New signing Wayde Egan has been named to make his club debut in the first 2020 NRL trial against the Storm at Central Energy Trust Arena in Palmerston North on Saturday (5.00pm kick-off).

The 22-year-old hooker, who made 29 NRL appearances for Penrith in 2018 and 2019, will also be having his first outing since recovering from shoulder surgery last year.

Egan is one of 10 players with NRL experience named by head coach Stephen Kearney for the Vodafone Warriors’ first trial in the Manawatu in the last there years.

Tonga international David Fusitu’a is the most experienced player named. Needing four more appearances to reach his 100-game milestone, Fusitu’a, the NRL’s top try scorer in 2018, is included along with four 2019 NRL rookies in centre-winger Patrick Herbert, utility Hayze Perham and halves Chanel Harris-Tavita and Adam Keighran. Perham, Tavita-Harris and Keighran all back up after being involved in the Perth NRL Nines last weekend.

Other NRL players named are prop Sam Lisone, middle forward Lachlan Burr, second rower Taane Milne and interchange forward Leivaha Pulu.

The two other players in the starting backline – fullback Rocco Berry and winger Edward Kosi – were also at the Nines. Other Nines players selected are Lisone and Milne plus Temple Kalepo, Jackson Frei, Paul Turner, Selestino Ravutaumada and Pulu.

Apart from Berry, Kosi, Kalepo, Ravutaumada and Turner, Kearney has called on a number of the club’s other highly promising young players in Phillip Makatoa, Tom Ale, Eliesa Katoa, Israel Ogden, Tyler Slade and Isaiah Vagana.

The Vodafone Warriors arrive in Palmerston North on Thursday when they’ll have a pool recovery session before their final field session at Central Energy Trust Arena at 10.00am on Friday. The session is open to the public to attend and will be followed by a signing opportunity.

When the Vodafone Warriors last played a trial in Palmerston North in 2017 they beat the Gold Coast Titans 26-6.

is it my imagination or do we always seem to play the same 3 teams in preseason, titans, storm, tigers?

Nothing spectacular, a couple of guys with speed.
But general passing was crap in both technique and direction. Handling average. The break we made early in second half showed this perfectly.
Tackling was poor on the edges.

CHT was solid and should be our 6.
Keighran drop out impressive at 65m.

Felt like they playing on some kind of Helicarrier with all the propellers around!

Fus in the centres and Herbert on the wing?

We're not going to go back to Cappy-style playing lots of guys out of position, are we?

Stino flashed again, that's the main thing that really stood out to me. But then, I've been drinking - heavily.

Fus started off as a centre so I wouldn’t call that out of position. Not convinced he’ll be as good there though.

We've seen him play 15ish games at centre in NRL... he wasn't particularly good compared to his play on the wing. When we have Herbert & Hiku, why is this something that's happening?

I mean, if it was driven by Stino being dominant and us pushing to get a speedster on the wing, I can at least understand the thinking process.. but it seems more like Fus/Herbert being switched (and Stino seems well down the pecking order, going on when they've chosen to use him this preseason - though Hayze could fill a similar role I guess), which just seems dumb.

Captain Roger Tuivasa-Sheck will lead the strongest available side in the Vodafone Warriors’ final NRL trial against Wests Tigers at the International Stadium in Rotorua on Sunday (2.00pm kick-off).

After fielding a host of emerging players in last Saturday’s 16-18 loss to Melbourne in Palmerston North, head coach Stephen Kearney has named a vastly experienced squad.

Maori Kiwis co-captain Adam Blair and standoff Kodi Nikorima both come into the side after helping their side to a famous 30-16 win over the Australian Indigenous team in Saturday night’s intense All-Stars contest.

Blair is selected to start in the second row while Nikorima lines up in the halves alongside veteran Blake Green.

Front rower Josh Curran and Jamayne Taunoa-Brown will back up from the bench after playing for the Australian Indigenous side in Robina.

In other features Kiwi second rower Tohu Harris starts after recovering from a foot injury which has side-lined him since June last year, David Fusitu’a is again named in the centres – he was used in the role in Palmerston North – with Patrick Herbert on the right wing and new signing Wayde Egan starting at hooker.

As well as Tuivasa-Sheck, Blair, Harris, Nikorima and Green, other first-choice players having their first and only trial ahead of the 2020 campaign will be front rowers Agnatius Paasi and Leeson Ah Mau, Isaiah Papali’i – named at loose forward – and Kiwi winger Ken Maumalo.

Included on a 12-man bench are halfback Chanel Harris-Tavita and middle forward Lachlan Burr – both used in Pamerston North – and centre Peta Hiku, who returns from offseason surgery. Also on the interchange is hooker Karl Lawton after returning from surgery last weekend.

The match will be a special occasion for 2019 NRL rookie and Rotorua Boys’ High School product Hayze Perham; he starts in the centres.

Sunday’s trial is the fifth the Vodafone Warriors have played in Rotorua. Their first was against the Sydney Roosters in 2010 when they won 26-8 while the other three also provided wins over Parramatta (24-4) in 2011, Penrith (18-4) in 2015 and the Storm (20-14) in 2018.

Perham getting a run at centre. interesting.
Yeah that did not happen.

Hiku started then Haze was called on to replace RTS as he came off (ankle).

Curran started for Blair, shared. Harris played 80, as did Green.

Nikorima played first half, Chanel played 2nd.

Egan played 50, then Lawton.

Jamayne Taunoa-Brown was good.

WTF were those jerseys....looked like the dogs.

Curran had some issues with his hands. CHT flashed a bit. RTS looked good before going down with an ankle. Tohu getting through 80 and looking pretty good was encouraging. Egan wasn't great at dummy half... but not awful either. Herbert still looks quality.

JTB looked promising, yeah, and Paasi & Ah Mau looked good... but it was the one pack that might be worse than our own so no idea what to take from that. Pulu looked pretty good in his brief stint - if that's anything to go by he'll be marginalized again this season when he should be in the 17.

Hiku got absolutely annihilated in defence, and Ken wasn't too far off that outside him.
