Mickeylane are you for real that you think that McGregor is no fool ?? Where do I start .... team selections Lafai, Aitken $ Latimore getting picked week in week out. All our good juniors leaving cause there is NO PATHWAY. Robson or as McMudguard says Robinson ,Garrick, Herbert, Masters just to name a few have/are leaving. Bench rotation is the worst in the comp & you think McGregor is no fool .... shame on you !!!
I think you misunderstood me - when I say he’s not a fool I mean it in the context of “saving his job” - he knows the only way he can save his job is bringing in Gould as a Coaching consultant - one of his mates . regarding his prowess and smarts - he’s the dumbest f**k of all time..

So, what does Gus do when he interviews the staff and players and receives a very damming report on the head coach ? Will the staff feel that Gus's interviews with them is basically a review of THEIR job only and essentially result on them being retained or dismissed ? Can't help but feel this is window dressing from the board to avoid what everyone wants. They f**ked up so they should pay him out themselves !

Precisely DP,

As Gould has already alluded to, it's not even a paying job, would you believe.
Just another layer of management bullsh!t to flood the fans & sponsors with.

You know your club is a basket case when that sclerotic old windbag - who talks like he invented the air that goes in the ball - gets his hooks in.

Btw, has anyone read this bollocks?

https://www.smh.com.au/sport/nrl/in...ans-tell-me-to-sack-mary-20190906-p52oj8.html

Apparently the season went to sh#t after de Belin's appeal against the stand-down was rejected? Funny, I was certain I saw Saints looking like a clueless rabble as early as the Charity Shield - not to mention Rounds 1 to 24. Widdop had asked for a release from his contract prior to the decision on de Belin In May 2019. So I call bullsh#t.

Never mind Gus - Blind Freddie could see that McGregor doesn't have what it takes to succeed at this level, It's not a personal attack on the man to say so - the results speak for themselves. Everyone can see that but Gus and the Bored.

Also, the club's stand on JdB is pretty dodgy. If I was running a football side and one of my "star"players went out on the town while his pregnant partner sat at home and had a three-way that resulted in the female party sustaining "injuries to her legs, neck, lower abdomen and shoulder (Police said)"* I would not be having the guy at training, to say the least.

Well I just listened to Gus and a caller asked how in hell can it be a transparent review when Gus is mates with McGregor and McGregor call him about it.

Gus’s reply geez these saints supporters and a crazy bunch.

No we are realists and can see what the club is doing.

The best scenario for us is that the GC put 30 on us tonight and there can be no review as it won’t be needed.

Can anyone tell me why Young Jr has survived and is staying ? ( I know why ) and ... The others are going , it might be a good time to chat with Hornby to see what he thinks ? .... The place is infected it needs pest control bombs ......

Hazz,

Young ( jun ) is being kept on because Young ( snr ) has been at the club so long now, he now needs a fulltime carer to assist him in his daily chores of doing squat.

Young ( jun ) has displayed much promise in learning & delivering squat in the lower grades, so it was a natural progression into senior management. Standby for a media release of advancement to the board.

Here's how the DT interpreted things:

Phil Gould says he is not reviewing Paul McGregor coaching future ahead of his interviews with St George Illawarra staff and players next week after Gould agreed to asses the Dragons football operations in the wake of the club’s horrific season.

The two time premiership winning coach has been in secret negotiations for weeks with Dragons boss Brian Johnston and head coach Paul McGregor to help the embattled club. Gould said he was approached by McGregor a couple of weeks ago to conduct an external review.

“This is not a review of the head coach,” Gould said. “There has been absolutely no indication whatsoever that there will be a change in the head coach.

“The Dragons are simply looking to review this season, to give direction to their future planning and ensuring they are providing all resources possible, to assist the coaches and players to perform to the best of their ability.

“I spoke with Brian Johnston this week about the type of review.”

There are also moves for Gould to have an ongoing role with the club beyond the review. The plan involves Gould becoming a coaching consultant to McGregor and help mentor the St George Illawarra coach and his assistants. It is not expected he will be involved with the day to day coaching of the NRL side, instead he will act as a sounding board to the under-siege McGregor.

“The end of year review process, conducted by every NRL club every year, represents part of the process of future planning,” Gould said. “I’m happy to lend a hand. It’s not a paid job. Every year, even during my time at Panthers, I get NRL coaches, assistant coaches, chairmen, CEOs and even players requesting to catch up and have a cup of coffee to talk about life, their football clubs and their careers. “I’ve always been more than happy to help if I can. I’m looking forward to speaking with the Dragons club next week.”

Gould undertook a similar review for the Cowboys at the end of 2010.

Gould said he will meet with McGregor and Johnston on Tuesday before speaking with the rest of the playing group and staff late next week.

The review is expected to be ongoing during the finals series and concluded by the grand final.

McGregor’s position is not in question but the outcomes of Gould’s review will lead to changes across the organisation. The Dragons won’t finalise the rest of their support staff until Gould has concluded his review. But 2010 premiership winning captain Ben Hornby will exit as assistant coach. Fellow assistant Dean Young has been offered a deal to remain at the club.

St George Illawarra’s horrendous year has sparked the dramatic shake-up. Their second to last finish is their worst result in the joint-venture’s history.

“Nobody at the club is happy with how the Dragons have performed and that’s extended to all our stakeholders including members and supporters,” Johnston said in a statement.

A poor start to next season will see McGregor shown the door immediately. McGregor said “no one in the football department is enthusiastic with the outcome this year” ahead of their bottom of the table clash against Gold Coast today.

Gould grew up a passionate Dragons fan but has never held an official role with the club. He stepped down from his role as Panthers general manager of football earlier this year.

Shuffling chairs on the titantic....The club is totally clueless....

Fans need to vote with their wallets and their feet.....

Why would you give money to this mob ?

‘This has got nothing to do with Paul’s future’: Gus opens up about Dragons season review

Gus Gould has shed light on his role in the St George Illawara Dragons end of season review after reports surfaced this week that the former Rugby League administrator will perform an independent evaluation of the club.

Speaking with Julian King, Gould opened up about the ongoing conversations he has had with Dragons officials, and claims that Dragons has nothing to worry about with the incoming review.

“Over the last few weeks, I’ve had a couple of conversations with Paul McGregor and he indicated that after their last game against the Titans, that there would be an end of year review”, Gould said.

“Every club goes through a season review, it’s not unusual and it is part of your forward planning for the next twelve months. As the CEO Brian Johnston indicated, the review takes on more significance when you’ve had a disappointing year, so it’s usually an internal review”

“It was mainly Paul McGregor saying that we just want an independent set of eyes and ears over the situation. I went and had a meeting with Brian Johnston this week about whether or not they needed this review, and whether or not I was the right man to conduct it as well”.

After finishing this season in 15th place, Gould claims that although the findings in the review will be of huge significance, he won’t be talking about it with anyone else other than Dragons officials.

“I won’t be discussing with anyone about what I find in the review. That will be for whoever I have to report too at the Dragons. This is not a paid exercise, this is merely a favour to a bloke I used to coach in Paul McGregor”, Gould stated.

“There’s no worse place in an NRL club when you are struggling and you can’t see the forest from the trees and you feel like the world is closing in on you. I know what the Dragons are going through”.

After signing a new two-year deal earlier in the year, Dragons Coach Paul McGregor has come under fire for his sides lacklustre performances, but Gould says this review will have nothing to do with future of McGregor.

“The review has got nothing to do with Paul’s future as it has been described to me. There has certainly been no indication in any conversation I’ve had with people at the Dragons that Paul McGregor’s position is in doubt or in jeopardy”, Gould stressed.

“I think the whole review is about future planning and making sure the club can do everything they can to provide the right resources around Paul, his coaching staff and his players, so they can achieve their best.”

Craig Young brokered a deal for his son Dean to occupy the assistant coach position and now another position within the Club.

In the same way, Bob Millward brokered the new Director of everything position for his son Ian.

There are probably many other deals like the one done with BJ for the CEO position that have restricted the progression of SGI.

The review won't even touch on or address these deals. But I am sure that Mary and Millward will be GONE.

No worries.

Looks like the best possible outcome is that Gould mentors McGregor moving forward...
It is a totally contrived outcome
A few platitudes from Gould and the NRL media will be swooning as will many in here.
A couple of wins will see much of the anger swept away until the losses again start to mount up and when it is again too late people will demand change.
Unfortunately not many have the stomach for a protracted battle and the impetus will be lost.
The 2 x 1 point wins proved very costly in the scheme of things.
Put your hands up all those that thought they were worth cheering for.
f**k the club, f**k the coach and f**k Gould who has no balls.
