Anything that sticks the knife in Union is all good by me. I'll add a plus in the ledger for Vlandys (though he is saying he's doing it for NSW racing advantage and hasnt mentioned RL)
It was only a few posts ago-
Checkmate - He can use the cover of his position of NSW racing to grant favors to the NRL or punishments to NRL adversary.
Their is something good about the sport of kings and rugby League and Vlandy has used his postion(s) masterfully to rubuke nine and ra ra

Rugby League is a dying sport anyway. Not dying but stagnant and V'Landys hasn't done enough to innovate in the NRL.

Like it or not, the AFLs expansion into NSW and Qld will provide dividends in the future. Junior rates continue to increase, year on year, especially in Queensland whereas the NRL can't even break into any other states like teams have failed in WA. This means the AFL won't be playing survival as they have already consolidated in Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and the NT and as they are gaining a foothold in Queensland and New South Wales, the NRL will be on the back foot, not being able to expand into the AFL markets as they will be too busy trying to fight off the AFL in their strongholds.

Then there is also the investment in the womens game. Cricket Australia is the best example of investing in the womens game paying dividends. I believe the National Contract is just shy of 200k for the girls and with strong marketing and the increased growth of the WBBL, interest is at an all time high and with more girls in cricket, that makes it more popular as a whole as cricket is a sport throughout history that has struggled with the womens demographic. Footy is behind on the wages front but the fact they are now into their 5th season of a semi professional national comp with games now having paid tickets with teams selling out means Footy wont be falling behind with womens fans. Compare this to NRL once again where there complete lack of attention for the womens game with still only having 4 teams. The minimum wage is only 8k for an NRLW player whereas AFLW is double that and cricket being well ahead of both. This means that females in established Rugby Leagues areas of NSW and QLd will be more likely to have an interest in footy and cricket at a young age, once again, leaving Rugby behind.

I'm not saying the NRL will die, far from it but as sports like Basketball, Footy & Cricket continue to grow. There is a chance that Rugby League becomes a B Tier sport like Soccer and Basketball are currently which are still quite popular but far from the juggernaughts that are Cricket and Footy. The NRL have been reactionary with both growing the game across the states and the womens game and in 20-30 years, you will start to see the effects.

A bold tactic which V'Landys could consider is to add an NRL team into Tasmania. With AFLs constant neglect and taking advantage of the state, V'Landys could make a play for the region to become a Cricket/Rugby state but the financial costs may not be worthwhile.

the AFL doesn't need international anything to thrive. It's everyday competition is the pinnacle in this country by the length of the Flemington straight. These League international matches that you speak of, draw crowds of 30,000. The AFL draws 70 - 80,000 to it's matches a dozen+ times a year EVERY year and the average crowd across the whole competition is 35 - 36,000. Matches are sold out regularly in Adelaide and Perth, where there are waiting lists for season tickets in 50 - 60,000 seat stadiums, not 25,000 capacity suburban parks with Mavis and Beryl doing a sausage sizzle up on the hill. Just imagine the catering, food and beverage and corporate contracts stadiums like Optus in Perth and Adelaide Oval enjoy. In Melbourne well no need to even go on about the MCG and Marvel Stadium. The Brisbane Lions will be playing to sell out crowds this year in Brisbane and even the Swans will be drawing more bums on seats in Sydney than most of their opposition clubs from other codes. So long as the AFL keeps investing massively in grass roots footy aa well as the women's game nobody will even see their dust

The fact people cannot just walk up to Perth Stadium to see a game of fumbleball could work in RL's favour. Bring in the West Coast Pirates and market them to the people who are on the waiting list for the AwFuL clubs.

Vlandys has been selling NRL tv rights internationally MM....

And ??? The AFL's revenue (of which media rights is a significant part) is 3 times as much as the NRL's. So PVL is either selling the rights internationally for nicks or those international audiences are tiny. Makes sense when you look at Tonga, Nauru, NZ, Cook Islands etc etc. The UK ?? What do you think people are watching in the UK ? The English Premier League or the NRL in Australia ? The FA 3rd division would have more eyeballs watching it in the UK. Geez.

Watching AFL at the ground live is a way better spectacle than it is watching it on TV. TV doesn’t do the speed of the game justice

Rugby League television coverage shows you so much than more than You can see live at the ground.

So V Landys and the NRL should be smashing AFL out of the park in his tv deals. But that isn't happening.

It’s not the AFL’s fault that league fans in this country aren’t passionate enough to go to games, buy Club memberships and actually support their code.

AFL memberships are almost 100,000 for each of the top teams.

The NRL only have themselves to blame that the Clubs are bankrupt without memberships or people attending games, PVL had his hand out begging and lucky for them their season went ahead.

Looks like the cult of fumbles had sent another over here to preach ..
Lol quoting Wiki as a source .
3 times as much revenue
Lol lol lol
You brainwashed fumblers believe anything .
A quick search shows that in 2019. Won't count last year as it was badly affected by Covid
That the AFL revenue was approx 793 mill
The NRl was approx 528 mill

Was grade 2 the five hardest years of your life ?

Fumbleball's biggest advantage is not having to compete with a corrupt rival code that's aligned with the upper class. RL is competing against RU for players, fans and commerical support. RU uses its ties with the establishment to stifle RL's growth.

AwFuL has the peasants and richies from Melbourne on their side because their game wasn't created out of protest by a disgruntled working class that were fed up of being treated like shit by toffs.

Yes, most people around the world don't know the difference between Rugby League and Rugby Union. They think it is the same game. That's the problem selling our game internationally - differential of product. But you only have to watch 10 minutes of either game to know that the difference is that in one of them it takes 5 minutes to set a scrum and the other has no scrums.
'
Also Rugby League is wrongly thought of as the working man game just because some of our star players are just out of lock up or drug addicts or like to pee in their own mouths.

AFL is thought of as being some sort of game that has a Devine right to rule the country.

That Gil McLaughlin who is the AFL CEO looks like the biggest tosser who ever lived. He is a sheep farmer from SA and a pounce from a family of pounces.

V Landys at least looks like a knock about bloke like "Tony" Montana from Scarface.

ever considered he might have been talking about total revenue in the sport ie central revenue and club revenue? Whilst some nrl clubs are hard pressed to raise $13million from their football club activities you’ve got the likes of west coast earning $100million and all but 3 clubs having revenue over $45million. Consolidated revenue for afl (that’s clubs and central) was $1.5billion in 2019. Can’t find any comparative figures for nrl.

It's impressive how much the Eagles rake in. I know they didn't have any competition from RL until 95 and it lasted just 3 years, and havr only been up against the Force from the mid-00s, but damn that's a good number. It's a true community club that brings the city together. Western Australians don't get much attention from the east coast, and the Eagles have tapped it that by being their representatives.

I think the Pirates could easily put the Force under, or at least draw a bigger audience over a successful decade of on field performances. Our season is longer than theirs and we're the bigger sport, so the Pirates can be everyone's second team.

Cactus by name, cactus by nature. Your contribution Cactus is minimal and just to "sound off" on other people with ideas and thoughts. This is a debate about the future of our great game Rugby League and putting the4 National into NRL but unfortunately, Cactus you are part of this terrible Cancel Culture that we have in Western society. Rather than adding to the debate and listening, you throw out condescending gibberish.

Perth Red is so right, he is very insightful and I read his stuff with some hope for the future, if we can get more people like him involved in our great game of Rugby League. And Get rid of Donkeys is also on the mark as well with his comments.

It’s a very sad indictment on the Sydney suburban NRL clubs that they have to rely on the $13 million grant from the NRL to cover the salary cap and ancillary costs involved in running an NRL club. The Sydney clubs are plagued by poor crowds and yet some clubs are still getting very good sponsorship and some clubs that have highly profitable leagues still struggle to make ends meet. Let’s face it the landscape will change completely when the clubs that are highly reliant on poker machine revenue not only for NRL clubs but all rugby league clubs throughout this nation . Some will survive, some will not. You only have to look at Balmain and Newtown to say it won’t.

Studying the organisation chart of the NRL front office administration under V Landys and understanding what talents we do have and where there are gaps would be a good start. I think the whole thing needs reorganising. We need to recognise the people with footy skills and put them in positions where they can sort out footy things. Business leaders need to be put in places leading the strategic development of the game and pushing that forward. There needs to be more Project Appollo teams set up to address the issues I have listed. We have the worlds best kep’t secret in Rugby League and the time to reveal that secret is now.

There is a very big difference between setting a strategy and executing it as Vlandy’s has just done and administration which you are now trying to paint him into. I will agree that Vlandy’s is not the administrator type but that is why Abdo is there to do those running the game type things however there is a ton of neglected strategic stuff that has been hanging around sometimes for years that Vlandy’s could (and I hope will) get his head around.

1. Finalise the tv contracts
2. Develop the NRL’s digital app
3. How do we market this game better (particularly with the ball and chain that is Ch9)
4. How do we expand our reach (Australia, Globally)
5. How do we restructure our finances and make clubs stronger ?
6. How do we expand our game (teams, womens juniors)
7. What about Origin Scheduling ?
8. FTA tv rights 2022 and beyond
9. How do we grow our income ?
10. What about the international game ?
11. How do we make the state leagues stronger?
12. How do we fund and upgrade suburban grounds?
13. How do we increase junior participation?

When he started as Chairman, he did mention bucket list items like suburban grounds and country footy, but I don’t think he anticipated that he was trying to save the game from a global pandemic.
And with point 9, “How do we grow our income?”, the game has to stop relying on broadcast revenue. It’s got to find other major income streams.

We are so far behind it isn’t funny and while a lot of good things have happened we desperately need someone to lead this game and realise its full potential. That could be a man like Peter Vlandys

it helps that they’ve always been run by some of the smartest business people in WA, rather than a local sports league club mob. That’s why I think jets are best shot, they’ll have smart business people behind them not just a LC.

no doubt league can overtake union here, even with twiggys billions behind them. League is Amore popular sport with much greater media exposure,

Yep! If we rely on the broadcasters then we cannot complain when they pull the strings. We need to start getting casual fans to become club members. Reach out to the younger generation and reign them in as non-ticketed members. If there isn't a deal with Tonka Toys to sell their toy trucks in NRL club colours then make one. We need to get kids interested in our game as soon as they are ready to watch TV.
