Wins like this only make me long even more for a couple of big stars to enter the club so that we can be there with the big boys.

Under no illusion about reality, and actually scared of the Storm but credit to the team for a decent game all in all.

That was diabolical, just as bad as last week. If they play like that next week and show the same lack of respect for the ball and field position they'll get smashed back to 1921. The Dragons boys don't need a coach they need a psychiatrist.

Congrats to Matt and Junior on their debut and their tries and congrats to Tyrell Fuimaono for having a go when those around him sucked.

Bold prediction - Manly will flog the Broncs, Storm will flog us resulting in Manly jumping us on the ladder ( yes we are +24 and Manly are -57 ). I wonder if that wnkr Joel Caine has odds for me on that.
I won't be surprised if the Storm decide to rest a few key players when teams are announced on Tuesday.

Bellamy is smart at knowing when to get some game time into the legs of those that will be needed when origin is around the corner.

Even at half strength they will be more than a match for us but that would also be true for most mid-table quality teams.

It will signal the first chink in his armor if he should decide rest any players - a throwback to the first semi against the Broncos in 2018 when Bennett believed he had the Dragons number and they were flogged .

Could we . . . , no unfortunately it this instance it is not possible ?

Doubt it for magic round to be honest. At least it’s at our homeground Suncorp Stadium.

I’d just like Benny Hunt to just spin it out of the ruck a bit quicker sometimes. Often runs and then if nothings on passes at the line ..a bit cramped..but he’s running into form. Liked how we hit them hard and often today.

Also liked the look of the young guys and always felt safe when the bombs went up. Great first half try by Saints; love the angles, more please! Just a pity Dufty doesn’t take more of these ‘half chances’ like in the first half when he was thru, but dropped it, as we could have shut them out earlier. Great games by Vaughan and Lawrie real goers. Still think Bird should be in the pack, tough and clever, but not quite quick enough out wide. Up the Dragons!

Don’t know if anyone else is still having trouble posting , but every game day I simply cannot get onto the forum let alone post . I need to wait until this time of night before I can successfully post and still it takes an eternity .

Traffic was the same this time last year , so I wonder what the problem is ?

Really glad they got the win but lots to improve still after today.
First half in particular had too many errors but second was much better and Hunt seemed to get better as the game went on apart from the intercept but liked how he was going for more.
Congrats to the guys on debut and great tries, well done.
Very tough next week they' ve just gotta turn up, go hard and see how it goes.

He should be playing a lock role similar to Victor Radley.

Why would they do that. Smith will already be suspended
Careful..you are almost saying Storm can afford to be complacent.
Dragons could pull their pance down

Great to get back into the winners circle, but we still have a lot of work to do in order to get into that 'elite group' of front running clubs in the coming years. Melbourne will punish us if we make the same errors next week if we are on the bad end of some of the stats like we were today... 73% completion rate ain't going to cut the mustard.

The Feagai twins have very bright futures, as does Junior Amone.

NRL fans unleash on ‘worst half of football’ this year
The Dragons managed to get the job done against the Bulldogs but fans weren’t happy with both sides’ sloppy performances early.

The Dragons and Bulldogs played out a dour first half of footy at Nestrata Jubilee Stadium on Sunday and NRL fans were not impressed.

The home side took a 6-0 lead into the sheds, courtesy of a try to fullback Matt Dufty.

Both sides struggled to make the most of their opportunities – the Doggies enjoyed the majority of possession but could not capitalise on their favourable field position.

For their part, the Dragons completed at a horrid 67%, looking a far cry from the side that defeated premiership hopefuls Parramatta just a month ago.

Both sides struggled to hold the footy in the first term, with the Dogs making six errors to the Dragons’ nine.

Pundits took to social media to vent their frustrations, with one fan going as far as to call the opening stanza “the worst half of football in 2021”.

Dragons horror hands and some generous refereeing keeping CB in this. Jeez we need a decent half. Bring back Shifty Sherwin #NRLDragonsBulldogs

Matt Dufty looks like scoring. 33 other blokes do not. #NRLDragonsBulldogs

Frustrated Canterbury coach Trent Barrett could give no guarantees about Kyle Flanagan’s immediate playing future after sensationally hooking the under-performing halfback at halftime in the Bulldogs’ embarrassing 32-12 defeat to St George Illawarra at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium on Sunday.

Fed-up with another ineffective performance from his young No. 7, Barrett replaced Flanagan with Lachlan Lewis in a bid to get his side going.

Flanagan was given a reprieve midway through the second half when he came back on to replace injured centre Corey Allan, who was stretchered off with a neck injury.

The young half now faces an uncertain future – in the short-term at least – as Barrett looks to get more out of a team anchored at the bottom of the table on the back of a 1-8 start to the season.

“Given where we are on the table we need to make some changes where we see fit (and) what’s in the best interests of the team moving forward,” Barrett said.

“Kyle’s not the only one. There’s 17 blokes in the team and we’ve all got different roles to play.

“He will have to (bounce back) – we all have to.

“If they’re not getting the job done then we’ll have to think about making some changes.

“We’re in a bit of a hole (and) we will sit down and address that during the week.”

Canterbury’s growing injury toll is likely to save Flanagan from the axe for the Magic Round clash with Canberra, but is clear Barrett is fast running out of patience.

The Dragons led 6-0 at halftime and cleared out in the second half for their first win in a month.

Flanagan is only nine games into a three-year deal at Belmore, but there must now be a big question mark over his immediate playing future.

He cut a forlorn figure on the bench as dad and premiership-winning coach Shane watched on helplessly from the stands.

Immortal Andrew Johns said: “One of the halves has to step up and take control.

“In the first half they were rudderless. Trent Barrett must be pulling his hair out.”

Parramatta’s best-ever halfback, Peter Sterling, said of Flanagan’s midgame axing: “It’s some kind of statement from the coach.”

Flanagan’s last-tackle options were again ordinary and he is a constant target in defence.

St George Illawarra cut loose in the second half, posting five tries against a Canterbury side that fell away alarmingly.

Rookie winger Mat Feagai, whose twin brother Max played on the other flank, scored a try on debut but was carried off late with a lower leg injury.

Junior Amone, promoted from the SG Ball team, also grabbed a four-pointer in his first top grade game.

NOT PRETTY BUT THEY WILL TAKE IT

Fittingly, it was Mother’s Day, because this was a mother of a game for the first hour.

The first half featured players dropping high balls after colliding with teammates, simple first-tackle turnovers, sloppy last-tackle options, wonky kicks and a ridiculous Josh McGuire Captain’s Challenge.

The Dragons wore replica jumpers to recognise St George’s 100-year anniversary and it seemed fans would have to wait another century to see a try, so poor was the execution from both teams.

But off the back of a Canterbury mistake – of course – Jack Bird and Matt Dufty combined to remind us this was an NRL game we were watching after 22 tortuous minutes.

Bird cut back towards the posts and found the ever-present Dufty with an inside ball and a clear passage to the line.

Dufty loves scoring a try at this joint, touching down for his 10th in nine games at the venue.

The game then resumed normal transmission and the mistakes again began flowing from both sides.

Referee Ben Cummins will put lodge a claim for RSI on Monday morning, so often did he have to signal for a knock-on.

The Dragons can offer up the excuse they were missing a number of players.

And to be fair, their second half was much better on the back of fewer mistakes and greater intent.

Dufty, Bird, Ben Hunt and Corey Norman really stepped up to severely embarrass the Dogs.

“I’m happy with the result but it was a scratchy performance,” Dragons coach Anthony Griffin said.

“We did what we needed to do.”

IT’S ENOUGH TO MAKE YOU CRY

Two weeks ago Trent Barrett broke down in tears as his Canterbury side finally won a game.

He could have been forgiven for breaking down again on Sunday, this time in utter frustration.

The Dogs spent plenty of time in the Dragons’ 20m zone in the first half but preferred to pay rent rather than make a purchase, continually turning the ball over through errors or poor last tackle kicks.

They fell away badly in the second half to leave their record standing at 1-8 after nine rounds.

Saw the last 25 minutes.

Fegai bothers and Amone did very well.

Granted, the Bulldogs will get the spoon this season barring a footballing miracle.

They are probably 6-12 months away from starting.

All three have size, speed and strength.

Cannot see Williame playing first grade again.

Was particularly impressed by Matthew Fegai.

Good under the high ball.

The Molong marvel is lucky Matthew was injured today. He may well have retained the left wing spot against the Storm.

I won't be surprised if the Storm decide to rest a few key players when teams are announced on Tuesday.

Bellamy is smart at knowing when to get some game time into the legs of those that will be needed when origin is around the corner.

Even at half strength they will be more than a match for us but that would also be true

Dragons hope scrappy win reignites season
  • National Sport News
    r0_0_800_600_w1200_h678_fmax.jpg

Junior Amone (l) was one of two debutant tryscorers for St George Illawarra against Canterbury.
It was an ugly win but St George Illawarra coach Anthony Griffin is hoping Sunday's 32-12 thrashing of Canterbury will reignite his team's NRL season.

The Dragons have been languishing over the past month since their stunning win over Parramatta in round five, losing their next three games before Sunday night.

With a clash with Melbourne looming in Brisbane next weekend, Griffin wants the Dragons to show themselves that they can compete with the top sides in the competition.

"They (Melbourne) are the form team of the competition at the moment, the way they took apart South Sydney the other night," Griffin said.

"It'll be a good test for us.

"It's a test we need to take us to another level, you've got to be able to compete at that level.

"We've only been going nine weeks but we've been able to compete hard with the top four sides... the Roosters for a half and we beat Parramatta.

"What that looks like next week, we have a whole week to prepare for, we're just happy we got through tonight without any major issues."

Tryscorer Mathew Feagai is the only casualty from Sunday's victory, with the debutant winger suffering a rolled ankle that could see him miss Magic Round against the Storm.

Backline players Zac Lomax, Cody Ramsay, Brayden Wiliame and Jayden Sullivan are already in the casualty ward.

However, Mikaele Ravalawa is due to return from suspension for the clash.

The Dragons showed defensive resilience in the first half against the Bulldogs but put the icing on the win late in the second half when Will Hopoate was sin-binned for a professional foul.

Feagai and fellow debutant Junior Amone both scored as well as Corey Norman and Paul Vaughan, while fullback Matt Dufty claimed a double.

After three weeks of losses, the boost of positivity could revive what was a promising start to the year.

"It was a big night for our club," Griffin said.

"We've got a lot down injured at the moment so to bring two 19-year-olds in who haven't played first grade before... it was good for them individually, but for the team and our club to debut players and see them play like that is a good night."

I’m sure the molong marvel would slot nicely in at fullback to cover duftys shit attitude. Did anyone else realise in the first half bulldogs spread it wide and dufty was standing at the play the ball with his f**king hands on his knees struggling to breathe??? He’s meant to sweeping up the back not at the ruck 30 metres away!!!
