A three or four year contract wouldn't cost us roughly the same - the difference would probably be about $400k. Obviously then it would come down to whether Watmough intends to play that final year (or longer) and whether he thinks he could earn another contract if he initially took a year less than he wanted (for more money up front). Obviously both player and club are taking risks with long contracts for 30+ year olds.

Anyway I'd say the difference here is between a two and three year contract rather than between three and four years. We could be offering Watmough $1.2M for two years vs $1.6M for three. And a $400k contract in 2017 won't be as significant a proportion of the salary cap as it is right now.

Anyway it's all speculation. And we'll never know all the facts.

You're right, we'll never know, but you can be sure that a few people here will hint that they do.

A 3 year contract shouldn't be roughly the same as a 4 year contract, but it would be pretty insulting to suddenly reduce the length of the contract by a year and 400K. And what's he really gonna do with more money up front, save a few bucks on his mortgage?

As for 2 years vs 3, why would he play here for less money (1.6M vs 1.8M) than Manly were offering? Or take a shorter contract? Sure, Manly might have spent their dough by now and can't offer him what they previously - reportedly - did, but again that's pretty insulting. Wouldn't be a smart negotiating tactic IMO.

Treat him well, he'll try his arse off at the very least. It's a bit like when we needed a forward leader and went out and got Kennedy.

If he does in fact sign with us (which presumably he will) it is a very good signing.
Arthur has obviously seen that we needed to strengthen our forward pack, and this goes a long way to doing just that.
With a fit Peats, Mossop and Ma'u, plus the emergence of Moeora...add Watmough to the lineup and we are definitely stronger. Wicks may add something up front as well. Same as Fa'aoso.

Shame our backline has gone down in quality, but hopefully not so much that our improved forward pack won't won't make a difference.

i would love to see our pack step up just so that timmy mannah can be considered more seriously for rep honours. if these boys can get in the mix for origin etc, it will mean we've gone well;

choc
mannah
peats
hoppa

maybe even tepai, he's put his hand up for origin.

Some reports saying it's a 2 year deal with the eels

I can't see him agreeing to a 2 year deal but let's hope it's not for four years. It will be interesting to see if he puts in for us the way he has put in for Manly or whether he treats it as a cruisy semi retirement.

BA has the balls to drop him at least.

The signings. We have the perfect opportunity to nail some top notch signings and all we have done is sign has beens.

Most of the dead wood has been moved on yet we continue to bring in players of no quality.

I don't think these are signings BA would make in my opinion though I suppose he may be told that we can only sign these types of blokes due to reasons we dont know.

I've met and known a lot of people in the club over the years and most of them are no longer there, doesn't mean I stop supporting the club and every fan/member can show their frustrations as well.

Personally I dont think Watmough is worth $600k, are we going to get $600k worth out of him? Is he a match winner? Is he gonna win us the game with a minute on the clock, are we gonna give him the ball on the 5th tackle?

Your playmaker/organiser should be on that type of money, not a backrower. We look to be heading back to the days when our no.11 (Hindy) is our highest paid player, those days are gone and you need to be spending the cash on your spine cause they are the blokes who are gonna get us in the 8.

You wouldn't hear Cowboys fans cheering if Thurston left and people use the term "Oh thank god he has gone, we can now buy a decent 6 and 9".

It's just silly if you ask me.

I agree with you regarding Whatmough. But I think all the other signings are okay. You say we have a great opportunity to sign some good players, but most of the ones we would want don't come off contract until the end of next year. These are just one year signings (one or two of them might actually be very good, though). The thing about Whatmough is that Arthur would know him very well, but I'm still not over the moon about it. I think it could be a big mistake.

How f**king dumb are you merkins!

It's an opportunity to rebalance our squad and bring in more of what we need (toughness and experience that isn't chronically injured or 35 years old). We don't need to replace Hayne with attacking backline talent - we already have plenty in Sandow and Hopoate. We need to improve our defence, especially in the middle because it was atrocious this year.

Well, we do. Our attack in the opposition quarter was abysmal this year. Hopefully Champion and Robinson might help with that. After Tonga was unavailable, we couldn't score to save our lives. More tries would have meant more possession and less pressure on our defence. But I take your point about our defence in the forwards up to a point. (We also missed Peats , big time, don't forget.) It would be nice to think that Watmough might inspire our forwards in that department next year - but we'll have to wait and see.
