Rumours (signings, sackings & other NRL stuff)

Old school conservatives who think that because that’s how it was done 30 years ago that is how it is to be done today.

They might pride themselves on being “opinion leaders” and “ social influencers” but no serious business person entertains bullying as conducive or appropriate to any modern day work environment.

Based on media reports this year, some radio stations seems to run a “primary school playground” management style.

As listeners become more sophisticated, and hysterical prejudices fade, that model will inevitably collapse.

The other thing would be to place pressure on the advertisers who de facto and indirectly support this bad humour.

Yes I like that ideal world idea where people wise up to this. The problem is I think bullying is rife throughout Australia and who knows where else .. behind closed doors ..so hopefully the sponsors and investors can’t see. And the other thing obviously is money. Unfortunately who makes the money gets off with a slap on the wrist. Look at Eddie McGuire and the AFL as a whole re racism...He says he’s sorry about Goodes after that movie came out .. if it happens again would he do anything different...doubt it.. He wouldn’t have the balls because it’s billion dollar industry.

Some good points.

I can’t understand why people get upset with race things. Just treat everyone the same.

This country is very diverse and multicultural, nrl especially so. We are the much better for it.

Tigers veterans Marshall and Farah keen to play on next year
NO, NO & NO please don't go there. By all means sign them to the West Magpies reserve team. Sign them as coaches/advisors to the 6/7 & 9 but no more.

Wests Tigers veterans Benji Marshall and Robbie Farah are keen to extend their playing careers into next season.

The Herald can reveal the superstar duo have informed the Tigers hierarchy of their desire to play on in 2020, which would be their 18th season in the NRL. The pair are already life members after their contributions to date, but both feel they have more to give to the black, white and gold.

Club officials are poised to meet with the pair to discuss the situation as soon as practicable, as any decision will have salary cap ramifications and impact the number of top-30 spots available to coach Michael Maguire for next year.

It was widely thought Marshall and Farah would retire together at the end of the season in what would be a fitting farewell at their spiritual home of Leichhardt Oval against Cronulla in round 25. That fixture is already slated as the last regular-season game in the career of Sharks veteran Paul Gallen. It may not be a swansong in Marshall and Farah’s cases; they made their debuts in 2003 and it’s understood their preference is to also exit the game together.

While they are in the twilight of their careers - Farah will be 36 next year and Marshall 35 - they remain strong contributors to a side still in finals contention at the halfway point of the season. Farah has played in all but one game this year, while Marshall has shown glimpses of his best in his seven appearances.

The pair were among the NRL’s highest-paid stars in their prime, although the club could secure their services for relatively cut-price deals.

The Tigers have signed teenage Broncos hooker Jake Simpkin, considered one of the best young dummy-halves in the country, as Farah’s long-term replacement. However, Simpkin won’t be ready to start next year in first grade and Farah could help mentor his replacement until he is ready to make the step up. Marshall is also viewed as a pseudo-coach while on the field, his experience invaluable to a side that is about to go through a roster revamp.

Maguire will give serious consideration to keeping the pair on the books, although he is mindful of striking the right balance between retaining seasoned stars and introducing new blood. If Maguire opts not to renew their contracts, they will retire rather than look for a contract with a rival club.

Maguire is keen to overhaul his squad, with several big-name players deemed surplus to requirements. Josh Reynolds, Russell Packer, Chris McQueen and Elijah Taylor are among those being shopped to rivals. Former coach Ivan Cleary and football manager Kelly Egan were responsible for bringing them to Concord and soon the latter will make his own departure from the Tigers.

Maguire and Egan’s replacement will be seeking to free up the salary cap space required to reconfigure the squad. In his pre-game press conference, Maguire said he was keeping his players abreast of developments.

"I’m always talking to our players. They are all aware that they can come and have a chat to me about where we’re at," Maguire said. "We’re all working through things, it’s like any other club, we’re all going through the same thing at some stage.

"We’ll work through it day-by-day and let the players know where we are at. Obviously, people talk about players coming and going but we’ve got a spare spot in our 30. For us, it’s given us the ability to have a little bit of a look around."

Parramatta prop Tim Mannah is poised to switch to the Tigers, although it remains to be seen whether there will be more comings and goings before the June 30 deadline.

Hold off on the champagne and pop the balloons, because Wests Tigers veterans Benji Marshall and Robbie Farah are ready to cancel their retirement party.

The Tigers life members have told the club they are both looking to play on for one final year in 2020, as reported by Fairfax.

The duo both debuted in 2003 and are hoping to exit the game together if possible.

It was widely believed that their farewell match would be against Cronulla at Leichhardt Oval in round 25, when Sharks’ skipper Paul Gallen will also play the last regular-season game of his long career.

But the Tigers will soon meet with the duo to discuss extending their contracts for one final — 18th — NRL season.

Farah is 36, but has only missed one game for the Tigers at the midpoint of the season. Marshall hasn’t made as many appearances, but has impressed in his seven games this year, with the club still in finals contention.

Their desire to play on could have a major impacts the salary cap situation at Concord.

Coach Michael Maguire is looking to completely revamp his squad, shopping around a host of big names including Russell Packer, Elijah Taylor, Josh Reynolds and Chris McQueen.

Eels prop Tim Mannah is set to complete a switch to the Tigers in the coming fortnight, while Mahe Fonua won’t be re-signed for next season as Maguire cleans out a roster inherited from former coach Ivan Cleary.

If Marshall and Farah can be secured for the right price, they offer valuable leadership and mentoring for a squad which could look very different in 2020.

The Tigers have their long-term replacement for Farah in Jake Simpkin, an under-18 Queensland star who could be thrown into the Tigers’ hooker role for next season if Farah is not retained.

But the prospect of Farah mentoring Simpkin until he is ready to take the reins is an appealing one.

If Maguire does choose not to renew the contracts of Marshall and Farah, don’t expect to see them wearing rival jerseys. The Tigers legends will retire rather than play elsewhere.

The Jake Simpkin comment is interesting, this sounds like Liddle is not being looked at anymore?

Last thing we need is for Benji and Robbie to run around again but I get the feeling the club are pushing it to get their cap in better shape for next year

Actually it wouldn’t surprise me if Marshall goes around again seeing Maguire drafted him into the NZ preliminary test squad

Yep i think it’s salary cap related.

A couple of legends for beer money to bolster morale at training.

The odd spell off the bench with 20 to go.

Madge has inherited a mess.
