I think it derives from the term "grunt work", because tight forwards colloquially do the grunt work, and grunts are related to pigs.

But I don't really know where it came from.

Souths seem pretty good last season.

Roosters get the job more often than not. So do the Storm.

As I was growing up, 'pigs' simply referred to forwards. Anyone who packed into the scrum....maybe the old lock wasn't quite a pig.

The concept of middle forwards is a 21st century phenomenon.
