The biggest box for nz2 to click is the financial sustainability, and then somehow convince fox that another low drawing nz club is worth any money to them.

You have identified one of the big structural problems with the competition. The idea that every club gets the same grant is ridiculous. Regional clubs with large junior competitions /nurseries should have been getting bigger grants for a number of years.
There’s an easy solution and that’s to reward clubs who develop juniors with greater cap exemptions

and the grants shouldn’t be equal for all clubs
Regional clubs should get an extra 1 million pa in funding

melb and nz should be 2 mill

I agree financial sustainability is the key.

Guess the argument as far as NZ2 is concerned with TV money is Sky NZ covering the new team and fox paying for the 9th game.

That’s definitely one way. The notion that somebody like the Knights get the same amount of money as the Roosters or the Broncos (who are cashed up) seems a bit counterproductive in my opinion

Definitely agree. The biggest hurdle is corporate. A second NZ side should increase the player talent pool but in order to really make that so, both the new club and the Warriors need to be financially secure and stable in order for them to actually have the resources to spot and identify talent.

We don’t want two Kiwi sides on the bottom of the ladder

Warriors have made the 8 once in 11 years. How they stop the best 15/16 year olds being cherry picked and moved to Australian systems is a hard one, and why warriors haven’t been able to develop a decent side in a decade despite the jnr opportunity remains a mystery. Add in competition from another club in the country and it doesn’t look great Unless something significantly changes in nz.

It doesn’t have to be as extreme as the afl but an extra million to two million would go a long way for those clubs

What’s the radius of that 1mill? Time and again it shows that once you go past 40-50km fron the stadium chances of fans attending in meaningful numbers are virtually zero.
Probably half in half out. In the early days of the Hurricanes they used to get busloads of fans going down from Hawkes Bay (3 hours away).

But at any rate, within the 50km is a bigger population than Townsville and Newcastle and there's probably more league fans in Wellington than Melbourne so assuming the team is run properly they should be able to attract crowds.

Also, I'm not advocating for Wellington over any other place, was just giving some info.

Why - they dont have to compete for 3pas and have cheaper housing

I can only agree with travel costs

To make regional clubs as strong as city clubs

to help attract players

make the comp more even
The argument for regional clubs is their junior catchment, so attracting players should not be their objective. It should be development

They usually have bigger regions to look after. They struggle to attract players. Travel costs.

There are fair few reasons
Bigger regions are not looked after by the NRL but by the regional body

Take Newcastle as a example, they have the Hunter & Newcastle RL bodies and then they also have multiple LC s financing their junior operations

I understand NRL funds travel costs directly so that is already covered

If they do a junior salary cap allowance that will addresses the development v attracting player balance. As it favours regional clubs who shoukd always being developing players in their catchment

they don’t get all their players from juniors

and attracting players from cities is hard

mad is competing with big city clubs
