ALAN JONES

Never particularly liked his style , he was indeed arrogant , abusive and at times downright mean . But in saying that he did also possess a great deal of intellect , a mind that could tackle problems which to some may seem insurmountable .

However at the end of the day I would much prefer to listen to ‘ The man with the golden tonsils ‘ none other than John Laws - he was far more down to earth .

Can anyone recall the original ‘ Shock - Jock ‘ Ward Palley Austin the chap who use to dress up in an American Civil War Confederate uniform ? When the Honda motorcycle came out to Australia he done a radio commercial that got him sacked from whatever station he was employed . The infamous line was “ Hey girls how would you like to sit on something big , red and hot - well jump onto the new Honda motorcycle ! “

Yes , give me John Laws or Ward Palley Austin anyday over Allan Jones .
Good Post Gareth67. I will miss his Gloria intro hahaha!

The end of an era on radio with Alan Jones' leaving 2GB.
Not a name I readily associate with the NRL, but he did coach Balmain for a couple of years back in the early 90's (apparently not accepting a salary) and went on to a management position at Souths, again for no fee. His coaching career in the NRL was not much of an improvement on our own maestro.
While I fit snugly into the age bracket of his audience, I was never a fan of his ranting and abusive style but I had to admire his genius in capturing a solid slice of the listeners and tapping into their prejudices and fears. I lost count of the number of buses and taxis I rode in while his voice ranted and raved on the radio at anyone to the left of Genghis Khan.
The fact that just about every Prime Minister in nearly thirty years and almost every other politician has been on his show when ever he waved his finger is a tribute to his skills and influence.
I suspect a lot of folks on this forum probably listened to him and either liked or loathed him and would be interested in their take on him moving on.

Hard to categorise him- certainly a man of contrasts and inconsistencies- brilliant, extremely knowledgeable across a huge range of subjects- History, Literature, Music, Sport, Politics, the Arts- could articulate an argument better than just anybody I"ve heard. Yes, he is right wing in many ways but is an old fashioned agrarian socialist as well- no doubt due to his family dairy farming background. Many of the pump priming infrastructure projects he's championed over the years would be frowned on by conservative economic rationalists- the type that gravitate towards the Liberal Party- and yet he is a dyed in the wool Liberal himself.

Of his many irritating personal qualities, one of the worst in my book was his impatience. He constantly interjected when interviewing and I found myself on many occasions just screaming at him to shut up and let the person finish their sentence uninterrupted.

My recollection re Ward Pally was. ‘ girls how would you like to have something hot and throbbing between your legs.’ But I’m 102 yo maybe my memory is not so good.
In any event Austin did not carry on with the appalling right wing agenda that the arrogant feminine hating Jones does.

Just as bad a coach as Mary is
I remember my mate who played 1st grade for the tigers in the Ryan/Jones era saying the difference in the halftime speeches was, Ryan would tell you what the other side was doing & what they had to do to counteract it while Jones would simply say "we have to get the ball & kick it early down field & wait for a mistake"
Coincidently Fox had an old game on last week when Jones was coaching Balmain & the amount of early kicks Elias did from dummy half going out on the full was laughable, it jogged my memory of his inept attempt to think he could introduce a RugbyUnion style of play to Rugby league.

There’s nothing wrong with your memory Outlaw Pete , your recollection is indeed spot-on . I decided to leave the ‘ throbbing etc. ‘ out of the tale , as I did not wished to be barred from the forum as others have recently.

hiring Jones as a league coach was a publicity stunt. The merkin had less idea than Mary.

You forgot "throbbing".

WPA was terrific and perfect for new age teenagers growing up but I was a bit of a Garry O'Callaghan and Sammy Sparrow sort of a kid as well.

I remember one day O'Callaghan said that Sammy had gone missing in his helicopter and within minutes the switchboard lit up with sightings of the missing bird.

Radio had a very pleasant side it to back then with the perennial battle between Bob Rogers and John Laws for No 1 in the ratings but somewhere along the way radio lost its way and the nasty side of broadcasting and horrible political comment came to pass.

The media moguls have a lot to answer for.

Alan who?
Alan Who? Alan Jones. The guy who supported Pauline Hanson's rise, incited race riots in Cronulla, threatens physical violence against women, denies climate change and oh yeh.....was arrested in London for indecent behavior in a public toilet. He has been a shit-stain on the landscape of this country for too long.
I suspect that there is a part of Alan Jones that he hates and fears in himself. And that is why he hates so well.

Yes he was also one of the better radio announcers Gary O’Callaghan that is , the name sort of rolled of the tongue . But I did not actually forget the throbbing , just thought that it would had been tactful to omit the full verse it case it offended anyone .

OT,I think that, as with many things we jumped on trends coming out of the U.S. where the Shock Jock idea was born. I remember both Rogers and Laws were both gentlemen even though there was supposed to be a feud between them. Laws used to sign off with "Be Kind to Each Other". Both are still on the air, aged in their 90's!
