origin-type player. Both Reynold boys played well for City - I'd say go with that.

Yes Yes Yes

Hokko is a goal kicker and in form. Tough character with solid defence.

Bad luck that the draw does not suit their selection for NSW, obviously when the draw was concocted the Pearce drama couldn't have been calculated.

It might derail the dogs premiership run but think of the greater good and that is Origin and the holy grail of a NSW win.

Surely you would back your own players over others.

No I won't - I'm not biased. If you're basing Hokko's selection on goal kicking, that is not justice enough, as Adam Reynolds is just as good.

I like Hokko and think he can do many things but he doesn't really take the game by the scruff like he may be called on to do. His defence is great and he's cool as ice but he doesn't have the game breaking play in him like a JT etc. Then again, neither did Pearce.

I think Mullen is probably more likely but I think Hokko would do his job.

If you were using the City Country game to decide, then Adam Reynolds and Mullen were the two best on field and would be the halves.

It's depressing how folks just select halves who seem to look alright with their monster forwards rolling down the park.

And now we have an emerging philosophy that both halves must come from the same club too.

It appears it ain't just the NSW selectors and coaches that can't identify talent real talent.

Please....my reasoning for wanting the Bulldogs pair to play for NSW is not just because there from the same club....

so it's because they play behind a dominating pack and are winning games then?

how about comparing their attributes as halves against other halves, rather than the score lines their team can post which is largely dependent on other variables.....like their entire team being more dominant than the other.

it's the same mistakes NSW make every season. oh look, player X is playing as a half for team Y who is killing it. Select them.

Anasta; Finch; Wallace; Soward; Maloney; Carney; Pearce, etc.

I am really leaning towards Sutton being there. He is ready and I think if Mullen takes the 7 we'll have a good combo.

Grubby off the bench either to hooker or 5/8 if required and Sutton pushes in to the pack.

This is how I'm leaning now too-

J Reynolds is a lock to at least get the 14 jersey, but if Pearce is out Hokko is about as like to like to Pearce as you are going to get. Admitably Pearce has pretty much been a bystander at Origin level, but if Lozza has already based the rest of the team around Pearce being there than Hokko should be next in line...

Then if you assume Hokko will be at 7 why not run with Reynolds at 6, been arguably the form player of the comp this season playing outside Hodkinson.

Whoever we go with I think we are going to get lapped regardless though this year *sigh*

I think you need to reward incumbents and players with experience. a maloney/gidley combo would be just the thing for nsw :sarcasm:

A strong showing against the warriors will see Hodkinson, Reynolds and Williams all get picked for the blues.. There in form and deserve a shot...

The simple fact is that there is dearth of talent available. Mullen and Carney are the only two established halves NSW have available who are proper talented footballers. I also rate the Titans pair, but they are much less experienced and both currently struggling with injury anyway. I said months ago our halves should be 6. Mullen and 7. Carney (doesn't really matter about numbers), and I'm sticking to that.

Mullen and Carney are obviously the best and always have been. Neither one of them will get a look in though. They'll keep picking halves that have the hype due to their club's performances...halves that benefit from having massive forward packs and good structures at club level but don't have the skills or vision to perform away from that. Happens year after year.
