In the perfect world for rugby league the NRL would have franchises in

Townsville
Brisbane
Gold Coast (I did say the perfect world)
Newcastle
Sydney
Wollongong
Canberra
Melbourne
Adelaide
Perth
New Zealand (2 teams - possibly Auckland & Christchurch)

That gives 12 locations of at least one team in each. Brisbane could cope with two teams and Sydney four teams. That would give a total of 16 teams.

I'd add PNG into that mix, in an ideal world.

Not sure why people want 2nd NZ, no where near enough interest IMO.

It is not the like Warriors have won and just keep winning, as opposed to Brisbane where a 2nd team is a no brainer.

And just to clarify, Lang Park is the ONLY stadium in Brisbane that can host League - GABBA is the other venue, no good for league

Ipswich does not have one, So should it be Brisbane Bombers or Ipswich, they will play @ Lang Park

Seeing as we are on this topic will say what I have said before, the mergers were done incorrectly. It was political, tribal not logical.

Souths and St. George should have merged, Southern inner city Club
1. Souths-St George Dragons (1 billion premierships they would say)
Games @ SFS, Kogarah
1 x NSW cup team - Based @ Henson

Cronulla should have merged with Illawarra, Southern Sydney to Wollongong and further south NSW coast to Canberra territory
2. Cronulla-Illawarra Sharks ( Still no Premierships:( )
Games @ Shark Park, WIN Stadium
1 x NSW cup team - Based @ Illawarra

Sydney City should have merged with North Sydney and Balmain, Central Sydney Club
3. Sydney City Tigroostbears - who is good at photo shop? need a hybrid of a Tiger a rooster and a bear. Tigroostbear
Games @ SFS, Leichhardt (upgraded)
1 x NSW cup team - Based @ Leichhardt

Canterbury should have merged with Wests, South Western Suburban and rural down to the border of Canberra territory
4. South Western Sydney Bulldogs
Games @ Homebush, Campbelltown and Belmore
1 x NSW cup team - Based @ Campbelltown

Parramatta - Central West and Northern Suburbs of Sydney
5. Parramatta Eels
Games @ Parramatta
1 x NSW Cup team - Based @ Wentworthville

Penrith - Foot of the Mountains and western NSW
6. Penrith Panthers
Games @ Penrtih and one game in NSW west, Orange, Bathurst, Wagga etc
1 x NSW Cup team - Based @ St Marys

Manly sadly to just stay but incorporate the Gosford region
7. Manly-Gosford Sea Eagles
Games @ Central Coast and Brookvale (upgraded)
1 x NSW cup team - Based @ Woy Woy

Newcastle - No change required but more done up the coast
8. Newcastle Knights
Games @ Newy and FFS take a game to Coffs or something 1 game per year in a Northern NSW town
1 x NSW Cup team - Based @ Nelsons Bay

Canberra - No change required - Canberra and Southern NSW
9. Canberra Raiders
Games @ Canberra and FFS take a game to Goulburn or something 1 game per year in a Southern NSW town
1 x NSW Cup team - Based in (Not QLD or Sydney) Buy a club in Goulburn or Griffith FFS and send your reggies there.

North QLD - No Change Required - Other than CQ will take that area
10 North Queenland Cowboys
Games @ Townsville
2 x QLD cup teams - Blackhawks, Pride

Central QLD - New team
11. Central Queensland Capras
Games @ Rockhampton (New state of the art Government (has Federal, State and Local bi partisian support) and Corporate funded Stadium)
2 x QLD Cup team - Capras, Cutters

Brisbane II - Moreton, Lockyer, Ipswich and Sunshine Coast
12. Brisbane whatevers
Games @ Lang Park
3 x QLD Cup teams - Redcliffe, Sunshine Coast, Ipswich

Brisbane Broncos - Brisbane City, Logan, Redlands
13. Brisbane Broncos
Games @ Lang Park
4 x QLD Cup teams - Norths, Easts, Wynnum Manly, Souths Logan

Gold Coast - Gold Coast and Northern NSW
14. Gold Coast Titans
Games @ Robina (Needs a leagues close to it to get a profit)
2 x QLD Cup teams - Tweed Heads, Burleigh

Melbourne - Victoria and South Australia
15. Melbourne Storm
Games @ Melbourne
1 x NSW Cup Team - Not sure who maybe mounties, even better Buy a club in a Vicky burb and run the team from there

Perth - All of Western Australia
16. West Coast whatevers
Games @ Perth
1 x NSW Cup team

NZ - All of NZ
17. New Zealand Warriors
Games @ Auckland, would take one game to another NZ area every year.
1 x NSW Cup team

PNG - All of PNG
18. PNG Hunters
Games @ PNG, shared between the 2 stadiums
1 x QLD Cup team

1. Souths-St George Dragons
2. Cronulla-Illawarra Sharks
3. Sydney City Tigroostbears
4. South Western Sydney Bulldogs
5. Parramatta Eels
6. Penrith Panthers

13. Brisbane Broncos
14. Gold Coast Titans
15. Melbourne Storm
16. West Coast whatevers
17. New Zealand Warriors
18. PNG Hunters

But Hey it went tribal, logic had no place.

You deserve a gold medal, spot on with your list..:clap:

I agree mostly. I'm not sure about the 3 way merger of Balmain, Norths and Easts.
Balmain should have merged/been taken over by Parra.

Norths and Easts... I have no idea. In an ideal world, Norths and Manly would have gotten along...

They really f**ked up when they allowed the current mergers in 2000.

Potentially there were much better mergers being talked about that never happened;
South Sydney Sharks, Sharks and Souths
Sydney (City) Dragons, Easts and St George
Western Bulldogs, Western Suburbs and Canterbury
Parramatta Tigers, Balmain and Parra.
South Queensland Chargers, Crushers and Gold Coast Chargers
East Coast Tigers, Gold Coast Chargers, Balmain Tigers and Brisbane Easts Tigers (QRL)

And all things being fair the North Sudney Bears would be 16 season into being based on the Central Coast

The name might need some work, I would hate for my club to get confused with the AFL

I could maybe go with that..no speed humps.

Willow calls Cronulla a speed hump, they way they split stuff, he has a point, like Canterbury is a speed hump between Balmain and Wests.

A TigerEel may have worked.

But an central city club Parra does not need that help.

I simply argue the councils all share borders. Then comes Souths - St George, Parra, and Manly-Gosford

Just an opinion.

a merger is a new club and the premierships start at 0. it's just one reason a merger sux. a club is better off relocating. at least that way they can keep their mascot name and colours and continue their records/history and traditions. the club would also pick up a new market where they relocate too and would keep some old fans in sydney who would support them at away games in sydney

"western suburbs bulldogs" would have been the best/fairest name possible if they merged/formed a joint venture

Surely in a truly national league you'd need to call them western Sydney Bulldogs? Western suburbs could be any city in Australia or NZ!

i'm pretty sure anyone following the nrl would know it would mean western suburbs of sydney. in the interest of fairness, both clubs would have a part of their name in the new name, but that's the problem with joint ventures or mergers. one side gets ripped off and it's just a mess. relocations are a better idea

But it just reinforce the nswrl mentality of it being a Sydney comp with teams bolted on. Surely the point of a fully national league is to move away from that mentality? A new person in Darwin should be able to figure out where the club is from just by seeing their name.

And if we're using the A League as a hypothetical model, then surely, there'd be no carry over of nicknames, logos or colours.

Every single team would have new colours with absolutely no links to the past.

usually i'd agree, but how can you have a joint venture with only one of the clubs represented in the name??? that would be far worse than what you are saying
