Eels

Parramatta has recruited some big names this off-season, but Mitch Cornish has managed to fly under the radar.

The 22-year-old joined from Canberra and is keen to get stuck in with his new Eels teammates.

“We have recruited a few big names and I am looking forward to doing a bit with the new guys Kieran Foran and Mick Gordon, along with Nathan Peats and Corey Norman here who I am excited to work with,” Cornish told the Eels website.

“They are both two experienced halves and I will definitely take as much as I can from them.”

Cameron King has also flown south to join the Eels.

He comes from North Queensland, and is intent on earning a spot in first grade.

“I don’t like to look too far ahead. Obviously being at a new club you want to come and impress and show the boys and the staff that you are going to work hard and do your best for the team,” King said.

“I have six weeks or so before Christmas to rip in and get to know everyone and do some hard work together.”

Latest: Rabbitohs' Dylan Walker faces sack, poised for Manly move http://bit.ly/1HKW0Hi #NRL #rugbyleague

So the Souths / Burgess solution is to "sack" Walker so they don't have to pay part of his salary ? Didn't see that coming not.

It's not that easy to sack someone in Australia. I'd say media will call it a sacking (just like we sacked Brian Smith after choosing not to renew him) and walker will be paid a severance package possibly less than 80k to not count under the salary cap (or mulitpes over a couple of years) which will allow him to sign an upgraded deal with other clubs rememberinghis salary would have been low considering he was not a rep player when he signed it.

Walker can help turn us into a top 4 side, holding out in the hope Hayne comes back is madness. He is on the market and we have the money and the need for another quality centre. Time to move on, I'm sure BA has.

my info is that Walker wants too much and is no longer an option at the moment, I also hear he's done and dusted at Manly, we're sitting back to see what pans out in the next month or 2 as players become available all the time...good move in my opinion.

Gutho is apparently killing it at training and is a big chance for right centre at this early in the piece.

He signed an NRL contract which requires him to uphold certain standards. If he has confessed to taking those prescription painkillers (aka hillbilly heroin) in a recreational fashion then he's f**ked.

In my opinion, he is the best signing we have made by far. Top quality combined with value salary on the books.

Foran is good quality, but we are definitely paying too much on the cap and don't sart me on Watmough and Scott. At this stage of their careers they both should not be on anything more then $400k. But sure we needed to pay overs...bullshit!

So who should we have signed instead ? Or would you rather us just save the cap space?

As stagger said we still have enough for another signing so it's not like signing watmough / scott has f**ked our cap.

Or one massive player who is just training in the US. If he doesn't receive anymore game time and another club does not pick him up there is no way he will do this practice squad shit for another year. We could even get him before June 30 for the remainder of 2016 and then give him what he is worth for 2017. Hayne will only play with us.

IMO we only needed 1 of Scott or Watmough... and both have been signed for a year too long. Choc should've been 3 years absolute tops and Scott for 2016 and 2017 only (pretty sure he signed for 3 years didn't he?).

I understand the philosophy behind signing blokes of this calibre - to bring a harder edge and winning attitude to some of our younger blokes but I think the presence of one of them alone should have done the job. We certainly better hope that the change of scenery is what Scott needed to turn his form around, he plodded for most of 2015 when in a Knights jersey...

If a miracle were to occur and somehow we got Hayne for 2016, what do you reckon our premiership chances would be?

I reckon we would be close to one of the favourites for 2016 in the betting markets.

Knights were terrible last year and so of course Scott wasn't at his best but the few games I saw he was still pretty good defensively and was pretty good for NSW. Also defence wins games and as good as Moeroa / Edwards are ( probably without Scott they are the next two options for the right edge ) they are pretty average in defence.

Both will be great for us in 2016 I reckon.

Let's wait and see if either is still here in 2018.

Is he up against Morgan at training ?

Hope you are right mate. Imagine Hayne playing with the squad we now have, we'd be real premiership contenders.

And how do you know that they aren't on $400k or less towards the cap? Given that we gave Watmough an extra year he would have come for less per year, I'm sure he would much rather $400k over 4 years here which equates to $1.6 million rather than $500k over 3 years which only equates to $1.5 million. We get him for $100k less but in the end he gets $100k more, simple. Everyone knows why Scott came down to Sydney, I have no doubts that we haven't paid much for a current Origin quality second-rower.

WAlker would always demand overs-Lafai would be a better option.

Also who says Scott is on more then 400k? I reckon suggestions Gordon is on 300k is overs as well. At Gordons age we are one of the few clubs who wanted him so doubt his price would be huge.
And with Scott we where not short of second rowers so why would we pay overs in an area that we had quite good coverage?

Foran i can understand. We need a dominant half and hopefully we now have one.
