True though what’s the difference if the execution of that strategy is done in-house or is outsourced to a third party?

Channel 9’s stance is that the NRL’s core competencies are primarily based around managing a rugby league competition, not those of a media company. And of course nine would view it that way, it’s the business they are in. Remember when a media company tried to run a rugby league competition?
Well it’s cheaper to do it in house for starters. You then own the IP so you’re not held over a barrel during contract renegotiations. You can get contract resources and outsource some of the work but you don’t hand it all off to someone else to own it.

Channel 9 don’t want the NRL to become a competent business because they can see the writing on the wall in the near future.

With the Warriors being allowed into the country it looks like the 28th of May will be a goer(unless the player's completely Paul Carige it) this will be me watching Sports Sunday with that Bandana wearing f**kwit on.

The tears will be delicious which will later be used for lube.

The NRL wouldn’t be alone here. A lot of companies are now choosing to do their own in-house advertising for example as it’s far cheaper and you have more control over you brand.

Yep, and It's clear they see value in this venture, so it's crazy to contemplate selling it.

They also know that if they control the media output, they can continue to devalue the game.

Looks like Nine will be looking under the sofa for every cent it can find to pay for the NRL. Wonder when the NRL will release a statement criticising how Nine have squandered all the advertising revenue that NRL games have generated for the station over the years?
Channel 9 needs to save $130m to pay for NRL broadcast rights
After telling the ASX that Channel 9 would save $130 million by not broadcasting NRL games this year, CEO Hugh Marks is looking for $130 million in cuts following news that the rugby league season is set to resume later this month, writes Annette Sharp.

Nine media bosses are poised to drop an axe on the network’s news division, with insiders predicting 60 Minutes will bear the brunt of severe cuts that must now be made to support CEO Hugh Marks’ recent advice to the stock exchange.

Having boldly informed the ASX on March 30 that the network would save $130 million by not paying broadcasting rights for NRL games during the 2020 calendar year, Marks is preparing to make $130 million in cuts across the business following news that the rugby league season is set to resume later this month.

Television insiders expect almost a quarter of the cuts to come from Nine’s costly news division, and believe jobs will go in both the television and publishing ranks as the CEO trims the $180 million news budget by as much as $30 million to $40 million.

At 60 Minutes, where stalwart reporters such as Liz Hayes are on salaries of more than $500,000 a year, there are concerns the show may not survive, or at least not in a format that audiences now recognise.

“60 Minutes’ budget is around $20 million a year. It’s an obvious place to start, with the program slipping in the ratings and failing to hold on to the leads given it by shows like Lego Masters,” the insider said.

Since making the statement on March 30, Nine’s share price — in a COVID-19 suppressed market — has lifted from $1.05 to $1.42 before falling back to $1.37 during a month in which no other announcements were made by Nine.

If Nine can’t find savings in other areas, it must reverse or correct its ASX guidance to the market, which now seems unlikely.

difference is where the profit goes. Digital used to be bundled in tv rights so nrl got very little from it, also it was poorly delivered.

since bringing it in house the quality has gone through the roof and the profit margin is now $12million a year. Not to mention it is a safeguard for the future delivery of the games content and keeps nine and fox worrying about nrl having an option to flick them off. It would be insane to give it up now.

nrl should demand to see their books and start publicly stating they need to sort their business out and cut costs lol

no they said it takes ratings , eyeballs from their media

also the digital arm can be used for production and nrl can use it to get away

Seriously they should . Time to stand up for themselves .
Use an unnamed nrl spokesperson like they have used the unnamed nine spokesperson on nine

Yep. For about the last 40 years.
Packer's channel Nein had it's hand on the throat of the NSWRL long before SuperLeague, and the only change since then is what percentage of the power sits with Nein and how much with News Ltd.

I have to say I’ve like what V’landys has managed so far. He doesn’t give a toss what people think of him. Just ploughs on doing what he believes is best for the game. Hopefully this continues with the nrl.com and broadcasters saga.
I was sceptical of him purely because he is so popular with News Ltd writers.

Good to hear Nein are looking at axing the junk journalists at 60 minutes, they can start with Tara Brown who thinks she’s above the laws of a foreign country because she’s part of the media in-club.

Fitz arguement of "how can they start, when everyone else is still shut" is especially disingenuous, when it's highly likely most of the country will be open, in some form, come May 28.

He is also failing to be honest about Super Rugby, in that the only reason they are still shut down is because of their international travel ban, not through some great altruism.
