Dragons fall away to Raiders in Wollongong

Canberra overcame the second half send-off of NSW winger Nick Cotric to leapfrog Sydney Roosters into third place on the NRL ladder after a 36-14 defeat of St George Illawarra at WIN Stadium on Sunday night.

Cotric became the first player sent off since Melbourne’s Curtis Scott was dismissed for punching in round 11 of last season’s Telstra Premiership after a lifting tackle on Dragons centre Tim Lafai midway through the second half.

The Raiders centre was also the first player given his marching orders for a dangerous throw since South Sydney forward Peter Driscoll in 1995, while Canberra prop David Shillington was the previous player sent off before Scott for head-butting Wests Tigers front-rower Aaron Woods in 2015.

It was Cotric’s first match back since suffering a syndesmosis injury in the round-12 match against Cronulla, which sidelined the 20-year-old from Origin II and III after making his Blues debut in the series opener.

Lafai quickly jumped to his feet after landing on his neck but referee Ashley Klein had little hesitation in sending Cotric for an early shower for the 59th-minute tackle.

"I didn't quite see it but I remember my head just spinning," Lafai told Fox Sports in an interview straight after full-time. "It is what it is. It happens in footy, it's all part of the game I guess."

The incident overshadowed an impressive performance by the Raiders, who needed to win by 14 points or more to move ahead of the Roosters after their 15-12 defeat by North Queensland earlier in the day.

The signs were ominous for the Dragons from early on, with Cotric beating four defenders to force his way over for the opening try in the 12th minute.

St George Illawarra appeared set to hit back soon after but winger Mikaele Ravalawa slipped as he received a pass from centre Euan Aitken and Croker bundled him into touch just short of the try line.

Croker then followed up his try saving feats by fending off Aitken to claim a try of his own in the 16th minute and become the greatest try scorer in Raiders history after eclipsing the previous record of 120 tries held by namesake Jason Croker.

Things went from bad to worse for St George Illawarra coach Paul McGregor after veteran prop Jeremy Latimore had to be assisted from the field in the 20th minute with a knee injury and Aitken was forced off for a HIA two minutes later, along with Raiders forward Elliott Whitehead.

Croker appeared set to claim his second try in the 36th minute but was taken high by Ravalawa after the former Canberra under 20s player of the year was wrong-footed by halfback Aidan Sezer.

Ravalawa was placed on report and Raiders lock Joe Tapine forced his way over a try from the ensuing penalty. Croker converted the try before leaving the field for an HIA.

Stuart: People who think it was a spear tackle are new to rugby league

Leading 16-0 at half-time, Canberra piled on two quick tries after the interval through winger Bailey Simonsson and fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad but the Dragons got their way back into the contest when Korbin Sims crashed over in the 50th minute.

Corey Norman’s conversion attempt from next to the posts rebounded off the left-hand upright but the home team had more points three minutes later when the Queensland Origin five-eighth put lock Luciano Leilua over to reduce the deficit to 26-10.

Despite being reduced to 12 men after Cotric’s dismissal, Canberra scored two tries through interchange forward Siliva Havili and Nicoll-Klokstad before St George Illawarra fullback Matt Dufty raced 80 metres to touchdown in the 79th minute.

St George Illawarra's season on the brink after 36-14 Canberra Raiders drubbing

St George Illawarra's season is on the brink after the Dragons suffered a 36-14 loss to Canberra on Sunday night.

It was one of the Dragons' worst performances of the season as they were well beaten by the Raiders who climb above the Sydney Roosters into third on the NRL table.

St George Illawarra's 10th defeat of the campaign saw them slump to 14th place only above struggling Canterbury and the Gold Coast.

While they are only four points out of the top eight it is the number of teams now between them and the semi-finals that is the biggest concern.

On this performance the Dragons are not even close to being a finals team, with the Raiders playing a quarter of the game with only 12 men after Nick Cotric's sending off - with Canberra winning that period 10-4.

While all four of St George Illawarra's State of Origin representatives were able to back up, the quartet could do little to spark the poor Dragons as Canberra went on to score their second biggest ever win over St George Illawarra.

Almost everything that could go wrong for the Dragons did go wrong. Jeremy Latimore was forced off with a twisted knee and Euan Aitken was lost briefly to a head injury assessment.

.@JarrodCroker slices through to become the Raiders' highest ever try scorer #NRLDragonsRaiders 10-nil#TelstraPremiershippic.twitter.com/cOp13FPkt4

Then there was Corey Norman's missed conversion at the start of the second half from almost directly in front of the posts that thudded into the left-hand upright. It summed up St George Illawarra's performance.

A brave 9,000 fans turned up on a cold, windy night in Wollongong to watch Canberra take an early lead through Cotric and Jarrod Croker tries with Croker's effort making him the Raiders' all-time leading try-scorer.

Joseph Tapine's try four minutes before half-time gave Canberra a 16-0 lead at the break and the Dragons staring down the barrel of another deflating defeat.

Bailey Simonsson extended the advantage to 20-0 with a try two minutes into the second half before St George Illawarra finally hit back with tries to Korbin Sims and Luciano Leilua.

But almost immediately, Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad scored for Canberra to reassert their lead.

Electric speed from Matt Dufty :fire: Great chase from CNK #NRLDragonsRaiders 36-14 #TelstraPremiershippic.twitter.com/Y6BvGr8gNU

The game changed just before the hour mark with Cotric's sending off for what was almost an old-fashioned spear tackle. Cotric lifted Tim Lafai awkwardly with the Dragons centre landing on the back of his neck. Cotric was the first player sent off in the NRL this season and the first since Melbourne's Curtis Scott last season.

With Canberra down to 12 men the momentum appeared all with the Dragons. But with 20 minutes to go it was the Raiders who lifted again.

Tries to Siliva Havili and Klokstad's second sealed the result for the under-manned Raiders before Matt Dufty's late consolation for the red V.

With just eight rounds of the regular season remaining, it's possible the Dragons may need to win at least seven of their final eight games just to sneak into the finals.

Captain Gareth Widdop's return from a serious shoulder injury can't come soon enough for the Dragons. The only question is whether or not it will come too late to save their season.

    Leader Scoreboard

Canberra Raiders 36 (Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad two, Nick Cotric, Jarrod Croker, Joseph Tapine, Bailey Simonsson, Siliva Havili tries. Jarrod Croker four goals)

    defeated

St George Illawarra Dragons 14 (Korbin Sims, Luciano Leilua, Matt Dufty tries. Tim Lafai goal)

    at WIN Stadium, Wollongong

    Crowd: 9,159

Leader man of the match: Josh Hodgson (Raiders)

Dragons' next three: Panthers (away), Rabbitohs (away), Eels (home - Kogarah)

NRL 2019: Cotric sent-off as Raiders hammer Dragons

OUCH: A scuffle ensues following Nick Cotric's tackle on Tim Lafai that saw him sent from he field on Sunday night. Picture: NRL Photos

CANBERRA hammered the first nail in St George Illawarra's finals coffin with a 36-14 win over over the Dragons at WIN Stadium on Sunday night.

It looked all too easy for the visitors until Nick Cotric's 59th minute send-off for a nasty looking spear tackle on Tim Lafai midway through the second half briefly threw a spanner in the works.

It was Cotric's first game back from an ankle injury that kept him out of the second two matches of the Origin series, but the first send-off for a dangerous throw since 1995 leaves him facing a much longer stint on the sidelines.

Raiders coach Ricky Stuart was adamant post-match that it should not be the case, promising to fight if the match review panel comes down hard on his centre.

"If you call that a spear then you've only just started watching this game," Stuart said.

"Whoever thinks it's a spear tackle doesn't know the game of rugby league. It was unintentional, it got away on him a little but and I understand that, that's an accident.

"[Lafai] played on, Nick's got no malice in him at all, he's a strong kid and it's got away on him and it ended up, I believe, with him on the wrong end of it in regards to being sent off."

It's a headache for Stuart but its nothing compared to those of Dragons counterpart Paul McGregor, following his side's eighth loss in 10 outings.

The home side never really looked in the contest, trailing 16-0 at the break after making six errors and missing a staggering 30 tackles to just nine for the visitors.

Four-pointers to Bailey Simmonson and Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad in the opening five minutes of the second stanza effectively putting the match to bed.

Even the Dragons first response, a try to Korbin Sims, quickly turned sour when Corey Norman to inexplicably cannoned the conversion attempt into the upright from virtually in front of the posts.

It summed up their night and a performance McGregor couldn't have sugar-coated if he tried - which he didn't.

"I'm not going to defend that performance at all, it was the worst performance of the season," McGregor said.

"There's no excuse. We've had our distractions this year but we had enough talent on the field today to win that game and we didn't go close.

"It was a performance we've all got to take ownership of, the coaches and especially myself because I'm at the forefront of that. We've really got to own up that, to a man, because it's not acceptable.

"You can call it desire, attitude, effort but it comes down to pride in your own performance. The one-on-one missed tackles... all that stuff you can control yourself,.

"There were fundamental errors, penalties, just basics that are letting us down at the moment that shouldn't be happening in first grade."

It leaves them two wins out of the top eight and needing to win seven of their last eight game to reach the finals.

That will become a moot point should they drop their next two games against Penrith - currently riding a six-game winning streak - and Souths.

The remain in the hunt but McGregor admits the loss put a big dent in those hopes.

"If we put our best performance in we can win games of footy and we can win a few in a row to play some finals," McGregor said.

"If we're healthy, look out, but we've got a long way to go after tonight because that was a disappointing performance.

"We had all the guys back from Origin, we had Tariq [Sims] back. We put in a good effort the week before and only lost by a penalty goal to Melbourne.

"We've got James coming back next week, Gareth probably the week after. We had every [reason] to go after the game tonight and we just didn't."

The club's injury woes also deepened further, with Jeremy Latimore injuring an already heavily strapped knee and being helped from the field midway through the first half.

Jarrod Croker opened the scoring with a fifth-minute penalty goal after the Dragons were pinged for three straight infringements.

Cotric grabbed the first try five minutes later after back to back errors from the hosts and Croker followed up, brushing off Euan Aitken en route to the line and a 10-0 lead after 16 minutes.

Things worsened for the hosts when Joseph Tapine crossed from close-range three minutes before the break. Croker converted to give his side a 16-0 cushion at halftime.

Simmonson crossed two minutes after the resumption and Nicoll-Klokstad followed suit three minutes later as the lead ballooned to 26-0.

Sims barged across at the other end and the hosts had a glimmer of hope when Norman Luciano Leilua across three minutes later.

Back-up, back-up kicker Lafai nailed the goal to cut the margin back to 16 before being dumped on his head by Cotric.

He was thankfully not injured but referee Ashley Klein didn't hesitate in giving him his marching orders.

It did nothing to slow the Raiders up, with Siliva Havili bulldozing his way over two minutes later to again blow out the margin.

Nicoll-Klokstad's double was icing on the cake, with Matt Dufty's 90-metre dash for a try two minutes from time little consolation on a sorry night for the Dragons.

Dragons v Raiders: St George Illawarra get dominated despite Nick Cotric being sent off

Dragons fans were left questioning how their team could be on the wrong end of the scoreboard despite having a man advantage for more than a quarter of the game.

Canberra centre Nick Cotric was sent off in the 58th minute for a spear tackle on Dragons counterpart Tim Lafai at WIN Stadium on Sunday evening.

St George Illawarra trailed 26-10 at that point, but the faithful would have been hopeful of a comeback given the extra man.

It wasn't to be.

In fact, the opposite turned out to be true, with the Green Machine laying on two tries to extend their lead to 26 points.

Siliva Havili barged over for a try shortly after Cotric was marched, before fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad hit a hole to cross the stripe, leaving the Dragons defence looking around cluelessly.

Speedster Matt Dufty got one back for the home side in the dying moments, but it was far too little and far too late, the insipid performance leaving plenty of Dragons fans feeling pretty flat.

The Dragons are embarrassing. I love them, but I can't keep watching. Its horrific. #NRLDragonsRaiders

@NRL_Dragons this is the most embarrassing performance of the year. If you don't feel like I do #shattered you're only there for your position not the the club #NRLDragonsRaiders #embarrassing #disgusting

- David Whyte (@DavefromWallan) July 14, 2019

After the match, Dragons coach Paul McGregor labelled it the "worst performance of the season."

"It gave us a real opportunity there with 20 minutes to go and we didn't take it," McGregor said of the send off.

The coach said his side got the basics all wrong, missing one-on-one tackles, making fundamental errors and showing poor discipline.

"We've had our distractions this year but we had enough talent today to win that game of footy and we didn't go close," McGregor said.

"That's not acceptable. You can call it desire, attitude, effort - it comes down to pride in your own performance to make them tackles, told hold on to the footy, to be disciplined."

The loss sees St George Illawarra remain in 14th spot on the ladder, with a 6-10 record eight games out from the finals.

When asked whether the club could still make the top eight, McGregor reiterated his belief in the team's best football stacking up against the competition.

"I think we can win it (the premiership)," McGregor said.

"I know that sounds a bit unrealistic sitting here right now but that's how I approach every training session and every game, that we're going to put our best performance in."

Would say I was sorry for the attending fans in the cold but they've chosen to waste their money in this way.

I almost apologised to my teenage son for forcing him to come and watch. I keep dragging him to home games trying to convince him that nrl is a great game. (as he has no interest what-so-ever) As I intermittently glanced at him shivering in his chair all I got was those looks. It’s funny how they don’t have to say a word but the look Is as much as saying; “Yeah really great idea dad - you #$& wit”
