Passing of Nev Hornery

Sad to hear of the passing of Nev Hornery in Cairns. One of the toughest but most talented players ever to lace on a boot.

Having played for Wests and Canterbury in Sydney and earned a reputation as a madman, Hornery came to Wynnum in 1973 and played for four seasons, punctuated by many injuries. Noel Kelly who played with him at Wests described him as playing a 16 stone game in a 10 stone body.

He had ball skills to match Lewis or Thurston and could put players through gaps with his eyes shut. Hornery played one Rep match for Brisbane v England in 1975. It turned into a bloodbath with Hornery stirring up a tough Pommy forward pack. Brisbane won 21-10.

Hornery had a few off field troubles at times generally involving pubs and fights. He went to Swifts in the Ipswich comp after his Wynnum days.

Recall him getting sent off and getting a very long suspension for going completely medieval in a scrum playing for Wests Magpies. It seems he was aptly named.

NIne weeks I believe.

You can win a lot of bets on him never being sent off in Brisbane, everyone thinks it happened frequently. He got replaced a lot of times when on a final warning.

Hornery would have been sensational with the interchange system, he was the ultimate impact player.

Yes, from memory was in the 2nd row and throwing multiple uppercuts in between his hooker and prop into the face of the opposing hooker. Deadest mad....but good memories, different era.
