In the 80s my first business was pirating Commodore 64 software on cassette using a dubbing deck, and selling it to other kids. I got my friend's sister to make 'covers' for each cassette. Was going quite for a few months until I got caught.

I ran a similar business in the 90s. But it involved VHS and teenagers

I was at my mums a couple weeks ago and found my old commadore 64 with cassette deck .... oh the joy of spending 30 minutes loading a game only for it to fail and have to start again

Yep. I started on a TRS-80, which was even slower, and less reliable. I thought I was the king of the world when I bought a floppy drive for the C64. I sold it at some point before I went to Uni.

But then I bought another one from some bloke in Villawood (the suburb, not the concentration camp) that came with about 100 'free' disks in an empty ice cream bucket. But most of them turned out to be games that basically involved you alternating the joystick (yeh the actual joystick) to make some cartoon character flog himself off. I cannot imagine who or what the bloke who sold it to me was up to.

Anyone used Foxtel Now? For $1.50 more than Kayo you get the sport and a whole bunch of other channels. And for another $10 you get the movie channels. Can't remember if they're any good.
I have normal foxtel. Which has Foxtel Go. Is that same as Now?

The movies they have arent that geeat now. Not terrible, but foxtel dont get the ones other streaming services keep for themselves now.

Now is the same content/packs but it's all streaming. Although apparently you do get a remote. Not sure about the IQ stuff or other features though.
I did think maybe the movies wouldn't be so great now but for an extra $10 possibly worth it.

Budget is pretty much what I can convince myself it is. The Cambridge EVOs are networks streamers integrated with a pretty decent 2.1 stereo amp (either 75watts per channel or 150w per channel). So just add speakers. But you are always paying a bit for their marketing budget.

what I think i might do is f**k around with a cheap (highish spec / low features) DAC such as the Topping D10s and see if I can place it somewhere between my streamer and the AVR that will allow me use the audio from the DAC and the video output from HDMI. I figure that I can send both signals via HDMI to my TV, then connect the video via HDMI to the AVR, and run the audio via optical to the DAC, and then to the AVR via analogue RCA. The D10s can be had for $160. If that doesn't suit me I can always use it to hook up my desktop PC (Alienware R11) to the amp.

Or maybe I could just start listening to music through headphones again (in which case I'd definitely be in for the Dragonfly stuff)....but I tend to listen to audiobooks rather than music when walking. And when at home I sit in the lounge room and play music from the TV room (using it as an additional amplifier). The neighbours love it. Particularly the sub.
Another option you could go is a pair of quality active speakers that have their own dac and amps so all you need to do is add a source/streamer. I went down this path and am
stoked. My smaller standmounts push out 300watts per speaker (150w per driver), have a high quality DAC and fed a good signal, sound incredible. You can pick them up half price at some stores at the moment as they finishing that line. If you’re keen for floorstanders they also have those as well. The KEF LS50 W ii’s are another excellent option and they are about to release a floor standing option.

I got a letter a few weeks ago that they are getting rid of Foxtel cable and i need to switch to new IQ5 which is streaming. Get a box with a remote. Dont know whether to think its a good or bad thing.

Hmmm. What standmounts do you use? and what do you feed them?

I was looking at KEF R3s or R7s (not active) if I decided to get one of the Cambridge amps

Yeah I dunno either. Be interesting to see if it gets cheaper. Also with Now there's no contract.

I’ve got Dynaudio Focus 20XDs. They’re insane for their size. I’ve also got quite a big sub (overkill) as well but depending on what you listen to, it’s probably not needed. Otherwise you could go for the larger 30XD or 60XD. I’m using a PI2AES as my streamer with a decent linear power supply and it’s a cracking little black box. I don’t think I’ll bother upgrading that until I can afford an Auralic Aries G1 (or 2.1 if I win lotto) as it’s that good.

if you’re ever up this way you’re more than welcome to have a proper listen.
