I'm getting close but I'm still thinking it's not a standout year.
Nothing on the level of my previous favourites like King Goat, Vektor, Wilderun, etc

I kinda agree- for me there’s been that one standout classic album and then a bunch that are just really good solid releases without being totally jaw dropping.

If anyone's wondering where to dive into 2017 metal...

I'm sure I've given them a plug earlier but I quite like the website AngryMetalGuy for reviews and annual top 10s.

The website's 22 writers nominated 204 albums between them in their end of 2017 lists.
So here's a cumulative ranked list of every one that got a mention. Basically allocated 1-10 points for a ranked mention and a fraction for an honorable mention.

Was his criteria bands with less than 200k Facebook likes who can only sell out 200 person venues?

Lol Facebook likes matter as any sort of metric now? And I've seen several of those bands in the last year or so and significantly more than 200 people there every time

I would know. I am kind of a big deal in the scene

Hardcore_Fan? Never heard of the bloke

But seriously this is a critics best of year list, if these things we’re just full of albums we already knew about they’d be pretty worthless, the whole reason you read them is to discover new stuff that’s under the radar

So who’s going to parkway this weekend???? The greatest Australian band of all time and the biggest modern day Australian band.

I’m going only because I think ‘Horizons’ is actually a really good album and I want to hear it played in it’s entirety.

Shame everything since that they’ve released has been a steaming pile of shit.

Interested to hear Machine Heads new album dropped next week. Apparently it’s a return to the ‘nu-metal’ phase they went through with The Burning Red & Supercharger. TBR was still a killer album IMO. I thought their last album was their worst so not a surprise they’ve tried something different, as the last 3 were all very similar.

They have had their ups and down havent they.

First 2 albums amazing, next 2 utter shit, then they came storming back with ‘through the ashes of empires’ which is one of my favourite albums of all time. Everything since has been rubbish bar maybe Bloodstones and Diamonds (I absolutley hate the Blackening which I know goes against the grain but to me they are not a prog band and they tried to be one on that album). And the locust thing.....FMD

I still love the Slayer VHS/DVD from 1995 (Live Intrusion) where Tom and Kerry get Robb and Christ Kontos up to do a Venom cover. Was about the first time I had heard MH and I went out and got Burn My Eyes not long after and loved them.

The only song I have heard from the new album sounds like a Strapping Young Lad song, I saw Devin Townsend called them out on it too..........
