Josh Dugan could start NRL season in reserves after rejecting Super League move

Keyword "could", reality is that he will not be in reserves unless his form warrants it. Junk mail.

Josh Dugan could be earning $800,000 playing reserve grade football after knocking back a deal to sign with a UK Super League club.

The Sunday Telegraph can reveal the former NSW Origin star “immediately” rejected a two-year offer from the French-based Catalans Dragons in a move that threatens to see him start the season in reserve grade playing for the Cronulla Sharks feeder club the Newtown Jets.

Locked in a five-way battle with Sione Katoa, William Kennedy, Ronaldo Mulitalo and Josh Morris for a wing position with Matt Moylan expected to play fullback, Dugan is facing the real possibility of being paid huge money to play park football.

The Sharks were hoping the utility back would accept the Catalans deal, in a move that would have freed up a massive $1.6 million of salary cap cash — with Dugan contracted to Cronulla for another two years.

It is understood the offer from Catalans was well below the reported $800,000 he is getting at the Sharks.

Still recovering from a leg injury, Dugan is prepared to fight his way back from reserve grade and return to the NRL if he misses out on a round one spot.

Dugan finished the 2019 season in strong form — scoring 11 tries in 23 games.

But the 29-year-old was always going to be challenged for a starting position in 2020 as a result of Cronulla’s rich line of young outside backs.

He will only leave the Sharks if a rival NRL club is prepared to match his Cronulla deal.

Dugan missed a team publicity shoot last week.

And he already has a leg injury, at Catalan he would be playing with Maloney.
So now we basically have Dugan, & Moylan refusing to basically leave shire for 2 years

Can we please have a full back who is able to position himself in defence and can tackle.
Oh and able to break the first line of defence on the odd occasion.
Or am I asking too much?

What a pile of shit article that is. Does he even have a leg injury though? I mean the rest of the article is based on a total of, zero facts. So why not throw in an imaginary injury on a player with a reputation of always getting up hurt to make him look as bad and selfish as possible.

The truth is, he is 1st or 2nd picked in the backline every week. If the whole team played with as much ticker as Duges does we would be very hard to stop.

The leg injury isn’t fixable. It’s a management thing he has had for 10 years.

I severely doubt the bloke could ever do the kilometres needed in off season these days.
That’s why he is a powerful full effort kinda player. Running 250m a game isn’t ever going to be his go.

Still not sure why we picked up Ramien, Dugan is an excellent right centre, other options too.

John's call.

Dugan right centre, Mulitano right wing would work for me.

I think Morris, Xerri left is a lock.

Ramien, Dugan, Mulitano and Katoa, fight for the right.

Kennedy will not play wing.

media beat up. 7 into 5 can't go so obviously a couple are missing out.
Rubbish. This a board driven leak to the red faced alchoholic. Make no mistake, there are types with interest at the club that have self interest, not the club , as primary motivation. No need to look further than De la Salle, who are again, getting their grimy hands all over the club.

In simpler terms, all you have to do is work out who is gettign paid the spotters fee. No percentage fee, flat rate. Dugan would make Catalan very strong indeed. The rejection was obvious outcome.
So how do you keep the deal smouldering? Divide & conquer.
Big question is , what kind of kick backs do the reporters get?

Duges missed the Channel 9 photo shoot this week?
The one where anyone who's a chance of playing first grade in a sharks jumper needs to get their mug shot?
So when they promo our televised games they can show our main players?
That one?

Well that's interesting.
