The links are not worth a piece of shit if they are not relevant and accurate! You are not comparing like for like! How consistently dumb!

Please explain how they are not relevant and accurate? One of them was from the NRL reporting on participation figures for 2018.

Lol. Meanwhile the AFL dwarfs the NRL in crowds with ten clubs in a city that has less population than Sydney. Go back to school! Think for yourself. And come with thoughtful comments instead of regurgitated vitriol that panders to a sport that is controlled by News ltd. (and News ltd is a smiling assassin -let's get that right for a start)

AFL dwarves pretty much most sports globally, and does so across Australia in comparison to NRL, not just in Melbourne. They are an anomaly. We shouldnt be worried about reaching their heights, but should be aiming to get clubs over 20k which is where clubs could and should be for their own sustainability.

Aim high or underachieve . Depends how you look at it! The concession being for rugbyleague is that it is behind the start from the outset as it doesn't have universal presence in all forms of schooling. All schooling ; be it public, catholic and elite private give AFL a go. This is not the case for rugby league, particularly in NSW and specifically in elite private schooling. This makes a difference to the demographic rugby league attracts. It's an unfair playing field. Some can work this out. Others continue blindly onwards as if it doesn't count. It does count as rugby league has little genuine support at the top end of town (full of elite private school employees) Thank god its a supreme code to watch as it would be absolutely defunct straightaway. Internationally it still hasn't received official recognition as a sport. Go figure. And guess who's objecting to rugby league gaining international status? Rugby union! (dominated by elite private school people)

Union has strong access to this top end of town and is failing miserably. I think you might be over rating the influence it can have on success of a code.

Lol. It's a crap sport! Can't you work that out! It's absolutely doing its bit to.undermine rugby-league! It's better and much more attractive rival code. The big picture is what counts to union. They are making sure rugby-league does not get too big for the boots union want rugby league wear! It's called containment of a code. Let it prosper to a certain level. but definitely not more than that level. Otherwise it (rugby-league ) will grow. And union do not want to see that!

You totally missed my point. Union has a strong presence in posh schools and is travelling very poorly,. We dont need these posh schools for RL to be popular. In the grand list of things we need to change to get more fans to games this is right at the bottom lol.

Nope. You have once again missed the point for genuine rugbyleague progress! It entails all facets of schooling.

Leaving the terriblempff season aside I’d say the game is stronger all around than in the early 90’s. Bigger attendances, bigger tv audiences, a shed load more revenue, higher profile nationally. Once we get expansion sorted out and a stronger footprint we will see the game move up another level.

With 30 years of population growth though shouldn't it be.

It had 7 of the top shows on TV . So maybe not everything.

Thoughtful comments? You know that I didn't write those articles right?

the thinking behind it is that the benefits of expanding to perth or brisbane or NZ outweighs the benefits of keeping around sydney clubs that don't have any growth potential. You can say why not just keep all Sydney teams in the comp and also expand however that's going to be dictated by TV broadcasters and how much money they are willing to pay for additional teams.

Yeah, but where the reality behind this thinking when Perth gets about10k ? Melbourne were shown on tele the other week - twenty years on - and still only 30k. When there is a match involving a Sydney club the ratings are well over 200k + 60% or 70% of the Foxtel number are Sydney subscribers. This sport relies on TV money and the more we have the better of the game will be. So why would we want to get rid of any Sydney Clubs - where is the logic ?????

The NRL's major concern at the moment should be getting FTA coverage on a Saturday. If this involves bringing in extra teams so we can have another team and allowing Murdoch to keep his 5 exclusive games, or whatever the problem is. Than this needs to happen.

Don’t Melbourne get around 400k watching on tv for origin? Unless you get the game on main fta channel you can’t be surprised not many are watching it. Also re tv figures generally, Storm rate as one of the most watched clubs on tv

Where are you getting your fox stats from. I’ve never seen a break down of subscribers. I very much doubt 25% of the population are providing 60% of subscriptions
Most games on fta seem to be pretty consistent ratings with less than 10% variability depending on whose playing.

And for the hard of hearing, there will be no relocation or license moving. Only way nrl can make up the 25% revenue gap with afl is through more teams and more content. If that is a good thing for the competion make up long term is arguable, but for nrl it is all about the KPI of revenue.

Yes, when there watching Origin but usually don't get much than 30k for a club game

And Melbourne have 10 team in a smaller space than Sydney.

The makeup of Fox numbers are listed from time to time. Sydney's population is almost 5m.

Since the Commission took over 7 or 8 years ago the gap has narrowed in most areas. Though as said, the best way of spreading the game is getting it broadcast on FTA of a Saturday.

Yes, And don't they have 10 team in a far smaller space than Sydney.

They do but those teams actually have significantly more fans that support them financially, which helps, a lot! And a variable grant system that means they take from the rich to give to the poor and the likes of st kilda can be bailed out by the afl every year.

Ps just had a quick look and the two highest rating TV games so far are Storm v broncos and broncos v cowboys, which kind of goes against your claim it needs so many Sydney clubs to keep tv ratings up.
