I haven't received an email from Optus yet... nothing since last Monday when they were encouraging me to chnage my plan even if I still with my )outright owned) phone.

I don't trust any of these companies, and I think it was some now ancient terrowist-nonsense reason behind why we have to give so much ID/personal info just to have a f**king mobile phone number.

On the data breach subject…
Just an FYI from potential weirdo/thief/scammer that potentially saw some of you posters personal details…
On 7 September the Parra Eels sent an email asking for supporters (ie anyone on their email list) to nominate our player of the year. They needed full name, email, DOB, gender, and phone number. All replies went into a draw to win tickets to the Panthers semi final.
I voted Jakob Arthur.
Anyway, upon submission there was a link to see the interim results of the poll. Following this link allowed me to see the details of everyone whom had voted up until that point in time. At that stage there was only 20 or so replies.
I immediately tried calling the membership dept at the club only for the call go unanswered and through to the answering machine 1986 style. I tried calling twice then went back to work and thought nothing of it until now.
Luckily they didn’t associate my name to the Jakob Arthur vote. That would have been embarrassing.
i still have the email. I just filled it out under a false name. The link to see the results is gone I’m assuming because the competition is over.
The email came from hello@e.parraeels.com.au. Replies to the email would be sent to support@parraeels.com.au.
I can forward the email to anyone that is interested.
Screw you Optus and Parra Eels marketing teams.

I got the same and a bill on Saturday. I'm not paying. I will ask for proof my I'd hasn't been stolen before I pay.

This is very serious.

We could be looking at issues many years down he road.

Suggestions are that it wasn't even a hack.

Slater & Gordon are investigating a class action against Optus.

Given that the API misuse is being blamed for the leaks, I would say Optus are in a world of trouble.

I reckon any Optus customers should register their interest in a class action with Slater & Gordon.

I’m an Optus business customer and it appears that we have been spared from the shemozzle. I was chatting to a client yesterday coincidentally who works for the Federal Police in cyber stuff. Whilst he works in dark web nasty shit, he did say that he was hearing stories of the some media blowing things out of proportion because of an alliance ($$) with Telstra. So I have no solution for you, other to say slow down and don’t take the most outrageous statements as fact.

BTW joining a class action does not place you in any financial risk, nor should it require you to personally contribute your time or worry to the case whatsoever.

I have no doubt that the media may have blown it out of proportion.

However, I've already had a credit block come back to me - some lowlife has already tried to use my details to open a credit card in my name.

I haven't received anything from optus. Injust have a mobile pre paid number. Was I prone?
I heard mobile number customers didn't get hacked

I dunno about prepaid ... i know someone who got an optus mail who used to be an optus mobile customer (on a plan) but isnt any more. So it seems it includes former optus mobile customers too.

The report is stating that 9.8 million users were affected - Optus currently only has 5.8 million active users.

Also, according to reports, it wasn't a hack - it was an API attack, which is so much worse.

In very, very basic layman's terms, Optus did not tighten security around their API, and do the bare minimum, leaving the door wide open for people to access millions of people's personal data.

Whether it was gross incompetence, or criminal indifference, the result is largely the same - innocent people can potentially have their lives ruined.

The three credit agencies in Australia (Experion, Equifax and Illion) allow you to see your reports, which shows all activity, including enquiries on your credit file. There are even third party websites that let you look at two (Experion and Equifax) on the one site. They also give you your individual credit score. You can even setup notifications if there is activity on your file.

I would suggest that everyone signs up to them, it will tell you within a few days after someone has tried to obtain any kind of credit in your name. Ironically my Optus account has always showed up on one of them, as a mobile phone plan is considered some sort of credit.
