Origin in Townsville - Game 3 in NSW a "Financial disaster"

Is it really either any more? The last 2/1 split was in 2017 and it will be 2024 before it’s a possibility again. For the record 2017 was a Queensland 2 game year, so is it odd years Queensland or should NSW get it because QLD had the last 2 home game series?

This should be the 4th straight year of the neutral venue with 2022, 2023 & 2025 confirmed for Perth, Adelaide & Melbourne. Don’t be surprised to see 2024 go to Auckland judging by that schedule. I’d say it’s here to stay and probably for good reason as well. One team getting a 2-1 home ground advantage every year should be left in the past, not to mention the $ the neutral venue makes the NRL.

In saying that I wouldn’t mind Townsville getting it this year due to the circumstances then Newcastle getting one in 2024 as a one-off to square it up.
So from 2017, if it was a normal series, it should be 2 matches in Qld for this 2021 series?

Yeh I’d like to see them go that way because it will never happen under normal circumstances. Repay the favour in 2024 in Newcastle then go back to the neutral games starting 2025 in Melbourne.
It should go like this.

2021

GAME 1
Brisbane
GAME 2
Sydney
GAME 3
Townsville

2022

GAME 1
Sydney
GAME 2
Brisbane
GAME 3
Newcastle

Keep it under that structure.

Melbourne has an NRL team. It doesn't need Origin and doesn't deserve it. VIC GOV have it for the money it brings in and because they believe that hosting every major sporting event will fool people into thinking Melbourne is the best.

Put teams in Adelaide and Perth so we can have a national competition and Origin can stay where it belongs.

2022 is locked for Perth.

Neutral venue for the 3rd game should absolutely stay, nothing to do with ‘deserving it’. Having a 2-1 home advantage every year makes every series unfair to one side. It should be Townsville & Newcastle as one offs due to the circumstances then back to Melbourne/Perth/Adelaide/Auckland rotation.

As we've seen in recent days, there is no such thing as locked in these Covid times.

Put teams in Adelaide and Perth so we can have a national competition and Origin can stay where it belongs.

These locations are considered non-viable for NRL franchises. The numbers have been crunched many times over. Of course the AFL put teams in non-viable locations, but they were swimming in money at the time.

Surely Perth can work. There's a great bid from Perth worth at least $30m. Having a team there would be a real boost for the game.

Darren Lockyer has floated the idea of holding the state of origin at smaller venues if its a great success. The idea of having it at Canberra or Newcastle in the future.

I have a one word response to that: No

You want the event held at the biggest stadiums so the most fans can go and see the event. And if rugby league is serious on expansion and growing the game it has to continue to bring state of origin football to Perth, Adelaide, and Melbourne.

If Canberra or Newcastle fans really wanted to see state of origin football they could take the bus to Sydney which will take a couple of hours. Townsville fans really don't have the same convivence travelling to Brisbane by car takes 15 hours.

Yeah they invented planes so people can fly to capital cities. Keep it home, away and neutral whenever possible.
