My question is what drives this shit? I am a hardened cynic and search for supporting evidence to accompany anything I read. My bullshit detector typically goes off at regular intervals.

Some of the crap about Trump and crap about Hillary is just that - unsubstantiated crap. Yet there is a plethora of gullible people willing to believe it and passionately defend their side of politics like their lives depend on it.

It seems to have gotten worse in recent times. Some of the crazy stuff that gets thrown around is f**ken ridiculous.

Why is it happening on the scale that it is now? Are people genuinely that stupid or are they such passionate supporters of their cause that they are willing to ignore logic.

Or has it always been occurring but hidden from normal people such as myself until internet blogs, social media etc created a more visible platform for this sort of shit?

IIRC Hitler first coined the phrase Lgenpresse (sp) when he accused the press of inventing stories (which were really true). Agreed that the use of the term fake news is clever. As was "alternative facts".

From a media perspective I think it's a lot to do with the fact that media is a business now and every organisation takes one side or the other. They are selling a product to an eager audience rather than reporting the news.

So people get whipped into a fervor by reporting that extends their existing biases, and then they dribble shit all over the internet with more people reinforcing their increasingly hardcore and extreme views. Then they increasingly only hang out with folks they align with politically and it all just compounds itself on and on...

Do you think it is worse now because Trump has given a reason to the redneck population and anyone who is racist or wants to have automatic assault rifles etc. that they will get what they want and completely rid their country of the illegal immigrants and African Americans (probably by using their automatic weapons to achieve it) so they are even more behind him because they got him in?

And the opposite are the people who he scares the living shit out of because he may just get what he wants so they push back the other way just as aggressively because they feel it is the last hope for the country?
