yla Hepi has signed a new deal with Toulouse for the 2019 season.

The 25-year-old front-rower was the second most used player by Sylvain Houles in 2018, playing 29 games in the Championship season, only being behind France international Mark Kheirallah.

Hepi had a stint in Super League with Hull Kingston Rovers between 2011 and 2013, while enjoying a loan spell at Gloucestershire All Golds in that time.

He moved to Whitehaven in 2015, where he impressed and caught the eye of Toulouse, where he has gone on to make 81 appearances for the French club.

On his new deal, Hepi said: “I am very excited about the season ahead.

“This is a pivotal year for Toulouse and for French rugby league in general.

“From a personal standpoint, I am eager to get into the preparation and regain the ground to work hard for the team.

“It’s very nice to be in a group focused on its target and pushing us in the same direction to reach it.”

Olympique chairman Bernard Sarrazain commented: “Tyla is such an effective player.

“I prefer to have him with us – 100% – rather than against us.”

Typical France might want to keep that record going.

Disappointed in a way that Bergal and Dezaria couldnt continue with an English team. Excited to see how Springer goes for Toronto though.

T
he French Rugby League Federation have called off all fixtures on the same day of Catalans’ clash with Wigan in Barcelona.

Nou Camp will host a rugby league match for the very first time on Saturday, May 18 (3:30pm UK time).

Challenge Cup holders Catalans were formally invited to play at the Camp Nou by Barcelona and they will face current Super League champions Wigan.

The FRLF have postponed every single one of the games, so supporters and players will be able to attend the historic fixture between Catalans and Wigan at FC Barcelona’s Nou Camp.

FC Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu: “Barça are very pleased to host this Super League game between the reigning champions of the two biggest rugby league competitions in Europe.

“This will be a grand game between two great teams, and I’m sure there will be a party atmosphere at the Camp Nou.

“I encourage the Dragons supporters to treat our stadium like their home and for Wigan and Barça fans to also share the experience of seeing rugby league played at the Camp Nou.

“Two seasons ago, our stadium hosted the final of French rugby union’s Top 14 between Toulon and Racing 92 and it was watched by 99,000 people. It was an amazing atmosphere that we hope to see repeated on May 18.

Rich backer ditches union for Catalans

One of the richest men in France has turned his attention to rugby league by announcing an historic sponsorship deal with Catalans Dragons, report League Express.

Mohed Altrad, the owner of the global construction group Altrad, has entered into an official partnership with the Dragons, bringing a major blue-chip sponsor into Super League and boosting the profile of the game in France. According to League Express, Altrad is a major supporter of rugby union and his decision to invest in the Dragons follows on from the recent acquisition of another sponsor from the 15-aside code, Bpifrance, who recently ditched Perpignan’s union side to support the Dragons.

Let’s hope that this is the beginning of new investment into French RL and not only with the dragons but Toulouse and elite1. Maybe even potentially new French teams entering into the English structure as well.
