Looking at their squad, they could put 2 teams on the park that would be competitive with the top teams

1. Hynes
2. Ieramia
3. Brenko Lee
4. Olam
5. Addo-Carr
6. Munster
7. Cooper Johns
8. Jesse Bromwich
9. Brandon Smith
10. Christian Welsh
11. Kenny Bromwich
12. Chris Lewis
13. Max King

1. Papenhuysen
2. Jennings
3. Reimis Smith
4. Eisenhuth
5. Lumelume
6. Ryley Jacks
7. Jerome Hughes
8. Nelson
9. Harry Grant
10. Kamikamica
11. Tepai Moreoa
12. Kaufusi
13. Finucane

Not enough players in the squad for reserves, but you get the idea.

I'm sure the other top 4 teams could say the same. It's what makes them the top 4. What sets Melbourne apart is that no matter who they put in, they slot into the structures with ease and do their job. They're deadset machines.

Anyway, as an exercise for Souths:

Last weeks starting 13:

1. Blake Taaffe
2. Alex Johnston
3. Dane Gagai
4. Campbell Graham
5. Taane Milne
6. Cody Walker
7. Adam Reynolds
8. Mark Nicholls
9. Damien Cook
10. Tom Burgess
11. Keaon Koloamatangi
12. Jaydn Su'A
13. Cameron Murray

Another 13:

1. Latrell Mitchell
2. Josh Mansour
3. Braidon Burns
4. Jed Cartwright
5. Jaxson Paulo
6. Benji Marshall
7. Dean Hawkins
8. Tevita Tatola
9. Peter Mamouzelous
10. Hame Sele
11. Jacob Host
12. Jai Arrow
13. Liam Knight

Every one of those 26 players have played NRL this season. And I couldn't fit in Patrick Mago.

I agree in principle, but realistically that second team wouldnt beat the dogs. Souths, Penrith and even the Roosters have shown they cant win without just a couple of their top players, the Storm seem to have a system where they have mutiple players for every position that can do an adequate job. Trust me, as a Tigers supporter who's team cant even field one competitive team this is very frustrating.

There was a thread about Souths on this same subject earlier this year.

They have a forimidable list and I agreed. And thus very surprised they tanked in a few games by 50+ with such depth.

The Storm are just awesome at what they do.

Do they identify the right players where others don’t?

Do attract quality players to the club for less because of their brand and success?

Do they create quality players (from just “good ones”) out of the systems they have?

I think it’s a combination of all of the above..

For example, If you’re a junior player… and have these clubs looking to sign you… where do you go?

Storm
Tigers
Dragons
Manly

If the Storm are paying the least, and even if by a long way, surely they’d still be a club youd want to join. Coz you know they’d be somewhere where you’d be the best you could possibly be. Realise your potential.

This Year?

Melbourne certainly are experts in dealing in duplicates.

I think its time they get a reserve grade side playing in the Nsw Cup or Qld cup as the Melbourne storm, not sending the remaining lower part of their 30 to the east tigers, sunshine coast falcons or whoever else theyve got feeding them, that way these guys can play along side other Victorian juniors, and verse the other nrl junior clubs, it will only strengthen them as well as the comp, they aren't testing against other reserve grade clubs, newtown, wenty, souths juniors, canberra etc, it will only better the lower grades in Victoria, at the moment they have the Thunderbolts in jersey flegg, who have only won one game all season, and a draw... getting these guys mixing with the bottom 20-30 players of the storm, would easily improve their squads depth even further.... maybe thats the plan in a few years

It's as if 2010 never happened, and who is really surprised by that. Melbourne will always be the NRL's darlings because they can't stand the thought of facing the humiliation of the Storm being bottom dwellers in THE AFL city.
More people in Brisbane are starting to follow Brisbane Lions cos the broncos and titans are embarrassing basket cases.

It would be nice if the NRL/ARLC were just as committed to Adelaide, Perth, NZ 2 and Brisbane 2 as they have been towards the Storm.

Brisbane 1 isn't right why would they bring in Brisbane 2
Because Brisbane is the world's second largest RL city. Having just one team in it since 1998 has given AwFuL a massive advantage in developing their game and held RL back.

Melbourne is treading water with a team that never loses and attracts smaller crowds than the Broncos, who are at the bottom off the ladder. I think that says it all.
