Cowboys are in to building houses at a cheap rate for their players that can play. Its all about the money.

Exactly. Very generous developer board members.
I read elsewhere that Cowboys have denied he has re-signed.
Throw the following into the equation...
Roosters, Dragons and Souths have all tabled 3 year offers not 4 as reported.

That could be on the money. 2 years and a house V's a 3 year deal is easier to say yes to than 2 years V's 4 years..................still wouldn't be surprised to see him in tri colours next season though.

I don't agree; I think it becomes all about the money when a club has nothing else to offer.

I was up north last weekend and the family really wanted to experience Suncorp Stadium, so we attended Broncs v Knights game. WHAT A STADIUM!!!

Despite my passion for the Red V, I couldn't help but think that, if I was an elite player, I would be so, so tempted to play for Broncs for less money than other (especially weaker) clubs, especially for:

1. Home games at a wonderful facility in a one team city;
2. Superior coach;
3. Very talented team mates vying for a premiership (yes, this can be cyclical but you can't keep a well managed club down for long);
4. Pleasant lifestyle.

So it's not ALL about money.

If I can use a work related analogy - I would strongly consider a role with a top tier firm (currently mid tier) for less money and reduced conditions (hours etc) but which offers prestige and more diverse opportunities. I'm sure most people on this forum have similar experiences when it comes to role v money.

And that's one factor why our club is in such a parlous state. We need to pay overs (or at least more than, say, the Broncs).

Definitely not interested in coming to us
]LACHLAN Coote will decide in the next 48 hours whether to stay with the Cowboys for less money or sign a mega-rich deal with the Sydney Roosters.

Coote is only interested in signing with either North Queensland or Sydney and the Cowboys have come back from the dead to be favourites for his signature. The brave fullback is in career-best form and is poised to make a career-defining decision before the weekend.

St George Illawarra are now out of the hunt for Coote, while Souths are outsiders despite offering him the chance to play fullback in place of Greg Inglis, who will be moved to centre next year.

The Roosters are the only club Coote is considering leaving Townsville for at the moment.

The Cowboys spoke extensively with Coote’s manager Mark Stewart over the past two days and all parties want to come to a decision over the weekend.

Coote’s decision could come as early as Thursday

North Queensland officials are confident they have offered Coote enough reasons to stay in Townsville. They have been flexible in negotiations for their star custodian but do want an answer soon.

They will get it this weekend, with the Cowboys facing Parramatta on Saturday night and Coote not wanting the issue to drag into another round.

What the Cowboys can provide is arguably the NRL’s most talented roster and a chance at multiple premierships.

It is understood that Coote has ruled the Dragons out because he does not see them contending for a premiership in the near future. He also wants to earn representative jerseys, a pursuit best served in a winning team

While the Roosters are performing poorly this year, they have the young talent and cap space to rebound as a top four team next season.

The Roosters have offered Coote security with a four year deal worth more than the Cowboys’ offer.

Coote saidlast month he would have to take a cut to stay in Townsville.

“I’ll weigh it up with the family, see what it all is and weigh up whether I come down to Sydney or stay,’’ he said. “It is business though. It is not personal, this is what happens these days.”

If Coote leaves, the Cowboys would have to go to the market for a fullback unless they moved Michael Morgan back to the position next season. Teen sensation Kalyn Ponga may not be ready for the NRL next season given that he only turned 18 last month.

Seems we're insisting on keeping Dugan at FB, hence the notion that Coote would be 5/8 for us.

Can understand his reluctance to join us as a half, given the struggles Marshall and Widdop have had playing in our structure. Don't think he liked his chances of actually increasing his worth playing for us.

He is a perfect fit for the Cows as they stand today. Win another comp, get a rep jersey and sign your final contract at 28. Seems like a reasonable strategy.

Absolutely ,he has the chance to set himself and family up for life financially,as you said a move to us would be like pulling on the handbrake ,he pretty much said that in the article above.

The worrying thing is that his view on coming to the Dragons is probably the way most potential recruits see it and will take a while to change that now.

In general, players change clubs for 3 reasons:

1. Money
2. Chance to win a comp
3. Chance to play under a specific coach (and hence develop their game)

Unfortunately, we rank poorly in points 2 and 3, which then puts pressure on 1 (meaning we have to pay overs to lure talent).

Kinda like our situation now. Big chunk of our cap is spent on Dugan, Widdop and Marshall. If they aren't delivering in spades, then its a big problem, as there's not a lot left over for the other 22 guys in the squad. Hence the procession of depth players that continuously appear in our squad.

Add the fact that we transition very few juniors (Aitken being the exception), then there's not a lot we can offer if our big 3 don't fire (which has been the case too often in recent times).

Funny how this has changed....Cowboys told him he could look around for new Club, they have Salary Cap pressure and had a young gun in the wings ready? So now cash has been found, when 3 or 4 Clubs want him, throwing cash and he is playing best footy as a result!
Id be looking at this young gun? His name escapes me...
