St George Illawarra left edge set for flying finish to NRL season
Dragons Den News
r0_0_3000_1920_w1200_h678_fmax.jpg

Take off: Nene Macdonald. Picture: AAP Image/Daniel Pockett.

After making his name as a prolific right winger, Nene Macdonald made the move to the left flank ahead of the 2018 NRL season.

It’s a transition the Dragons flyer admits hasn’t been easy, but now with eight games remaining in the season, Macdonald is ready to take off in the run to the finals.

“We’re looking to finishing off the season really well,” Macdonald said. “We started off a little bit rusty on the left edge, but now we’ve really gelled.

“I was playing on the right last year with Euan [Aitken], now I’m on the left with Lafs [centre Tim Lafai] and he’s been really really good for me. Me, him and Gaz [Gareth Widdop] are forming a really good combination.

“With Goat [Joel Thompson] leaving and Tariq [Sims] coming in, we’ve formed a really good combination. Obviously Tariq was out last week and I’m so stoked for him playing NSW, getting us all back together we’re going to finish off a good year.”

Often maligned as a boring and predictable attacking side, the Dragons put 30 points on the Melbourne Storm in Thursday night’s loss and pulled out a number of new plays in the process.

The most impressive being Luciano Leilua’s try following an inside ball from Lafai. The move caught the Storm defenders sliding in preparation for a Matt Dufty sweep play and allowed Leilua to stroll through untouched.

Macdonald said it’s just one of numerous moves the Dragons have been practicing on the training paddock.

“I think that’s been a really good play we’ve been practicing at training. I reckon Tariq was at home watching and he’d be burning because that would have been his ball if he was playing, so he’s missed out on one there.

“I think it’s a really good play for us, early ball for Tim’s going really well, it gives him time to play, he’s got a good little flick pass and he can pass on the inside as well.”

Macdonald himself has scored nine tries this season, with numerous, including one on Thursday, seeing him spectacularly ground the ball while airborne.

“I do practice a few at training just mucking around, but I never think it’s going to get that close during the game. This last game’s try, I’ve been copping it from everyone, ‘How’d you do it?”

“There’s kids today screaming ‘How’d you do it?’ I just say I’ve been practicing. So they say they’ll go to training tonight and that they are going to do it. It’s a bit of instinct and just growing up practicing it and it came off, it’s a pretty good feeling.”

While the Dragons have been maligned for their attack in recent seasons, it has been hard to fault their defence in recent years. Thursday emerged in stark contrast, with a number of defensive lapses costing the side in the final 15 minutes.

Macdonald said the side took great confidence from Thursday’s impressive attacking display, but they know they must improve their defence against the Wests Tigers on Sunday afternoon.

“We take confidence coming out of that match in our attack. We knew we could score tries every time we got down there and we did every time.

“Our defensive lapses let us down and they got through us a few times and scored a few more than us.”

Monday also saw the announcement that St George Illawarra forward Leeson Ah Mau will leave the club at the end of the season to join the Warriors.

St George Illawarra Dragons v Wests Tigers at 4.10pm, Jubilee Oval

Dragons mail: Young forward Jacob Host is out injured (shoulder) but the club will be hoping to get all their Origin representatives back. That’s Ben Hunt, Jack de Belin, Tyson Frizell, Paul Vaughan, and Tariq Sims. Coach Paul McGregor will be desperately hoping the inclusion of his stars is enough to turnaround last week’s result.

Tigers mail: Ben Matulino was a late withdrawal from their last game but he should return this week to start at prop.

MATCH PREVIEW

Dragons v Wests Tigers: Round 18 preview

Both these sides are coming off losses but it's fair to say the stuttering Tigers have greater cause for concern than the second-placed Dragons.

After winning seven of their first 12 games, including a pair of victories over the highly fancied Melbourne Storm, Ivan Cleary's men have hit the wall big time. They've now lost four on the trot to the Titans, Raiders, Sharks and Roosters, all but ending their hopes of playing finals.

The return of favourite son Robbie Farah and the acquisition of Moses Mbye was meant to deliver a morale-boosting win in front of the Leichhardt faithful in round 16. The reality was a disastrous 30-12 loss and another blow to a side which had created so many good headlines in the opening two months of the season.

The Dragons managed to score 30 points in Melbourne with their Origin stars missing and could take plenty of positives from a game which got away from them late as Cam Smith took charge.

Venue: Jubilee Oval

Match broadcasters:

  • Nine Network
  • Fox League
  • LIVE PASS
Buy Tickets
Key match-up: Robbie Farah will be better for the run at Leichhardt and he'll be able to focus solely on footy when he heads to Jubilee. His battle with Dragons rake Cameron McInnes should be an absolute beauty. Both are dangerous out of dummy half and both will get through a power of work in defence.

For the Dragons to win: They may have been undermanned at AAMI Park but there's no hiding the fact they leaked 52 points. That's more than the combined total they conceded in their previous matches against the Eels, Sea Eagles and Bulldogs. If the Red V tighten the ruck and muscle up they can force the Tigers into error and squeeze the life out of them.

For the Tigers to win: Get back to what was working for them before this four-match losing run began. Stop trying to score off every play and come up with the miracle plays. The Tigers need Luke Brooks and Farah to control the tempo, kick deep and crank up the defensive heat on a Dragons side which could feel the pinch late with so many backing up from Origin.

Dragons Stat Attack: The Red V are yet to lose a home game in 2018. Whether in Wollongong or Kogarah, Paul McGregor's men have defended their turf with pride and passion.

Tigers Stat Attack: The Tigers haven't played finals footy since 2011. Their best finish in that time was ninth in 2016 but the heady days of 2010-11 seem a distant memory now. If they're to have any hope of making up the six-point gap between themselves and the eighth-placed Warriors they need to beat the top two sides (Dragons and Rabbitohs) in the next two games.

And another thing: Back in 2010-11, when the Wests Tigers were a finals force to be reckoned with, these two side played a couple of epic matches in September. In 2010, the Red V squeaked past the Tigers 13-12 in the preliminary final before going on to win the title. A year later the Tigers got a measure of revenge with a 21-12 win in a qualifying final before being knocked out by the Warriors in an epic semi-final.

St George Illawarra Dragons v Wests Tigers, Sunday 4.10pm at Jubilee Oval

Head-to-head: Played 34; Dragons 19 wins, Wests Tigers 15 wins
Previous result: Dragons won 16-12 in round 13, 2017
Points per game: Dragons 25.0; Wests Tigers 15.1
Points conceded per game: Dragons 17.9; Wests Tigers 18.4
Televised: Live on Nine, Fox League

Petero Civoniceva's prediction: The Dragons will be keen to bounce back after the heavy Melbourne defeat, and in front of their loyal fans at Kogarah should be too hard to stop. The Tigers may provide some resistance, but I can't see them maintaining it for 80 minutes. Tip: Dragons by 8

One of the funniest things I’ve read recently within these pages is the claim that McGregor is a contender for Coach Of The Year.

Hopefully the above named side named against the Tigers will put this ludicrous belief to bed once and for all.

He needs to go.

I’m tipping:
We beat Tigers well at Kogarah, overcome a deficit of 7 points Souffs have on us atm and regain 1st.
Nighty wont play.
Lawrie will be 4th forward on the bench.
Packer will lift.
McInnes will have a blinder.

I’m willing to wait till the actual teams run out. Hard to believe Mann drops back to bench surely?

Another scenario is that Nighty drops out altogether (due to his shoulder injury) and Herbert comes in on the wing to start.
I saw that Mann was on the bench via a tweet before I saw the full list, and was seized but a strong conviction thatHerbert would be on the wing. Actually exclaimed Goddamnit! Seeing nighty there. Here’s hoping that happens.

I don't think that Mann deserves to be dropped back to the bench. He scored 2 tries last week and another one since being promoted to starting wing. That is 2 tries more than Nightingale scored in about 13 or 14 games. Maybe Mary will have Herbert on the bench? Maybe Mary will start with Herbert?

I have got Mann in my supercoach team. He scored around 70 last week, so if he continues to play 80 minutes, then he should have a couple of price rises over the next couple of weeks.
