We went from the spoon to finalists in a year recently. No reason for Mahoney to think the Bulldogs couldn't make a similar improvement.
Given the years either side of the spoon, that year was the outlier. We won 35 games between 2016 and 2018. Canterbury had only won 12 games in the three years prior to this year. We won half that in 2018 alone. There is no comparison.

You think Reed did that analysis? You've consistently praised Gus over the years but hardly mentioned him as a factor in this case. He has a high standing in the game. If a young player is sitting across the table from him and Gus is telling him how much they want him and what he could be a part of, what effect might that have if your current club has prioritised other players and are playing hardball? And it's your junior club with new management.
No one is claiming they didn't have to offer more but that the difference being claimed is unrealistic.

It's not just him doing the analysis, they pay agents to look at all this as well. These merkins know that the Origin chances (and payments) of blokes like Mahoney depend on their team winning games.
Well then he'd know he's always going to be behind Grant and Hunt for however long he's around. And there's probably someone else around the corner. Not really a factor.

I'm sure he believes in himself. And Grant has never played more than 15 games in a season. He's already missed three games this year. He's always a chance of missing Origin.

Believes in himself? So hope is a selling point? Anyway, there's Hunt too. The chance of both of them being unavailable and therefore being a significant factor in where you sign is pretty small.

Self belief isn’t something someone else sells to you. It’s not part of the equation here.

Possibly. But either way, the relative weakness of the Bulldogs as a club is something that would have been made abundantly clear to Mahoney, from everyone other than Gould and Barrett.

Marata only played 1st half, but looks like he's training with the team ?
