Not reliable, Hetherington has had his loan to us extended for four weeks, he is signed to the end of 2021with Penrith, not us. The Murchie & Murdoch-Masila gains are correct, as are the Katoa & Murdoch-Masila re-signings. Alvaro & Faamausili can't be counted as losses for next year as they are only loan players, Faamausili went back to the Roosters 5 weeks ago.

Hetherington's loan stay extended by four weeks
Agreement has been reached for Penrith Panthers prop Jack Hetherington to extend his loan stay with the Vodafone Warriors for another four weeks.

The 24-year-old made his fourth appearance for the Vodafone Warriors against the Sydney Roosters on Saturday after joining the club on an initial four-week loan deal from Penrith late last month.

The 1.90m, 107kg Hetherington was used on the bench against Brisbane and Gold Coast before starting against Cronulla-Sutherland and the Roosters.

“We’re extremely grateful to (general manager) Matt Cameron and (head coach) Ivan Cleary at the Panthers as well as the NRL for making it possible for Jack to stay on for a further four weeks,” said Vodafone Warriors recruitment manager Peter O’Sullivan.

“It’s a huge help to us at a time when we’re short on players, especially middle forwards.

Hetherington earned his first career start in the Vodafone Warriors’ clash against Cronulla-Sutherland and was in the run-on side again in his 20th appearance on Saturday.

He’s from impressive rugby league stock. His father Brett played a total of 142 NRL games for Canberra and North Queensland from 1992-2001 while he’s a grandson of 1968-1978 Roosters great Bill Mullins and nephew of former Raiders and Roosters star Brett Mullins.

Green granted release
Vodafone Warriors halfback Blake Green has requested and been granted an immediate release from his contract.

Green (33) approached the club through his manager Isaac Moses seeking a release from the last three months of his contract to enable him to join another NRL club.

“We were committed to Blake staying with us for the rest of the season but he and his management have indicated they want an immediate release,” said Vodafone Warriors CEO Cameron George.

“Given the circumstances we have granted his request.

“We thank Blake for the contribution he has made to the Vodafone Warriors over the last three years and wish him and his family all the best for the future.”

The Vodafone Warriors became Green’s sixth NRL club when he was signed after spending the 2017 season with Manly Warringah Sea Eagles.

His 55th and final appearance for the club was last Friday night’s 26-20 win over the Wests Tigers at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Brown aboard as head coach
Vodafone Warriors CEO Cameron George has today confirmed the vastly-experienced Nathan Brown as the club’s new head coach.

The 47-year-old former St George Illawarra and Newcastle coach has been secured on a three-year deal to the end of the 2023 NRL season.

“We couldn’t be more delighted to have Nathan as our new head coach,” said George.

“He has had an extensive involvement in the game as both a first-grade player and then as a coach in the NRL and the Super League.

“He already has a relationship with our players, football staff and our club after being with us as a coaching consultant working with our hookers this season.

Brown has a career total of almost 450 matches coaching NRL clubs St George Illawarra and Newcastle as well as Huddersfield and St Helens in the English Super League. As a hooker, he made 172 first-grade appearances for St George and St George Illawarra before becoming an NRL coach at the age of 29.

George said Gould will provide advice and guidance in key strategic areas designed to build the Vodafone Warriors’ trans-Tasman commercial and general profile.

“This appointment is exceptionally significant and critical to the future of our business as a whole and equally to the game in general both in New Zealand and in Australia,” he said.

After a 104-game first grade playing career, Gould coached the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and Penrith Panthers to premiership titles as well as being coaching director at the Sydney Roosters when they beat the Vodafone Warriors in the 2002 NRL grand final final. He also coached New South Wales to three consecutive State of Origin series wins in 1992, 1993 and 1994 followed by a 3-0 whitewash in 1996. In a second stint with the Blues he guided them to two more triumphs as well as a drawn series in 2002-2004.

He took up a role as general manager with the Penrith Panthers from 2011-2019 when he drove the rebuilding of the club, which is currently leading this year’s NRL competition.

Gould was made a member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2014 for “significant service to rugby league football as an administrator, commentator, coach and player and to the community.”

Giant Eels prop Evans signed
The Vodafone Warriors have added more size to their 2021 NRL roster by signing giant Parramatta Eels prop Kane Evans, one of the tallest players in the competition.

Boasting 108 NRL appearances for the Sydney Roosters and the Eels, the 199cm, 110kg Evans (28) has been secured on a two-year deal to the end of the 2022 season.

His acquisition further boosts the club’s stocks of big forwards for next season following the signing of Mate Ma’a Tonga international Ben Murdoch-Masila from Warrington while Canberra’s Jack Murchie joined the Vodafone Warriors in May.

“Kane is a really important signing for us as he brings the size, leg speed and aggression that we are looking to add to our pack,” said Vodafone Warriors recruitment manager Peter O’Sullivan.

“With Ben Murdoch-Masila coming, the rise of young Eliesa Katoa, Jack Murchie joining us and now Kane it dramatically changes the dynamics of the squad.

“Kane always played in winning teams during his junior days and he brings that winning culture with him.

“Through his time at the Roosters and Parramatta he knows what this looks like and this was an ingredient we were keen to add to our squad.

After excelling for the Roosters in the National Youth Competition, he represented the New South Wales Under-20s and the Junior Kangaroos in 2012 before making Fiji’s squad for the 2013 Rugby League World Cup.

Evans debuted at NRL level for the Roosters early in 2014 and went to play 74 first-grade games for the club before signing with Parramatta for the 2018 season.

He has made seven appearances for the Eels so far this season, scoring one of their two tries in their 14-12 win over the Sharks on Sunday.

Hopoate secured on loan

• Agreement has been reached with the NRL and both clubs for exciting Manly Warringah Sea Eagles outside back Albert Hopoate to join the Vodafone Warriors on loan for the next four weeks.

He will link up with the Vodafone Warriors at their Terrigal base on Sunday, becoming the club’s fifth loan player overall and the fourth currently in camp.

The 19-year-old is a younger brother of Canterbury-Bulldogs fullback Will Hopoate and son of 1993-2005 NRL player John Hopoate.

“We’re hugely grateful to (head coach) Des Hasler and the Sea Eagles as well as the NRL for the support they’ve given us in making Albert available,” said Vodafone Warriors recruitment manager Peter O’Sullivan.

“We’re delighted to have Albert on board. He was a prodigious talent coming through the junior grades, representative sides and Origin age teams for New South Wales.

Hopoate comes into the squad to provide much-needed depth in the outside backs following the loss of experienced wingers David Fusitu’a and Ken Maumalo, who returned home last month for family reasons.

“Again we’re so thankful to the NRL and especially to Des and Manly for allowing Albert to join us,” said Vodafone Warriors CEO Cameron George.

Sydney Roosters prop Poasa Faamausili, the Vodafone Warriors’ first loan player, made four appearances before the Roosters recalled him following a spate of injuries.

He was replaced by Penrith prop Jack Hetherington who has played six times for the club but was suspended following last week’s win over Manly; he remains in camp.

Experienced St George Illawarra centre Euan Aitken has been confirmed as the Vodafone Warriors’ latest signing after being snared on a three-year contract until the end of the 2023 NRL season.

The 25-year-old Scotland international’s acquisition further boosts the club’s 2021 roster following the recent addition of towering Parramatta prop Kane Evans.

Aitken made his 117th first-grade appearance for the Dragons in their 28-24 win over the Brisbane Broncos last night.

“We are really excited to have a player of Euan’s capabilities joining us,” said Vodafone Warriors recruitment manager Peter O’Sullivan.

“He can play either side of the field and is in stellar form at the moment.

“Euan was a State of Origin squad playertwo years ago and he’s back in that form at the moment. I can see his game going from strength to strength as he hits his prime age and experience levels.

“His ability to break the line with power and speed are what he’ll bring to us and he’s a robust player with big upside.”

A consistent try scorer with a total of 38 tries so far (a best of 10 in 2018), Aitken leads all centres so far this season for metres gained (1980 in 13 appearances, an average of 152 metres a game) and post contact metres (814). He ranks behind only Joseph Manu as the centre with the most tackle breaks (49) while he has been one of the most effective defensive centres in the competition this season with just 10 missed tackles so far.

“After speaking with Euan we were ultra-impressed with his professionalism and we’re looking for him to be a leader in our group moving forward,” said Vodafone Warriors CEO Cameron George.

“He’s a quality young man who fits all the criteria we are looking for in our players and he can’t wait to join us and be part of a successful Vodafone Warriors outfit.”

After playing his junior football for the Merimbula-Pambula Bulldogs and Shellharbour Sharks, Aitken excelled for the Dragons in the National Youth Competition in 2013 and 2014, representing the Australian Schoolboys on tour in New Zealand in 2013 and lining up for the Junior Kangaroos in a 14-15 loss to the Junior Kiwis in Auckland in 2014. His teammates included Clint Gutherson, Waqa Blake, Ryan Matterson, Matt Lodge, Cameron McInnes, Joe Ofahengaue, Tevita Pangai, Jackson Bird and Cameron Munster while Kodi Nikorima was in the Kiwi side alongside Te Maire Martin, Sam Lisone, Addin Fonua-Blake, Joseph Tapine, Nelson Asofa-Solomona, Danny Levi and Braden Hamlin-Uele.

Aitken immediately established himself as a specialist centre on making his NRL debut for the Dragons as a 19-year-old in 2015, going on to start there in each of his 23 matches that season; he has filled that role on all but seven occasions in his six seasons at NRL level (used on the wing twice and on the interchange five times).

Another new addition to the Vodafone Warriors’ 2021 roster is Warrington’s Mate Ma’a Tonga international Ben Murdoch-Masila while back rower Jack Murchie has also been signed on an extended deal after initially joining the club only until the send of this year.

Loan stay extended for Alvaro and Jennings
Agreement has today been reached for Parramatta prop Daniel Alvaro and winger George Jennings to extend their loan stays with the Vodafone Warriors but young Manly outside back Albert Hopoate has been recalled by his club.

It was initially thought yesterday’s 20-14 win over the Bulldogs would be the fourth and last appearance for the on-loan Eels teammates but the Vodafone Warriors, Parramatta and the NRL have since cleared the way for them to stay on.

However, 19-year-old Hopoate, who was in line to make his NRL debut during his time with the Vodafone Warriors, has been called back due to Manly’s injury issues.

“We’re thrilled Daniel and George are able to stay on but we’re also disappointed for Albert who leaves without playing for us after just a week in camp. He’s a terrific young man,” said Vodafone Warriors recruitment manager Peter O’Sullivan.

“We really appreciate the lengths (coach) Brad Arthur, (recruitment manager) Peter Sharp and the Eels as well as the NRL are going to in helping us at a time when we’re so desperately short of players. Daniel and George have fitted in so well in our environment and have been a real credit to their club with the way they’ve conducted themselves on and off the field.

“We really enjoyed having Albert in camp with us. He made a wonderful impression, too. We thank (Manly coach) Des Hasler and the Sea Eagles for showing their support and wish Albert all the best for the future.”

Since joining the Vodafone Warriors, Alvaro and Jennings have been involved in the team’s run of three wins – all away games – in their last four outings.

Alvaro has lifted his career tally of appearances to 92 and Jennings to 32.

Hiku signs for another year
Vodafone Warriors centre Peta Hiku has recommitted to the club after being re-signed on a one-season deal for 2021.

The 27-year-old Kiwi international, off contract at the end of the season, returned to the club on a three-year deal in 2018 after starting his NRL career with Manly-Warringah in 2013 before a stint with Penrith and later with Warrington in the English Super League.

His re-signing comes after the Vodafone Warriors recently announced St George Illawarra Dragons centre Euan Aitken had been secured on a three-year contract from next season.

“Peta deserves his new contract. He has been in stellar form the last six weeks and has worked really hard on his game,” said Vodafone Warriors recruitment manager Peter O’Sullivan.

“He brings unbelievable skill and try scoring involvement whether it be setting them up or scoring them himself. It’s no coincidence the wingers outside him are always around the top of the try scoring list.”

Hiku, a Manurewa Marlins junior, is the Vodafone Warriors’ top try scorer so far this season with six, including a hat-trick in the 37-26 win over North Queensland and a double in the 26-20 victory against Wests Tigers.

“Peta provides invaluable experience to our club. With a number of promising young outside backs coming through, they’ll benefit from his talent.,” said Vodafone Warriors CEO Cameron George.

“As a very popular member of the squad, it’s great news to have him on board as we continue to build our roster for 2021 and the future.”

Hiku has averaged 113 metres a game in his 14 appearances but has lifted that average to 128 a game in the club’s last six matches. He has also provided five try assists across those six games including two in last Saturday’s 36-6 win over Newcastle.

Used on the right edge in 2018, he played a key role in right winger David Fusitu’a taking out the Dally M top try scorer award with 23 touchdowns and he was just as influential in 2019 when he was moved to the left edge helping Ken Maumalo to a team-high 17 tries.
