Injuries and suspensions cause selection headache

St George Illawarra coach Anthony Griffin may be forced to turn to rookie backs Mat Feagai, Shaun Sauni-Esau and Tyrell Sloan after injuries to Zac Lomax and Cody Ramsey in Sunday’s 16-8 loss to Wests Tigers at WIN Stadium.

With wingers Mikaele Ravalawa and Jordan Pereira suspended, Max Feagai was called up for just his second NRL appearances against the Tigers and his twin Mat will come under consideration by Griffin as he runs low on backline options for next Sunday’s clash with Canterbury.

Lomax is expected to face about a month on the sidelines after being forced from the field midway through the first half with a thumb injury, while Ramsey suffered a rib injury late in the match.

Centre Brayden Williame is unavailable due to a calf injury, leaving and Mat Feagai, Sauni-Esau and Sloan, who played fullback for the Steelers team which lost 28-24 in Saturday’s SG Ball grand final against Canberra, as the only other specialist outside backs in the Dragons' NRL squad.

"You don’t want to be an outside back on our list at the moment," Griffin said. "We're going to have to go deep into our list and look at our options.

"Zac has dislocated his thumb. They're not sure if there was any other damage so they'll get him straight off for scans and to see the specialist in the morning. With Cody, it looks like a broken rib. Brayden Williame has a torn calf as well so we're obviously very light on there."

The Dragons led 6-0 early but after Lomax was injured making a tackle on his try line in the 19th minute, the Tigers directed their attack down the right edge where he would usually defend alongside Ravalawa.

Back-rower Billy Burns was forced to play centre, with Max Feagai outside him on the wing but Griffin shifted the right-edge pairing of Jack Bird and Ramsey to that side until the latter came from the field 13 minutes before full-time.

The Tigers had just taken a 16-8 lead after rookie winger Zac Cini crossed for his first NRL try in the 48th minute and centre Joey Leilua pushed off an attempted Bird tackle to score in the 65th minute.

"I thought we did a great job with the changes we made, losing Lomax and Ramsey," Griffin said.

"I think we had to defend 55 plays in our 20 [metre zone] and we had 10 up the other end.

"They got us on a scrum and the last play. And one from Leilua.

"I can't fault their effort, they keep turning up defensively. We coughed up too much ball and when we did get the ball we couldn't get out of our own end.

"You've got to give some credit to the Tigers. It was clearly the best game they've played all year."

OK, I'll take a punt on the round 9 team v Doggies

Only using players in our top 30.

1. Dufty
2. Max
3. Norman
4. Bird
5. Mathew
6. Clune
7. Hunt
8. Lawrie
9. Macca
10. Vaughan
11. Ford
12. Sims
13. Fui

14. Maguire
15. Alvaro
16. Kerr
17. Ellis

I'm putting Maguire back to the bench as I think he adds more value as the second rotation of lock with Fui. Ellis as the reserve prop if needed and Kerr can play edge or in the middle if necessary. I'm putting Norman to left centre this allows Clune to partner Hunt in the halves, which I think will add more running and better kicking game.

I'd like to see Sloan at fullback and Dufty #17, but I don't think Hook would go down that deep with the players he has available, and 1 debutant is enough.

Players out...Rava/Lomax/Periera/Ramsey/Williame.... Who gets a Run ?.
Without really analysing our squad I guess it will be both Feagai Bros, Bird and maybe Ford, Burns or Fuimaono at centre. A major surprise would be Amone maybe getting a run if they get approval. On a positive note by the end of this injury run we should have a better idea of our best backline and future makeup of the side. I reckon it will be 1.Dufty 2.Feagai 3.Bird 4.Burns 5.Feagai. It’s not how I’d go.

Norman at centre isn’t such a bad idea it’s working with Burton.

Looking at some of the teams and all I can think of is how screwed we are.

Still the corresponding game last year was the lowest ebb of the last decade so surely we can't go worse than that??

Well next week for the backs we have Lomax, Ramsey, Ravalawa, JP and Wiliame all unavailable. Throw in McInnes, JDB, Brittan, Merrin retiring and the cupboard is nearly bare. Changes need to be made no doubt but it’s just not possible. We’re running on fumes at the moment whether we like it or not

I'd be playing Fegai at centre not on the wing / much better centre than winger his brother on 1 wing

1 Dufty
2 Matt Fegai
3 Bird
4 Max Fegai
5 Shaun Sauni-Esau
6 Norman
7 Hunt

8 Lawrie
9 McCullough
10 Vaughan
11 Fuimono
12 Simms
13 McGuire

14 Kerr
15 Alvaro
16 Poasa
17 Amone

Kerr to reserves. Given enough time and can’t afford the mistakes and lack of impact. He’s got the potential but just not consistent enough at this level at the moment. I’d put Max Feagai to the centre and see what he can contribute there. If he goes ok it’s then easier to reposition Bird to different position when players come back from suspension and injury.

I understand why people are bringing up Ford or Burns to be in the centres this week but Burns was simply outpaced time and time again and the new rules at work in today’s game make it very difficult to use a forward in a backline. Mind you I’m pretty worried about Bird at the moment. He is running strongly, reads the game well, but he is missing tackles and was totally ineffective when he was played at 5/8. Any selections this week will be difficult and our pool is limited…..argh

Yep but no whingeing from the coach
As Sterling says yesterday about Hook what he liked
you will never get rant snd raved from press conferences, woe is us or throwing anyone under a bus
“nothing is as bad as it seems and nothing is as good as it looks” that’s the way Hook will show emotion to the media
On the flip side now is the time to have these short term injury issues and form slump, not mid late year
I’m just being positive as I saw positives amongst the clouds that everyone is emotional about and understandably so
i judged them on how they lose and I agree with hook there was still effort but no gas to attack and we were poor in that department and conceding errors pretty much all game which Hook did confess to.
We were lucky that the Tigers were like that also in the first 20 minutes or so which is when we should’ve taken them to the cleaners

As I said in my post, it’s not the way I’d go. In saying that with Kerr and Burns failures it’s time Ford got a run off the bench at the least.
