I dont do agree with you but Essendon are a great example of moving to a shared stadium and expanding your popularity well beyond your suburban branding. 95% of their fans don’t live in Essendon.
But yeh outer region clubs like Penrith would struggle to appeal to a bigger base if at say bankwest fulltime. Not to mention nrl is just not as popular in Sydney as afl is in melbourne so we are starting from a lower supporter base in reality. But maybe a hybrid model could work better in Sydney than the current scenarios that’s not really pulling the crowds we should.
Dave smiths model of using the bigger stadiums to host event games regularly, or maybe shared stadium between two clubs within closer geographical proximity like dragons and sharks or dogs and tigers?

Not really.
You forget that the AFL is 50 years older than the NRL and the majorly of club supporters were no longer living in the Essendon area decades before they moved to the MCG. Essendon is the club furthest from the CBD and it it only 10km away. There are no clubs in the outer suburbs of Melbourne. Supporters of clubs are distributed pretty evenly around the city and have been since the post WW2 urban sprawl. Totally different situation to Sydney.

Why would we even want to be like the AFL anyway. Does anyone seriously want 9 Sydney clubs playing out of 2 stadiums? How f**king boring would that be. Fans would hate it. I don't know how they do it down in Melbourne, there is no difference between any of the clubs except the colors they wear. They all represent absolutely nothing. A home and away season should be exactly that. HOME grounds.

Whilst the above has resulted in the doubling of crowds and grown AFL here, yes it does make it bloody boring and RL would be crazy to attempt to copy. RL needs to build on its strengths, not copy Melbourne. The AFL know this, which is why there are more AFL stadiums in Sydney than in Perth or Adelaide.
However, the big games should be played at venues that can take more than 20k. I am all for a match of the round permanent time slot (Friday 8pm) at Moore Park.

sounds great in theory but in reality clubs aren’t rich enough to sort out their own stadiums and the state give isn’t going to invest in 8 modern stadiums in Sydney. So effectively you are consigning half the Sydney clubs to poor crowds and ongoing viability issues. This weekends crowds were a classic example of the way the league will develop i to haves and have nots. Even panthers were limited to cramming in 16k at a time they have a once in generation successful team to get behind, the other suburban grounds got pathetic crowds whilst sydneys only decent stadium got 25k.

Are there any other tenants for the stadium? Unless the club are paying for the upgrade it's going to be very hard for a government to justify anything more than a refurb of the existing facilities, assuming the stadium continues to host just 11 first grade games a year (possibly 12 with a final).

None of these stadiums are making money. They’re for social benefit. An area that can be the hottest place on earth should have a stadium that covers more than a quarter of the fans. Particularly when the Libs are fine with us having the worst performing hospital in the country. Prevention and cure and all that.

what is the justification for Penrith getting a couple hundred million spent on a stadium? I don't understand the case. Western Sydney already had a $300m stadium built a couple years ago and the ground at Penrith is adequate. There are enough boutique stadiums in Sydney. We should be trying to get Newcastle further upgraded. Enough of spending in Sydney.

You sure don’t know Penrith! It is more regional than it is part of Sydney.
Newcastle has had millions spent on their ground to get it to where it is. Why should they get more!
The government should be spending money where the people are. Penrith has been neglected by governments for decades. Penrith people pay taxes just like those in Sydney, Newcastle or wherever you call home! They deserve an upgrade before more money is wasted in Newcastle!

McDonald Jones is only $70m away from being a 35k world class venue. That is where money should be spent for the womens soccer world cup. The people of Penrith can get into Parramatta, Homebush or the city very easily for international sports like the womens soccer world cup. It is better for NSW tourism if there are 2 cities with world class rectangular venues.
