Just like our club with the salary cap incident, Norman got caught doing what dozens of players do every week. Getting caught for shit like that is inexcusable.

I don't think hineyrulz is exaggerating the level of the 'crime' committed by Norman when he says he "has a lot to make up for" but rather that even though he only 'had a tablet' as you put it, his behaviour did result in us losing his services for a third of the season. That third of a season is a lot to make up for.

I still dont get the inconsistency with the NRL. Norman gets caught with a pinga. No actual drugs in his system. 20 players test positive after last years Mad Monday.

Punishment? Norman gets 8 weeks. 20 players get education on rec drugs.

Thanks, that's obvious. My point is that the NRL treat the 20 players with a recreational drug stance. Educate them regarding the risks etc. Another player gets caught under different circumstances, yet the story is still about players and their use of recreational drugs.

The NRLs policy is either zero tolerance to rec drugs or tolerance with education. You can't be both.

The Norman matter is inconsistent with policy. A knee jerk reaction to the media hyperbole.

I am not condoning rec drug use and if the NRL want to hit players hard to keep them clean and set an example, go for it. Just dont treat one player different just because he was charged for possession compared to a positive drug test.

In Sydney we now have MDT (Mobile Drug Testing). The drug testing is to detect if you have recently used three common illegal drugs: ecstasy, cannabis and speed (including ice). It is not looking for the actual presence of drugs in the system that may result in impairment, it is looking for users. The punishment varies depending on the amount of drugs in your system (current or past). LINK

Consequences
Drivers caught with drugs in their system will face court, could lose their licence, be fined and end up with a criminal record. For a presence offence detected through an MDT, the court may impose a fine of up to $1,100 and an automatic six month licence disqualification.

Drivers proven to be driving under the influence of illegal or prescription drugs, face fines of up to $2,200 and automatic 12 month licence disqualification for a first offence. These offenders can also be sentenced to up to nine months in prison. Higher penalties apply for second and subsequent offenders.

So hypothetically a player could be caught by the NRL on Wednesday after having ecstasy on Mad Monday which would result in counselling. His backrower mate could get caught by MDT and detect the same drugs, yet be charged and fined like Corey.

The 8 week suspension that was handed down no doubt disadvantaged the team. So in a way you are right, the end result was that he let his team down. The 8 weeks suspension however was OTT and mostly Todd was ensuring that we don't make the semis.

I also think his punishment was over the top, but it still doesn't mean he wasn't behaving like an absolute f**king idiot and deserved some time off. He only got 8 weeks thanks to Uncle Nicks whinging over Pearces punishment.

What on earth does MDT have to do with it? If a player gets done driving under the influence of drugs, he'll get suspended. MDT is applied to people driving a motor vehicle, Were the Mad Monday chaps tested while driving a motor vehicle? I guess not.

I repeat...one player was found to have broken the law, and the incident happened in the company of a bunch of complete toerags, It's not a good look. The only comparable incident recently was Loko / Meehan case, and Loko was cut by the Dogs (and hence was no longer an NRL player) and to the best of my knowledge has not sought registration.

We can argue about whether Norman deserved X weeks (I think 8 was a bit OTT), but his case is quite different to those where the NRL simply detect the presence of rec drugs in a private test.

Perhaps you should re-read what I posted. My post established that having historical traces of drugs in your system is now a criminal offence in NSW.

So the NRL somehow differentiate between drug use (not getting caught by the cops) and drug use (caught by the cops) however the reality is that in both instances the player has broken the law nonetheless. The NRL's approach to the two however is chalk and cheese.
