Tigers Tale

I hope Taylor has really learnt from Trent Robinson, both tactical skills and certainly man management. It seems Paul Green did, had the Cowboys going pretty well, especially the latter half of the season.

Taylor might just get the most out of our players but I hope he just picks players on merit and not reputation. We really need that old adage of a 'new broom sweeping clean'....

I know people dredge up the fact he was a Magpie, but it's been decades since. I really can't see him being anything other than impartial. Lawrence and Galloway might be skating on thin ice.

I don't think he will either. I hope his focus and heart is 100% Wests Tigers and I'm confident it will be.

His only real challenge will be managing the ego's and the biggest and sorest ego isn't Farah's.

It's Rowdy's.

When he named the players he was excited about, Sironen's name was not mentioned. I sense some change in the air and hope for next year.

Rowdy? Really? Despite his obvious shortcomings since his injury he's always tried his guts out. Might be a wounded ego, but certainly not out of control.

I want to see a coach who picks on form and effort and isn't afraid to drop under performers, no matter what their surname is, or how much they are getting paid.

I think that's what most of us want - sadly some are so blinded by a name they see things that are not there...

Gee I feel bad for Mick Potter now.

Potter had backbone and did it the hard way. All that hard graft on a platter to a goose like JT.

Never seen such a thorough white anting to a strong character. Henjak was the last one I remember to get shafted so hard after pushing the change through.

JT has a good football brain but you need a leader now. Ironically he may go ok now cos of Potter putting his neck on the line with Benni and Robbie.
Tend to agree, injuries with a young squad made it hard for Potter, but good luck anyway

Id like to know what salary cap leverage Taylor has to work with....
Assuming it is zero.

We are desperate for some quality in the backrow over next two years.

This team could make Taylor a coaching great with multiple premierships.
Or........................he could be out of a job by Round 10 next year.....

New Wests Tigers coach Jason Taylor delivers 'professional' message to team

Michael Carayannis
Published: October 9, 2014 - 10:00PM

New Wests Tigers coach Jason Taylor left his players with a simple message; "become professional" when he met the squad for the first time.

While Taylor doesn't officially take the reins of the club until next month, he has wasted little time in planning for 2015. Taylor fronted his first club function at the Tigers' end of season awards last Friday and met the playing group at the club's Concord headquarters prior to the event.

The former Wests Magpies halfback also sat down with skipper Robbie Farah the day before.

"My relationship with all of the players is enormously important, but no one more important than the captain of the team, so I definitely wanted to talk to Robbie one-on-one before I met with the team so he and I were clear about how our relationship's going to build," Taylor said.

"Not a great deal came out of that conversation other than the fact that he knows where I'm coming from.

"I think for all of them, when there's been a change like this and when you've had a bit of a season that you'd rather forget, when you meet the new coach, it sort of then puts last season behind you. Everybody can now look forward having met the new coach and look forward to that with some optimism."

Farah faced a challenging 2014 after being thrown into the spotlight because of his relationship with former coach Mick Potter. He became the face of the club's off-field woes as he battled an elbow injury, won an Origin series before the Tigers faltered in their run to the finals.

Taylor said he could relate with Farah having gone through his own setbacks in his rugby league career.

"I talked to him about the fact that rugby league can be a real tough game on and off the field and just how I understand how he felt because as a player and a coach I've gone through those ups and downs," Taylor said.

"I just wanted him to understand that I know what that feels like. And I think that that would help him to realise that I can be a good sounding board and give him good support, because we're going to have some tough times again.

"Everybody here's had a tough year, but we're not going to be immune from that, from going through some tough times again. It's just how you come out the other side of it."

Taylor, who has spent the past two seasons as Trent Robinson's assistant at the Roosters, had a clear message for the rest of the playing squad.

"[It was] about them getting themselves into a professional state of mind," he said. "Pretty simple stuff, but the real basics of being a professional rugby league player.

"I just wanted to take the opportunity that they were all going to be together today to just talk to them about some things I want them to start thinking about in relation to focus areas for us once we start training."

Taylor is yet to finalise his coaching staff, but Penrith's high performance manager Matt Cameron is set to join former Panther Phil Moss at the club after Moss became the Tigers' general manager of football operations.

Taylor will spend the next few weeks poring over footage as he tries to familiarise himself with his new charges.

"I've got to do a bit of work watching some of the games from this season and getting to know what players bring what to the team," he said. "You don't know individuals at a club when you're coaching an opposition team anywhere near as you do once you get there.

"I need to really just get into a few hours of watching the team play and really get an understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the guys."

Well if there's one coach you guys want to fix up your defence it's him. I'm pretty sure in 2007 when he came round we had the best defence in the competition, or up there. We didn't have much attack but your lineup is filled with attacking flair with the likes of Brooks, Moses, Tedesco and Nofoaluma.

If you guys come 7th/8th it will be a successful year imo.

David Kidwell is one of the sole survivors as new mentor Jason Taylor puts a broom through the Wests Tigers' coaching ranks.
Upon replacing Mick Potter, Taylor was given authority to bring in his own coaching staff and hasquickly embarked on a cleanout.
Former Tigers Steve Roach, Paul Sironen, Todd Payten and John Skandalis have remained involved with the club after their playing careers, but all will be moved on when pre-season training commences.
Like Potter, the quartet were all off contract and will not be given new deals. Sironen's role as NYC manager no longer exists, while Roach will always be welcome to contribute at Concord Oval despite the Tigers opting not to continue with a specialist forwards coach.
Tigers NYC coach Andrew Webster has accepted a job as an assistant to Andrew McFadden at the Warriors, while former assistant Payten isn't in the club's plans moving forward.
The Tigers are yet to settle on a strength and conditioning coach, a position that has been held by Luke Portese.
Kidwell, who was an assistant to Potter, has been given an opportunity to remain with the joint-venture outfit after impressing in his first year in the job. He is also poised to join the New Zealand national side as an assistant to Stephen Kearney for the Four Nations.
Kidwell has a relationship with Taylor from their time at South Sydney; Kidwell was the Rabbitohs captain when Taylor was the head coach at the foundation club.
While he has only recently been appointed, Taylor has already begun to put his stamp on the Tigers. He has appointed Matt Cameron, with whom he worked at Parramatta, as an assistant.
The former North Sydney halfback also has a good relationship with another former Eels official – the Tigers' new head of football, Phil Moss.
With the majority of his staff in place, Taylor is now focused on the best preparation for his playing roster when they return from their annual holiday. The former NSW representative has already met with his team .
"I've been pleasantly surprised with a number of things in relation to the attitude of the players," Taylor said.
"It is a tight group, which is something I'm pleased to come across. It's only early days. I've had a chat with the group and a few individuals."
One of those individuals is Robbie Farah. The captain has conceded there were times when he questioned his future at the club during a tumultuous year, but Taylor said the Blues rake was in a good frame of mind in the lead up to the pre-season.
"We've talked about a lot of things and we walked away confident that we'll build a good working relationship," Taylor said.
The Tigers recently announced the signings of Kevin Naiqama for a one-year deal, and Chance Peni for two seasons.
Naiqama joins the Tigers after a stint with Penrith in which he scored seven tries in eight NRL appearances and was a key member of the NSW Cup premiership-winning Panthers side.

I'll put my hand up and say I was certainly wrong. I stated that Payten will be there next year.

I had this info from a Tiger insider but what would these back office guys know

Taylor has certainly surrounded himself with 'his' people though hasn't he.

One name to me thinking from the article above. Siro senior is gone. I'd say that Siro junior is on notice to perform because the family name isn't going to help him.

By by Blocker, no 2GB, SOO or West Tigers.

Not sure Sirro had done much wrong & I would've been happy if he had've been retained.

Great to hear Payten & Blocker got the arse.

Kidwell must go
