You mean you. Nobody else over their watches RL closely enough to have heard those comments from PV.

grow up. There are plenty of RL fans across Australia, and even more potential ones, and the game should be doing everything in its power to grow their customer base, not pss off half of the country. And that’s before we get into the value of govt support in those states to the nrl. Wa, SA and vic govts have put tens of millions of $’s into rl in last few years. People on here whinge about the amount of govt support afl gets, then Vlandys comes out with sht like this that just turns states off supporting the game. After his rusted afl states comments the WA govt came out publicly and said if that was the games attitude it would be reconsidering the investments it had made backing RL here.

did you forget the ‘stop wasting money on afl states” comments? Great way to engage your fanbase in those states!
It looks immature, Trump’esk, unprofessional and not befitting the games leader. But yeh the Sydney rednecks will love it so all good eh?

the question you should ask is “does this benefit or harm rugby league?” Looks to me that all it does is Harm it, so you have to ask why he keeps doing it? Nsw racing agenda maybe? Can’t believe so many people have the wool pulled over their eyes by this guy and his conflicts of interest, but then Again Trump made President so I guess we should never uNder estimate the stupidity of the masses!
You're like a broken record when it comes to bitching about PVL and Trump.

The RL 'fanbase' in Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth is tiny. Canberra probably has a larger pool of active supporters than all 3 metro areas if Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth combined. The combined viewership in Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth would be around 30,000-35,000 for games not involving the Storm.

It would be great to see interest in the game in SA, Vic and WA grow, but it's unlikely to happen, regardless of whether the ARLC gives in to all of your demands.

Insulting the heartland by referring to its fans as 'rednecks' does nothing for the game in the non-RL states.

If you think Hillary was a better candidate than Trump then you're mad. Trump has done wonders for the economy and lowered the unemployment rate, especially amongst the African-American community. Hillary is a corrupt war criminal and belongs in a prison cell.

Amen!

RL fans in WA are a small minority. They've had 70 years to make something of the game and failed miserably. Throwing bucket loads of cash at them and blowing smoke up their arse isn't going to lead to a mass of Western Australians chucking away their Sherrins and buying Steedens. PVL knows this and is doing what any sensible businessman would do. What makes PVL so great is he had to make it to the top the hard way. Nothing was handed to him on a silver platter. He understands where money comes from and how it's made. Get woke, go broke, is a real thing. PVL is doing the wise thing avoiding it like the plague.

Perth Red isn't ARLC Chairman.

Good grief.

If you get pissed off and alienated by these comments then you're a soft c**k who probably watches ABC and rides a scooter to your vegan coffee shop.

there’s a certain irony in the month the afl gets the qlnd Govt to provide massive support to their game and strengthening that relationship, that Vlandys chooses this moment to come out and insult Victoria and pss of a major stakeholder in rugby leagues future growth!
No doubts the deluded on here will blame the Vic govt in future for not supporting RL and call them afl centric lol.

That's nice PR, but one off events drawing 20,000 don't prove shit. A full time team in Perth isn't going to average 20,000 a game when it is holding 12 games each year, year after year. The monotony of going to the ground every fortnight, 12 times a year, year after year, wears support pretty thin.

The last few games at Perth Oval drew shit attendances.

2017
2 matches.
17,691 Total / 8,846 Ave

2016
2 matches.
24,251 Total / 12,126 Ave

2015
1 match.
20,727

2014
2 matches.
32,281 Total / 16,140 Ave.

2013
1 match.
20,221.

2012
1 match.
15,599.

2011
1 match.
15,371.

2010
1 match.
13,164.

2009
1 match.
15,197.

2005
1 match.
13,293.

Overall
13 matches.
187,795 Total / 14,445 Ave.

Only 2 of 13 games drew an attendance over 20,000.

Only 3 of 13 games drew 16,000+.

1 of 13 games drew less than 9,000.

Why do you think there was a significant drop off? We had consistent growth and sell outs for years, what changed I wonder? Maybe all those fans just decided to stop following rl, where grabbed by aliens or eaten by sharks? Or maybe the way the nrl treats perth is coming home to roost? The. Again 39k at the double header couple of years ago might suggest not?
Vlandys comments on the eve of the nines certainly didn’t help ticket sales that’s for sure!

How much money did the various Victorian Govs invest in grassroots RL between 1998 and 2020?

How much was spent upgrading facilities at junior and senior clubs across the state?

How much was spent on programs to get kids playing the game at public schools?

Out of the 8 games that have been played there since its latest upgrade, only TWO have sold out. It's not exactly a big ground, either. Only 20,500. Townsville and Gold Coast have bigger and better stadiums, and they're regional cities.

The ground was redeveloped between 2002-2004 to increase its capacity to 19,500 spectators. It was then upgraded a second time in 2012 to increase its capacity to 20,500.

Would a Perth team even be able to afford the rental coats of the ground?

Sage says he has been trying to renegotiate the deal for three years, but has received no help from the Western Australia government, the owners of the venue. Instead, they insist it is a matter between Sage and the stadium management company, Allia Holdings, headed by ex-Glory owner Nick Tana.

"Every home game costs me personally between $30,000 and $60,000," Sage said. "The basic hiring fee is fine, but there are so many add-ons for providing services that other venues provide automatically - we have to pay for security, cleaning, for televisions in the media area, insurance, parking, emergency services, and big screens that costs us $22,000. "We even get charged $4,000 for the security staff radios."

Because of the extra costs, the Glory would need gates of 13,500 to break even at home matches, which is impossible with a capacity pegged at below 10,000. Sage estimates the club will lose between $1.5 million and $1.7 million this season, of which $1.2 million will be due to costs incurred by hiring the stadium.

If Perth was serious about demanding an NRL team they would get someone to relocate. Even if the Bears relocated and played in the NSW cup from Perth it would make their admission way more likely.
It seems selfish to demand a brand new team while at the same time being aware you aren't going to be producing any actual RL players for many years and instead just doing the same thing the Storm have done.

Well said.

After 22 years, Melbourne is still struggling to produce players that can match it in the BRL, let alone the Queensland Cup or NRL.

Perth Oval needs a significant upgrade before it'll be ready to sustain an NRL team. It's an old dilapidated heap of shit, turned into a poor man's rectangular field after it was no longer wanted by the WAFL. The WA Gov has only thrown a few crumbs at it, then hoped the NRL would be stupid enough to give them a team that will be putting its hand out for years just to survive. At least the Vic Gov built a nice ground for the Storm and Victory.

Forget Perth. The time zone and extra travel make it logistically and financially difficult. Go where the strength is - Brisbane 2 & 3.
PVL interview on ABC today - only thing to report was no expansion of women’s comp for a while.

And the reason for that is the players themselves don't want expansion yet as they believe it will dilute the quality. I believe in the final round the dragons only played with 16 as they couldn't rustle up a full team due to injuries

and all the other sports that have teams in Perth, how do they deal with this humongous logistical challenge?

I agree.

Melbourne is important to the game as it's the second largest city and on the eastern side of the country. Perth is only the 4th largest city and a 6 hour plane flight from the east coast.

How many players will want to travel to and from Perth for 6 hours at a time, 12 times a year?

It might be alright for younger players who are healthy, but the veterans who've had numerous operations on their knees, ankles, shoulders and elbows wouldn't appreciate being hobbled up for 6 hours a time after a bruising game.
