I’d take that as reasoning now but rugby league became popular enough to be a professional sport so surely in the 80s there’d have been enough participation to at least make it a larger sport today. Just a bit strange.
costs more? .... you need a stick each - ball, shin pads, goaly needs a bit of gear if you wanna play properly ..... you can play footy in the park with 30 other kids and only one of them needs a ball (until that little soft cock gets the shits and takes his ball home)

I have no problem with golf in the Olympics.
I enjoyed it as well. I love watching golf.
I like watch golf too, once a year, the US Masters the pinnacle of that sport.

For mine if the Olympic Gold medal is not the pinnacle of the sport it should not be there.

No golf, tennis, soccer, basketball, probably more.

Gold medals mean nothing to them.
