Storm add ex-NRL refs boss as a consultant
By AUSTRALIAN ASSOCIATED PRESS

Former referees boss Bernard Sutton will join Melbourne as a technical consultant in his first club role since leaving the NRL.

The Storm confirmed on Tuesday that Sutton would join them in a remote role for 2021, after they conceded the fourth most penalties last season.

Sutton oversaw the change to the one-referee system last year, which included the introduction and interpretation of the six-again rule.

He is not the first former referee to take on a club role.

The Storm used Adam Devcich last year while Luke Phillips is now the Sydney Roosters football manager.

Storm general manager of football Frank Ponissi said Sutton's experience with rugby league's laws and how they're implemented at the elite level would assist the club in improving an area that had been highlighted during post-season reviews.

"We are always looking at those one percenters and what we can do to make ourselves better," Ponissi said.

"Reducing the number of penalties we concede is one area we have targeted for improvement as is adapting to the new laws to be introduced in 2021.

"He won't be at training but he'll be available remotely for Craig and our assistant coaches to use for guidance and advice as the season progresses."

Sutton refereed 44 games between 2007 and 2018, and was part of the NRL's management from 2013 until they parted ways late last year.
