When Nine last signed a broadcast deal with the NRL in 2015, former chief executive David Gyngell secured rights for all matches in a move that infuriated News Corp and ultimately sealed the departure of former NRL boss Dave Smith.

Foxtel then had to buy five games a week from Nine to show on its dedicated rugby league channel on Foxtel. The deal with Foxtel reduced the cost of Nine’s free-to-air deal to $115 million a season over five years and about $10 million a season in ‘contra’, or free advertising.

In discussion with the clubs last week, V’landys said the deal wasn’t just about money and the successful station would need to help promote the game, assist in increasing participation and forge a robust partnership.

“The price is the only thing that is outstanding at the moment — but that is progressing very well,” said one NRL club CEO. “But this is more than money. It’s about promoting the game, participation, being a partnership as well as price.

“The game wants a partner — not somebody that is going to go and do their own thing. The NRL also wants their partner to assist them in promoting the game and help increase participation.

“They are the four Ps – partnership, promotion, participation and price. That is what Peter V’landys told us at the club’s meeting.”

All of this sounds great but its all words. Get it in a binding contract because who the f**k would trust Nein based on the last 20yrs.

I dont understand them saying $115m a year is a record deal? Last tv deal nine paid nrl $925mill for 5 years which is $185mill a year! sure they recouped a good chunk back ($55mill a year) by onselling saturday nights and simucast rights but the fact remains Ch9 paid nrl $185mill a year. If we are about to agree to $115mill a year I bloody well hope that missing $70mill a year is being paid to nrl by fox!
can nrl directy sell simucast rights of the fta providers content?
so even after taking into account ch9’s on sell they still agreed $130mill a year inc contra last deal, I hope the $115mill they are mentioning in the article doesn’t include contra!

if Ch9 are only paying $600mill then that’s fox paying $1.2bill PLUS another $75-100mill just agreed extra for expansion!

the last deal had Ch9 paying $925mill and fox paying nrl $875mill.
Fox then Paid Ch9 $175mill for Saturday night game and a further $100mill for simucast. So a total spend to nrl and Ch9 of $1.15bill.

So what about the naming rights, articles used to say $100mill for digital and naming rights.

Ch 9 could not afford to loose the rights I really hope the NRL milked them for every cent. Was hoping for a miracle with Ten or 7 coming in with an 11th hour bid to top 9. It would have been exciting now seems more of the same.

If its Ch9 as likely will be they need some new people. Being abroad so watchnrl is fox coverage except for Origins & GF, listening to Gus as talented as football manager he is was not good. Being that negative on a GF with people who would not watch a lot of league (AFL states) listening was horrible. Hope its not more of the same and they totally refresh their coverage.

Numbers in the deal seem all smoke and mirrors at the moment. Herald will down play the figure while News corp will likely inflate it, so somewhere in between.

Too early to tell if this will end up a good deal or a great deal, it’s certainly not going to bad by any reports. If they get 2Billion it’s huge win, last time they got about 1.9B. Extra 100mil in the kitty plus a 2nd Brisbane side Win Win.

It’s all just media guess work given the nrl refuses to confirm or deny anything.

Ch9 between $105-120mill a year
theres been no commentary on what the fox deal is worth other than fox to pay an extra $15-20mill a year for expansion of one team
sky to pay $164mill up from $100mill over 5 years

This claims that Ch7 were willing to pay $30mill a year just for SOO. If SOO is worth that sort of money then it makes the Ch9's alleged price of $75-90mill a year for 3 games a week seem pretty cheap. $25-30mill a game a week compared to ch7 paying AFL $36.5mill a game a week in their new deal.
