World cup hype in Australia

Why is the world cup hype in Australia extremely low this time around? The hype around the last two campaigns was a lot bigger than now.

Perhaps because they know they are just lambs to the slaughter at this WC... It's a crap team, in THE toughest group...

Was there ever that much hype? Even in '06 all I remember was the car flags people put on. Yes it was talked about a lot but the enthusiasm wasn't exactly visible.

I am actually currently living in the country of one of our three opponents and the hype hasn't picked up really.

Plenty of decorations at restaurants/pubs and promotions on TV but far less than I was expecting in terms of ordinary people. Maybe that will change by the weekend.

06 was really exciting, especially that Croatia game. Great tournament.

There was hype in '10 but it was tempered pretty quickly by getting reamed by Germany.

This time there's a general expectation we're going to be thumped

You think Australia has no World Cup hype?

If it weren't for foreigner bars here spamming the shit out of it, you could pretend it didn't even exist here in China.

Because now we're expected to make it. In 2006 it was our first one in 32 years... of course that celebratory culture has died down.

I think the hype in the lead up to 2006 wasn't that great tbh... The live sites weren't packed out or anything like that if I recall. Once we snagged that win against Japan, however, then people took note. Even still, the hype machine didn't truly get going till after the Croatia game. I was in and around parramatta for work at that stage and Peter Wynns was completely packed out every day with people buying up socceroos jerseys. Pity most only wore them once

In 2010 the hype leading in was much bigger, with cross code involvement (socceroos players on the footy show for example), and generally all the commercial channels getting involved. Then Germany f**ked us and everyone got over it. If the match order was reversed and we played Serbia first though, then interest would have remained high for the tournament.

2014, frankly I think everyone understands we are on a hiding to nothing, and given the vast vast majority of soccer support in Australia is bandwagon then it's to be expected that it would not be as high this time.

^ Danish hit the nail on the head. Australians love to jump on a bandwagon. Most people think we have no chance hence nobody jumping on said bandwagon.

Yeah Danish is right. I remember those socceroos ads featuring african wildlife playing a game with socceroos players at night time, in the lead-up to and during the WC. Can't believe that was 4 years ago already.

The vast vast majority is bandwagon support?

Hmmm...

An estimated 7 million Australians watched the socceroos round of 16 game against Italy.

The socceroos combined tv audience of all World Cup qualifiers from the entire campaign leading into this World Cup would be lucky to match that.

The World Cup is like the Olympics. For the majority of people watching this will be the only time they watch soccer every 4 years

Talking out of your arse again. The last 3 qualifying games had a combined audience of 5m. Pretty sure the previous 11 would have more than 2m.

This is the same situation for every country. More interest in the finals than the qualifiers.

The obvious difference between qualifying and the finals aside, you didn't actually say the vast vast amount of support for the socceroos at the World Cup, you specifically said the code.
