How would you fund an extra 12 or so clubs to the level that they had any hope of being competitive if they got promotion?
extra games means the nrl get more money from rights deals

Maybe two competitions, fixed leagues but potential for championship team to go up if and when premiership is expanded or a club in there fails. Premiership clubs would have a reserve grade, scrap the Under20's. Teams chosen initially to expand the game and deal with NSW over crowding that is stunting growth of game and based on fanbase of existing clubs This would give 10 NSW, 3 NZ , 5 Qlnd Clubs, 1 PNG, 1 WA, 1 Vic, 1 ACT, 1 SA. 20 game comp with a Challenge Cup knock out comp featuring both divisions and a club Nines featuring both
NRL Premiership
Auckland Warriors
Wellington Orcas
West Coast Pirates
Melbourne Storm
Canberra Raiders
South Sydney Rabbitohs
Newcastle Knights
Canterbury Bulldogs
Parramatta Eels
Brisbane Broncos
Gold Coast Titans
NQ Cowboys
NRL Championship
Wests Tigers
Cronulla Sharks
Sydney Roosters
Penrith Panthers
Central Coast Bears
Brisbane Bombers
CQ Bulls
PNG Hunters
Christchurch Hawks
Darwin Crocs
St George Dragons
Adelaide Rams
You could substitute Raiders for another Sydney club if 4 were felt to be needed.
the clubs in the lower comp would be less supported. if they have a better chance of going up to the top comp (by having a promotion/relegation system), they would be more supported

Clubs like the Bears and Newtown would welcome back legions for fans
Qld Cup sides would also
I am not so sure about Western Sydney 2nd division teams or Wyong though
They dont have a big supporter base. More like a local few hundred who enjoy a beer down the road on a Sunday afternoon
Wenty or Mounties would probably eat into Parras fan base
Newtown, Wyong, Wentworthville, and Mounties wouldn't be a part of it. They would stay in a NSW comp. Bears would come back as NSW Central Coast Bears. I love the idea of a promotion/relegation system. The NRL will have it's own network on Foxtel soon. They could show the NRL Division 1 games live on that, and the NRL Division 2 games could be shown live on a second NRL Network channel, or just on one of the Fox Sports channels. 2 comps of 12 teams. Top 6 of each comp make the Finals (Finals system similar to what we have now, but without Week 1 of the Finals). Bottom 2 teams in NRL Division 1 are relegated. The 2 teams that make the NRL Division 2 Grand Final are promoted to NRL Division 1. A problem with it though is probably not enough good talent for 24 teams.
The Nrl can still be split with 20 teams which is a more reasonable short to medium term goal.
One of the positive of promotion and relegation is the talent is relative to the division. So you can probably get away with a lack of player depth in the second division. Its also a case of supply and demand. I have no doubt if the NRL and 24 teams over 2 divisions Union would struggle to get a look in and it would probably take some athletes off the AFL aswell.
Yeah but if the clubs in both divisions have the same salary cap, it doesn't really work too well if there isn't enough talent.
that's true. so i'd have the current nrl teams plus perth, adelaide, nsw central coast bears, Brisbane 2
the 4 new teams would be in nrl division 2 (with 6 clubs from the current nrl)
every team could play each other twice (18 rounds), top 4 finals. there would be plenty of time for rep games/internationals after the season
Disagree slightly on the teams for 17-20. Yes Perth, central coast, Brisbane/south Queensland but no to Adelaide. It would be more important to allow the additional pathways to the Nrl settle in the 4 areas above to create a larger player pool for further expansion. imo specifically Adelaide would be side 23 or 24 if ever.
so who would you have as the 20th side???

they are already in the nrl though. that's just some current clubs playing some home games in different areasCronulla 6 games in Adelaide
Easts 6 games in Wellington
Parramatta 2 games Darwin
Dogs 2 games Christchurch
Melbourne 2 games in Hobart/Launceston
The should get some sort of prize money from the NRL for being promoted. Look at the EPL Lecsteir City won the Comp and look at the differnece between them and the elite clubs. The whole purpose of a 2nd division is giving teams a chance to have a go at the big time, bring in more fans and interest. Imagine if we had a 2nd Div in last year the hype around the Ipswich jets was huge and think if they where promoted for the this year and the Knights were dropped. Would it really be that bad, no it wouldn't. The NRL would have its 2nd brissy side with th local community of Ipswich going nuts. The Knights would be able to grow again in a league more suited to there development. More regions like central & NQLD would have shit load more interest I. Their sides if it was possible for promotion. This is how the NRL could become bigger then the fumble ball game. How do you think clubs in div 2 will raise revenue of around $10million to have any hope of surviving promotion?
I would think the top Div would get bigger grants. More incentive for the 2nd Div teams to perform and promoteI thought when we were talking about have 2 divisions, that the clubs in both divisions would be getting the same amount in NRL grants.
