Business as usual. Burton is staying. Nothing from the Dogs the past few weeks.
I am sure they will come knocking again later on in the season.

If they lose a few games and get desperate we might be able to really stitch them up with our demands.

Also handy if we cop a significant injury (eg Koroisau), we could potentially grab quite a decent replacement.

The problem is any trade isn't roughly equal like we did with the Tigers. Their players just flat out aren't good enough or too valuable to give away. There's no player like Momo chilling out of the 17 for the Bulldogs who wouldn't get a look in soon. All the players like that like say Jackson Topine are young guns they want to keep.

Although I'm not against a rocks and diamonds player like Napa he's not the type of player Ivan Cleary likes. Cleary likes more stability in his forwards.

A good piece by Paul Kent.

SHORT SHOT ...

As the NRL season nears its kick-off, Matt Burton is no closer to landing at Belmore than his November 1 arrival date.

Nor should he be.

Penrith coach Ivan Cleary has refused to release Burton, even though the Dogs have dabbled here and there.

The Bulldogs argue that Burton has been pencilled in as the club’s third or fourth-choice playmaker and fifth or sixth-choice centre – should it come to that – and that his development will be stunted if he is not released to Canterbury immediately.

But that is exactly why Penrith will not release him.

A few injuries and suddenly Burton will be very needed at a club which is a serious chance at winning the premiership.

Only a fat dose of compensation will prompt Penrith’s interest. Until then Burton stays at Penrith, even as some around him continue to plead his career is being stalled by the Panthers’ refusal to release him.

What happened to players sucking it up and committing themselves to training hard and playing well and ousting the bloke in front of them, based on their form?

Burton has that choice. He certainly has the talent to go past Jerome Luai if playing well.

The only difference is he wouldn’t be earning the money he would if he was released to immediately join the Bulldogs.

And suddenly, it all makes sense …

Exactly it's about money and improving the dogs roster. It isn't altruistic.

Stunting his development is such a bizarre argument. The best development club in the world, who developed the amazing talent in question, is stunting his development by not letting him go to noted shambles, the Bulldogs, the club that has developed a total of 3 NRL caliber halves (Anasta, Sherwin, Reynolds) in the past 2 decades since they let Thurston go.

There is no suggestion whatsoever that Burton isn't training hard and 100% committed to the Panthers in 2021. Luai had to wait for his chance and took it with both hands. Luai is an integral part of the Panthers. Burton as a backup for the halves has a value above what he is being paid, and more importantly what he costs under the cap. Hard to see how the Bulldogs could compensate us adequately without leaving a gaping hole in their team,.

Does the rule still exist where players who have signed elsewhere outside of their current terms can still accept an offer from their current club?

Reynolds was a Steelers junior who came to the Bulldogs at 17, but it took a few years before he was first grade ready. Anasta came to the club from the Rabbitohs system first grade ready, and Thurston came down from Queensland playing for nothing to get an oppotunity, and was in first grade the following year. They lucked upon Sherwin though, he came through their system and was highly instrumental in their last premiership win.
