I watched wrestling when i was 5. So adults actually watch it to?
I was being sarcastic. Wrestling is for Americans and kids.
There's no way any of you merkins will convince me that wrestling is fake!!
I'm normally the one writing dumb unrelated shit but seeing as everyone else is doing it in this thread, I'm going to answer the question.
All of the suggestions by Fagan, McCallum and Gurr have merit to be honest. Anything that gives defences a bit more comfort that they aren't going to be completely steam rolled if they don't wrestle is a good thing.
McCallums is an easy one - just go back to a 5m rule.
Gurr's 'no lifting' could work but is a bit more complicated and adds another thing that refs have to worry about. There are some instances where a collision and tackle will force a player off the ground so it would be difficult at times to determine whether someone is actually lifting.
Fagan's 'markers not being square' could also work but equally it could be exploited by defences hanging around in the ruck and getting in the way. At least being square is something that is measurable.
Difficult one. I'm not sure a perfect solution exists but clearly the wrestle was much less of an issue under the 5m rule and that seems like the best way getting some balance back in the ruck.
Decreasing the time allowed for defenders to release and or clear the ruck would decrease the wrestle. To take something from wrestling a simple three count after the call of held and if the defenders aren't clear it's a penalty.[/U][/I][/B]
Otherwise calling off side players out of play for the entire play ( rather than being able to rejoin the line after retiring ten ) might work to disadvantage sides that commit large numbers to the tackle. As it is you can have two or three players caught in no mans land between the markers and the defensive line who can simply follow the ball carrier, and join the next tackle, whilst conceding ten, that allows easy numbers into the next tackle. win that wrestle and you halt momentum, It could get confusing in plays where the ball is moved around a bit but that could be solved by a pass count or something, say two or three passes by the attack and those players that have retired the ten are no longer out of play.
Anything that increases the number of offside defenders on a play adds to the problem IMO. You get annoying f**kwits like Robbie Farah playing for the penalty every time. Plus ultra competitive defenders determined to get back onside to stay in the play but not knowing if they are offside until they attempt the tackle. It's all far too sloppy and open to interpretation. You know what? That sounds like the simplest and most workable solution of them all.
